if you're doing desktop, do go for it. TVPaint is honestly one of the best, only as long as you approach it like a classical animator. You won't find any tools like character rigging or any shit like that. Its basically Photoshop and CSP drawing tools mashed together with the super simple timeline of Adobe Flash. scroll down a bit. A while ago, Adobe shut down their servers for activation because it'd be more expensive to keep them running, so instead they just give out the licenses for free. You are clearly already really good at drawing, but not great at animating. It seems like you are practicing in a way that does a tiny bit of animating, and then a lot of drawing, which would make sense if your goal was to improve you're drawing, but to improve your animating, you should do a lot of animation and a little bit of drawing. Maybe take a break from this one and do some other animation bases, or some flower bags or whatever.

>> No.5145659

>>5145357
I'm aware. My goal is to finish it, as it's my very first attempt at animation. I'm spending most of my time learning new little techniques for workflow improvement. The only reason I hadn't completely dropped it at the sketching phase was I had already put a ton of time into it, and sunk cost just kept kicking in, so I decided that instead of dreading dropping it, I would just finish it, polish it to the best of my ability, then learn from the plethora of mistakes I made along the way, which is how my workflow has sorta always gone

>>5145402
Tail isn't meant to be doing either, just wrapping and holding on

I haven't commented on this yet but at this point you are just polishing a turd and you are going to learn far more by just starting a fresh canvas and animating something completely different and unrelated to get some exercise, then coming back to this topic later. Ideally whatever you pick next should be something that takes you less than 5 minutes a frame.
Everything about this is unnatural or wasn't planned because you are animating straight-ahead or something weird.
I tried tracing out your timing/spacing of the tail tip in >>5151402 , pic related. It doesn't move in a smooth arc on the way left, there are 3 frames right next to each other randomly in the middle of the motion so it just stops there then speeds up, and you have absolutely no ease-in/out at either end so the transitions are extremely abrupt.
Changing tiny details like how it comes out of her ass, or the angle it wraps around the dick in >>5151374 , are all completely missing the point because you are focusing on making individual frames pretty pictures instead of fixing the animation and no matter how anatomically perfect each frame is the motion will still look like shit if you don't plan that as first priority.
>>5150666 is also correct, the hands looks like south park puppets because you are trying to animate something complex (hands) and since those are a pain in the ass to draw 20 times you took a shortcut and just moved around a paper cutout. I totally understand *why* you chose to do this, but it looks like shit.

anyway since you have been working on this for a while you obviously have the work ethic to get something done if you start fresh

Good job anon, but you need to linger a little bit on each important scene. You don't need to introduce a brand new action every second. Feel free to linger on specific movements or stills for 5 or maybe 10 seconds. All anime do this so they can reduce the amount of work they have to do and fill out as much of the runtime as possible. You also don't have to pan the camera so much. You can just cut.

Also a personal thing I think you should add: Eren wants to kill as many people as possible, so don't make him punch a single spot over and over like the anime. He wants as much area damage as possible. Maybe you should include wide swipes or something?

I don't really know what you mean by "clean" but I'll try
Visually, almost everything is a vector I either drew in Illustrator or Solidworks, so they scale and warp really well without jaggies.
The motion probably feels very crisp because it's at 60fps. However, I originally animated this at 44fps because the song is at 110bpm and this gives me an even 24 frames between beats, which saves me a lot of pain syncing things. Since everything is shape layers and not video content, AE can interp between keyframes at any arbitrary framerate.
The rest of it is trying to follow animation principles. You can scale x and y independently for squash/stretch, or play around with the distort effects. Nearly every motion, rotation, size change, etc, has overshoot then a long settling time to a final position. AE has a graph editor which makes it very easy to see the ease-in/out behavior of any parameter. I usually accelerate out of the first position, hit the overshoot on the accent, then decelerate into the final position. I only do linear motions for bounces between two objects.
Lastly, to make impacts weighty, I usually parent everything in the scene to a null object and animate that so that the floor/scene moves in response to impacts.

