I finally stop procrastinating and decide today I'm going to draw. I watch a few videos on how to construct anatomy. I draw, looks janky, spend hours re trying and adjusting anatomy, give up, dont draw again for weeks, repeat. I have so much ambitions for drawing, but I hate it so much. I have an incredible urge to create, but then I try and do it, fail and waste my weekend. Why live?

Stop being a perfectionist. You are human. Simply by being a human, you cannot be perfect.

Instead of focusing on perfection, focus on the learning, the growth, and the journey, and strive to be the best version of yourself every day.

Sigh, I shouldn't be responding to you but I will.
Anon, anytime you learn something your brain releases ADRENALINE to stay alert. That adrenaline will make you FEEEEL uncomfortable. This is where will power and self discipline come in. You have to push through the discomfort every day until your brain has learned what you set out to learn. This is totally normal and okay, just don't make a big deal out of it and quit because this will happen with EVERYTHING you try to learn because this is just how the brain works.

You're expecting good results immediately. You are gonna have to finish dozens or more throwaways before you get better. If you are waiting to line and color shit and finish it until you 'get good' you will never learn.

Discomfort keeps you safe. Sitting in a tree all day eating fruit is not likely to give you much discomfort. Exploring the wild may or may not have rewards. It’s a dice roll of a risk:reward ratio. Your brain wants you to sit doing nothing all day as long as you’re safe and fed

Adrenaline makes you alert and in order to make new neural pathways the brain has to be in a state of alertness. Secondly, sleep is where the information gets stored into long term memory so that you don't have to go through this process constantly when you learn something. The brain is always trying to work in passive mode.
So get sleep and be okay with being uncomfortable. Study for 90 minutes at a time, the first 20-30 will be the most uncomfortable. You'll eventually get used to it. Breathing exercises help too. All of this is stuff I learned watching Andrew Huberman's neuroscience lectures because I was in the same position.

Thats what Ive been doing for almost 2 years, just sketching shit and then giving up even when the sketches look alright for my standards. I havent coloured/lined anything in almost a year.

Don't feel bad anon I feel the very same way, nothing works. I don't even know where to start or how to study. That feeling kept me away from art for roughly 3-4 years. Recently getting back into it and man I gotta say I regret ever giving it up. I could only imagine how much better I'd be right now if I told myself to keep going.

so don't give up and keep going,

practice on some Looney Tune cartoons first. You took the hardest step and that is starting, but you're only going to discourage yourself the way you're doing it. Just get good at copying simple stuff and training your eye. You'll get to enjoy drawing more and will be able to find obvious flaws, this will all transfer over when you go to learn more complicated subjects.
Remember how you were a kid, you'd do something just for the enjoyment?
I know being an adult sucks, you're constantly aware of our finite time and want to make the most of it. personally I panic about all the time I've wasted and find this only gets in my way, start small don't take it seriously, put on some music/podcasts, get a pack of 500 pages of blank copy paper and start filling out pages of (I recommend kids cartoons) stuff. By the end you'll be better than you were, without all the stress.

Let me tell you my short story, maybe it will motivate you.
9 years ago I decided that I want to start drawing and bought myself a cheap tablet. I got myself "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" book, and did my first drawing without knowing any basics (pic related).
Since then I've read a lot of things about construction, perspective, shading etc.
And I thought "Yeah, I understand how these things work, why do I need to practice them? Fuck this boring shit."
I did occasional drawing, felt frustrated, stopped for a while, rinse and repeat.
Eventually I just stopped.
Then 2 years ago I started learning to play the guitar. And this is when I fully understood that there is a huge gap between perceived skill and actual skill. You may know all the chords but you can't play a tune if you don't practice them. So I practiced, I played at least 30 minute a day, and over time I was able to play more and more complex melodies.
And now I'm here, back to square one. I try to draw simple things, and try to do it daily.
So my advice to you: either drop it now or start practicing daily. You won't get anywhere while procrastinating for weeks.
Just try to have fund and don't expect to draw masterpieces. Drawing looks like shit? So what, you don't have to show it anybody. Just take notes on what you have to improve and move on to the next one.
I hope you won't waste your time like me.

Don't try hard to get good, just draw constantly and recognize your errors. Of course your drawing is shit, but it is not for you to decide to get better. All you can do is do a lot of drawing regularly and give your brain and spine nerves possibilities to adapt. Adapting is easier when you're relaxed, so don't worry about getting better, just draw. And if it's shit recognize your errors, but don't beat yourself up over them.

If you draw coom though fuck off

Yo listen up, here's the story
About a little guy that lives in a blue world
And all day and all night
And everything he sees is just blue
Like him, inside and outside
Blue his house with a blue little window
And a blue Corvette
And everything is blue for him
And himself and everybody around
'Cause he ain't got nobody to listen (to listen, to listen, to listen)

If you're not doing something creative, then that part of the brain isn't being exercised. I don't think you can learn drawing by reading a book, and then sitting down at a blank piece of paper like "now what?" It's such an absurd idea, yet you read about some /beg/ doing that exact thing every day. You've *got* to doodle or sketch or *something*.

Try drawing circles and filling them in with interesting colors. You'll improve hand-eye coordination, stimulate creative thought, have "aha!" moments, you'll learn things about your medium whether its trad or digital, etc. Plus it feels pretty nice to see a piece of paper filled edge to edge. Do all your coloring in one direction, focus on staying inside the lines, try to control the amount of pressure you apply to your crayon, colored pencil, tablet pen, or whatever you're using.

You're putting unfair limitations on what kind of drawings you will allow yourself to make. So don't do that. Start small, and work your way up. Have fun and...just draw.

>don't draw again for weeks
that's the main problem. you have to do it everyday of the week, you have to date your work, you have to examine and redo previous work
>incredible urge to create
ask yourself exactly what you want to create on the page. And I mean write down descriptions, research other sources for reference and inspiration. do you want a character to show an specific emotional expression? study faces, poses, types of dress to express that. How would a confident person carry themselves vs a melancholy person?
Knowing what you actually want to draw will give you motivation to learn, because you have a goal which you are either getting closer to or further away from and if you're getting farther away then you ask yourself why and correct it.
Work General to Specific, get it down on paper and fix the details later and I think you'll learn a lot faster. BUT you have to do it everyday, feeling discouraged? Take a snack break and jump back in, take out your computers wi-fi card if you have to.

Since Ive made the thread Ive been drawing every day for 2 hours and I feel like I'm improving, and youre completely right, I kept jumping in the deep end because I wanted to draw something complex and was getting frustrated when it wouldnt go perfectly, when I shouldve been studying the basics to reach the point where I understand how to draw complex things. Thanks for the advice.

I dont draw coom, Ive been drawing while listening to music and drinking tea so its more relaxing and less stressful too.

I know, I'm currently practising drawing basic construction and gesture, its been so long since I reached the coloring stage of the drawing that I'd probably have no idea what I'm doing, so I might try and do some coloring today. Drawing started off as fun for me but my mentality completely changed and now its become competitive and perfectionist and I feel like Ive lost the ability to have fun drawing.
>>5174836

I used to annotate my drawings with what to correct and change, but usually I'd just give up before I got to that. I often draw by trial and error without much coordination so I'll try and reference and get a better idea of what the drawing I want to create will look like. I'm going to draw every day from now on, even if its just a little.

Thanks for the advice anons, I'll try very hard to finish a drawing today
