The most important thing is to have direction in mind. Once a general brush stroke direction is established, you can deviate from it a little like Sargent's painting, but you can still tell that the strokes largely follow one flow

I just don’t get it.... why do my edges feel so bad? When I blend it becomes smudgy mud, when I do value steps from a block in it looks like this... is it a value, brush or stroke/direction problem? Or just unrefined, needs more work?
