I read that one shouldn't draw too small. but what is too small? Right now I'm going with A4 and A5 papers, mostly the former. I feel I'm able to get the details I want in, is it more about giving your hand freedom to move and draw from ones shoulder etc?

Idk about hand movements, drawing from the shoulder is a meme anyway, many great artists and masters never drew/painted like that lol. Anyhow larger pieces tend to look better because details are easier to see, compositing is also faster and looks better in my opinion. I usually use A5 to make thumbnails, research color on A4 and draw on A3 or A2. You should try it man it’s really fun, only downside is the time taken to draw on such large formats Ha :p

looking at more artwork is helping my see that my style of drawing isn't completely unique, which is a relief.

I used to think my art was "different" in a bad way, but now I'm starting to see the similarities between the way I draw, which I used to think was wrong, and the way other artists worked in the past, and how their work is accepted now by critics

Your hands need work also you should grind cylinders more to get abetter feel of foreshortening tube like limbs.
That left shin of hers is horribly deformed.
Another issue is her left forearm which shouldnt be visible from that angle because of her thigh covering it unless she is supposed to have orangutan arms.
The face is obviously your comfort zone as well as bobbers which are the most polished parts in this drawing, so good job on that!
You did a decent enough job at foreshortening her torso and right foot.

I suggest drawing more cylinders boxes and general foreshortening studies. Thumbnailing is also something you might wanna pick up for more complex poses as it lets you plan ahead on a smaller scale and you can experiment with hidden limbs more easily in how they are placed which could have prevented you from giving her that long arm.

It's all either an auction or a "Buy it Now" on eBay. Just make some fairly presentable with DISTINCT style and subject matter and you can easily sell stuff too.

by distinct I mean can be summed up in a popular category on ebay for paintings, and there are a lot of analytics tools within ebay that help you find the right words to use for each work!

By "words" in the title good examples are "Cloud" "Oil Painting" "Abstract" "Impressionist" "Nude Female" "Portrait" it's all very simple with naming conventions. Your art has to be of something for it to sell well. Like if you just make a very good figure painting of a nude woman and sell it as "Nude Female Original Oil Painting" you'll probably sell it if the price is reasonable for the quality. Give it a try!

Plaza kill me.
I draw like a child. I have these ideas in my head. I'm pretty good at visualizing stuff in my head, but I'm garbage at translating that into reality. I want to draw sci-fi-y stuff, I feel juvenile, like my subject matter of choice is immature, like I should draw women or landscapes, coupled with my lack of talent I just get frustrated and end up not drawing at all. I am ashamed at what I create. How do you learn to draw well from imagination? What should I do? I don't want to give up but I feel like I'm getting nowhere.

Yes, although all of these have dotwork, I normally draw with hatching, so no problem...
Be in mind that in adding color, the shading for the hatching will need to be more subdued (less hatching)
Pre wet the paper and use broad brushes with plenty of water so you dont leave streak marks. Use waterproof ink (sakura micron are a great choice)

If you think the wash needs more color let it dry (blowdrier will make this quicker) and go over it again...

I normally do the ink drawing first then do the washes over it. It will subdue the black and leave a more harmonious painting. Use colored pencils, poscas, gel pens and other media to mix it up

Do you actually sell these copies of famous artworks though? They aren't anything like the original, and people can get direct 1-2-1 copies in oil of anything from Eastern Europe for about 150 bucks/

>> No.5218544

>>5218541
I usually try to sell these in the range of $100-$125... also you vastly overestimate the quality of the repro market on eBay, most are incredibly shoddy.

Anyone doing 1 to 1 copies of famous artworks is selling them as forgeries, not as repro's, and they're probably making much more than $150 for them. That's not the market I'm in though, these are sold as "studies", basically original artworks by me of famous artworks in my personal style.

Combination of quality pencils and quality paper. I know aquarelle are pretty much the best but the range about $200 for a set. But their pretty much like pastels as far as opacity goes.

Most of the time, yes.

When you are trying to study something, you are trying to work on a certain portions of your technique to improve upon. For example, if you're studying color, you might take a painting and not reproduce it perfectly, but try to get down the colors in the general locations to get a good value study.

Although sometimes people will do a master study to replicate what the original artist has done but try to do so using the techniques that they have already learned or are trying to learn.

Here's some advice, especially for beginners: Keep things simple and focus on value and edge first, and then add colors later. Really focus on those at the beginning. Then studying other topics like perspective and anatomy will actually be way easier. Because you're training your eyes how to see.

completely new to trad stuff, decided to buy some gouache to learn to paint, got pic related in zorn colors
I got confused since I thought tempera was an entirely different medium, but the guy said tempera and gouache are words for the same thing in different languages, with the distinction of egg tempera
is that correct?
also, how good are these? I got the extra fine ones, not art creation

>> No.5232754

They aren't. Tempera you buy in tubes isn't egg tempera (you have to make that one yourself), I'm not sure what it is - I think it has some gum arabic in it. It behaves a bit differently, basically I'd say it's lower quality gauche but does the job. Your paintings will probably come out thick if you use it.

Gauche is basically watercolor with some white pigment and a binding agent making it opaque. The more water you add to it, the more transparent it is. If you want to move on later to oils I'd say it's will teach you a lot of the basics. Having said that, if you're not even thinking about moving into oils in the future (although there are non-toxic oils for example which make the whole thing easier), I think you'll get the best results with normal watercolors.

Whatever you use, you'll need watercolor paper (hot pressed = smooth, cold pressed = rough) to stop your stuff from disintegrating when you add too much water. It's not impossible to paint with water on a thick mixed arts paper, the surface will just peel off if you abuse it too much. It will also look abused, less clear.
