IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the Drawthread with fundamental exercises.

POST DRAWINGS YOU NEED HELP WITH!

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in picresize.com

Sticky document:

LINEWORK:
Should I be using the 'real G-Pen' pen in Clip Studio Paint that fluctuates in width depending on pen pressure or should I use a pen that maintains the same width regardless of pressure and just manually size it up and down as needed? I see some people using the anime swoosh pen look and some people with the same style using a regular uniform line size for the outline and varying line sizes in details and inner lines, all of them having a steady width. This is confusing the fuck out of me.

Wut? Just turn on size jitter for all pens. Real g pen is only different with it having a texture

>> No.5168827

>>5168824
That's what I was asking, just couldn't think of the word. So size jitter ON for doing linework? Is there ever any reason to turn it off for line work? Seems like the result would be a lot more smooth and consistent, but maybe lack character.

Turn it off if you don't want various line weight. I'm pretty sure mangaka use gpens when traditional because they do offer a wider range of line weight compared to normal pens. Personally pens without size jitter feels bad to me

Yeah I think I just need to practice. I do like being able to swoop a big thick line in that tapers into a thin one but as a result some of my lines get all thick or thin in random places unintentionally. I guess it'll come with time.

Posted this in the last thread, but does anyone have tips for practicing drawing from observation? I've been doing the poses from Bargue (in like an hour and not with sight-size, which I know is incorrect), and I spend a bunch of time autistically measuring everything, but I can never get it to be a perfect match. Do I just need to experiment with blocking out big shapes and using sighting techniques until I discover a good process, or what?

>Draw thing one more time/erase mistakes and observe more carefuly. Correct the fucked up part.
>Well done. Next thing.

Blocking shapes helps.
Mileage. Correct stuff and be cautious but don't be autistic perfecting sketches.

This is a dwarf knight. It's the first painting I've done that didn't make me want to kill myself, but I at least feel like I've finally learned a little and have made some improvements. What should I work on? I feel like it lacks texture, completely and I don't know what to do. I also feel like most of the shapes are totally lost and the lighting is probably really bad/wrong.

I've been studying that stuff for a week and while I think I'm starting to get it, it's just extremely boring to do it properly.

Think about the eye you just made as a 3D shape. It follows a vanishing point different from the other eye, but at the same time it's a sphere partially occluded by the eyelid so other parts of it are being revealed as it rotates. A good place to start with building the socket would be to think of how it vertically descends from the brow and how it pulls back and horizantally towards the ear.

I asked in /salt/ but the threads about to die and no response, so ill ask the place I was born in

What are some flaws in this piece that I can improve upon?
From my own eyes:
>torso/hip twist and anatomy
>hair (wet hair, drooping of the bangs)
>colour composition/choices
>environment/perspective
Tried doing something besides black lining everything -> wand tool fill, tried to use colours and values to represent lines and only using lines when absolutely necessary (like on inner lines) I like how it looks compared to what I normally do but I need to work on it more. Still new but I dont want to use that as an excuse

Been mostly grinding 2-3p perspective, still life of forms (geometric shapes in black and white stuff), and figures daily. Anything else I should add?

Am I still /beg/? This is an imagination piece except for hands and character ref. I still feel /beg/ but I dont know. Not really an important question as I dont mind if I'm still /beg/ but just curious

Does anyone know a good method for actually developing a structured study plan? My primary goal is figure drawing and I feel like I need some kind of academic schedule to keep me on track. I need to get a daily checklist of "draw x number of y" for a few different things so I can have some focus, and maybe once I've completed one group of study I move onto a new study plan.

Right now I don't know what's valuable to practice and when I should move on from one thing, and I keep jumping around between methods and exercises which screws me up. This uncertainty of what's valuable leaves me unconfident in actually developing a study plan, and it kinda just feels like I've been flailing around for a while. This flailing makes what I know kinda lopsided and fluctuate, it's like I'll get better at one thing and then worse at another since the methods Im constantly switching between neglect something else.

plz help.