I'm starting to rethink my appreciation for typical action scenes in anime like this where they do a ton of camera moves and close ups in combination with action that is far removed from anything possible in reality.
I think it is actually easier to animate these type of scenes than it is to animate something like an old person carrying some heavy groceries down the street in a wide shot. The more subtle and grounded the animation the harder (and I presume more satisfying) it seems to be.

When I think of good action scenes in movies I think of something more like the hallway scene in Oldboy or primae Jackie Chan where they just hold the shot on tired humans trying to survive. It just feels more honest and engaging rather than these scenes that my eyes seem to glaze over the longer they go on.

I assume this style developed out of the limitations of tv show budgets, like a lot of anime specific quirks, but people seem to see it as high quality animation, or sakuga, now.

Anyway just an observation inspired by reading Miyazaki's Starting Point recently.

>> No.5168329

>>5168175
I actually agree with you. The webm in OP's post is a very good example for it. Yeah, the drawings look clean and well drawn but there is no sense of motion for it. The poses look very stiff and they don't really connect well to each other, so the whole shot looks very rigid and stale. These shots are only harder than regular shots when the animator creates a well planned camera movement along with smooth character animation, otherwise they are easier to pull off since you don't have to be careful about the characters being in model.

>> No.5168556

>>5168329

I like youses! OP's post is a really good example of high skill at making something look good with low time & effort. Like, how many pictures did they draw? 5? 10? then just move em around at the right tiems? Very good. Very efficient. But, we don't come to this thread because we like bargain bin anim, right? So yeah, well grounded animation is definitely deep and difficult. It takes a lot to reproduce real weight, real effort, and show the personality within that weight and effort. So I can see the appeal in old person groceries, but there's definitely a whole other skill tree in sakuga or whatever, nice smears, explosions, shock waves, sparkly nonsense. It's good and pretty art that takes skill...
I say there's 3 different paths here u think of:
- portraying story elements in visually appealing ways with efficient use of time
- showing realistic weight & emotion
- Razzle Dazzle!
and every animator needs a bit of all of them, but most def is possible to go much further with any one and kinda forget the others. If you go far enuf people won't care you've forgotten the others, but it's better not to forget em complete like I think.

First of all, you said 10 minutes to that other anon for the entire thing, not 10 minutes for each frame. Second of all, you are oversimplifying it because animating isn't a static work since you need to first plan out your sequence then draw your key frames, cleaning, do the inbetweens, color the poses, compositing and maybe some final adjustments and fixes. Third of all, I assume that animation was done by a single person and even if you are a talented animator it would take you more than 4-5 days to do animation alone which includes cleaning and inbetweens. Not to mention you need to keep track of being in model so your animation doesn't look sloppy, and that is why you are full of shit.

I look forward to seeing ur future work.

study animation duh? go grab media player classic, use the ctrl arrow keys and study the frames, anime tends to be on 2s or 3s or even 4s, 1s depending on motion, more western shit is on 1s because theyre vector/tweened

As a studio animator I animate around 40-75 seconds a week.

But that's using puppets with little drawing.

what do you mean you can't even manage to practice? unless you either have some physical injury or you have 12 hour shifts at the wagecage factory there is nothing physically preventing you from practicing drawing.
As long as you have a workable understanding of volume/form you can animate floursacks, and even without that you can do stickfigures. As long as you're not trying to do everything straight ahead and you plan your timing/spacing before putting down more than 3 frames then you'll be fine.

>>5184268
I'm not a huge fan of sakugabooru because most of the highly rated stuff on it is just flashy fight scenes.

wow, really? the production with the highest quota i've worked on was 400 frames/wk and even that seemed on the high end

There are real brain injuries out there, but I bet you mean some meme brain injury, like adhd wich can be managed with medication and or other strategies, or something like "Someone hurt my feelings". Why did you come to this thread to lament not trying?
