My goal this year is having my art published in some form, in a magazine, book, etc. How can I go about doing this?

Format a small artbook in InDesign and ask a quote from an online printer to get it printed.
You can also publish it to Amazon and they do the printing for you.

Get somewhat popular on social media with a recognizable style, I know a couple of people no one here ever heard of who got approached by printed magazines with paid opportunities.
Forget about that happening if you’re just bald space marine man #492745 or generic anime nigger #7349384756

I've done editorial illustration since 2015. I got my first job the same way I've gotten all my major freelance illustration gigs:
1. Put together a curated, cohesive portfolio of your best work on a real portfolio site (wix, Squarespace, Wordpress, custom built, etc.)
2. Identify the business/publication/etc that you want to work for or get published with
3. Look up the contact info of the art/creative director (usually on their website)
4. Contact them to pitch your illustrations and to be considered for future projects
5. Rinse and repeat forever.

Social media is largely unnecessary. It is a passive approach to self promotion and should be supplementary to your more proactive marketing efforts. You do not need a large social media following to work freelance.

People who buy art professionally rarely look on instagram. The OP above >>5167220 is correct. Art directors and art buyers maintain a file of submitted portfolios to pull contractors out of.

For instance, if you want to do album art - you need to contact record labels and band managers. Most of them have contacts online, somewhere. Same for magazines, book publishers, etc. You have to make yourself known to them, appear professional, and show you can complete work. They don't go on social media because the odds of hiring a flake who will be 1/4 done when the deadline hits, or just ghosts.

If you're going to be an artist, and not wallow in waifu/furry porn world, they're not coming looking for you. They don't have the time, and it's too risky.

this is like asking to find something that you can play in your VCR, newsstands are dead anon
it's all digital and it's all free + premium, like
>you give them the coom version
>you give them female attention
>you say that gay people are great and white people are awful

I don't know if we browse the same internet but all I see that gets to any degree of popularity is exactly le epic man with a stick against fantasy backdrop or anime girls, most of the time fanart, drawn in one of like 4 styles depending on where it sits on the cartoony/realistic spectrum. I never, ever see anybody except well-known celebrities that were popular long before the algorithms who does anything remotely unique and is popular. I have several examples of people I knew who were amazing and had really fresh great ideas and a unique style become immediately popular the moment they switched to generic anime tits.
Please tell me where to unlock this secret internet where people making non shit art actually make it, so that at least I can follow art blogs again.

And he isn't doing anything remotely unique except living in a country that people worship.