Not him, but calm down, anon, or at least channel your anger into industriousness. There are always some days when it seems to be impossible to nail it, especially during your baby steps. As a training wheels for straight lines and cubes take a thicker fineliner or even fine marker and then go thinner when you feel confident. Some angles are more comfortable for straight lines than others, look for them and rotate paper to evade uncomfortable ones. Curves are easier to draw when your hand is on their "in" side. You can use ruler at first to draw cubes, that would be a good exercise to learn to feel angles and perspective.
But actually.. nevermind. There are people who do everything and there are people who do nothing. For now, you're good for nothing. Ngmi.

I suggest being more patient, then. Your head and the reference are at completely different angles, even. Take the time to make sure you've captured the reference in its most basic form before adding details like eyes and a mouth. Maybe do some rough constructions and then overlay them to the ref to see how close you are or aren't.
It also helps to know what's what on the face, so you aren't just guessing as you go along.

the only info a straight spine is gonna convey is distance from head to pelvis. imo you should be looking for other things to study between those two points that swoop inward or outward.

but also, i think you're seeing straights where there shouldn't be straights. there's one drawing where the figure is squatting from the side profile. the back should not be straight, the neck shouldn't be coming straight upwards from the shoulders. maybe try drawing your straights lightly, and then studying whether there's actually a curve happening.

I think they're just using the name AO in this case but that's actually just more detailed shadows that wouldn't work so well with another light angle.

>> No.5171110

>>5171066
Yeah, I can see how you were reading a straight, there. There's a lot of things that give the illusion of just a straight column.

You can figure out the back by looking for clues to how the pelvis and ribcage are pointed. It looks like her pelvis is rotated forwards and her shoulders are compensating. Her neck is also coming out forwards, but it's hard to see because her head's tilted up and the back of her neck is obscured. The neutral position for the neck is pointed forwards, btw.

>> No.5171116

>>5171109
Also, you probably could still use 3D models to see how it works.
I'd just use blender, place some stuff in it and turn the AO and texture maps on and off while moving the light source to see what impact it has.

If I have to do that, why not just paint it in color in the first place?

>> No.5171159

>>5171139

You have to take the value of the colours into account while painting the greys. If you paint a yellow as a dark value for instance, it may look green. Red and green are mid greys, blue is darker, etc. If you deviate too far from the value range you may not get the colour you want. Might be a different problem, though, it's hard to tell without seeing your picture.

His left arm looks longer than his right, might be because his shoulder seems to stick too far out and not adhering to the perspective. Left forearm muscle looks somewhat too triangular, right looks good aside from the middle muscle (triceps?) going to the elbow. As another guy pointed out, veins look unnatural. I also feel they are too prominent. Eyebrow expression is good, nose feels somewhat off. Chin is good, but lower lip lacks detail compared to nearby areas, and thus makes it look like his teeth instead of his lip.

>Try to shade

For a cartoony style like my flat color pumpkin man here, would you say one tone for skin, one tone for shade, and one tone for highlight is enough? I see other artists using 2-3 tones for different areas of shading and sometimes two highlights. When I try that it looks too busy, but when I try to just put one or two areas of 'dark shade' where I imagine they would be with the light source, it looks flat and unfinished. This isn't even scratching the surface of airbrush shadows or whatever, that's a whole nother headache, I'm still trying to figure out where to cel shade shadows. Any advice?

You're going to put out dozens of subpar work until you get good. It's just going to take a lot longer if you refuse to try or finish things. For instance you aren't going to get used to your workflow and process if you don't follow it to the end. Rounded masculine features on the face, broad shoulders vs slender hips, etc. I was going to say the chest looked weird but I think it's mostly in the context that it's on a manly body. I think the biggest problem is just the wide neck and masculine trapezius definition. A woman's shoulder's don't have that triangular look, she's more trapezius than neck. Design wise think like a straight horizontal line for the shoulders and a slender neck. The muscularity shouldn't interfere with feminine traits. This maybe isn't the best example as far as "tomboys" go, but even muscular women with boyish faces will look notably feminine. The difference between tomboys and more feminine looking women is mostly stylistic and fairly subtle.
