Good sense of form. The lack of bounced light obviously made your job easier, but it would help if there was more bounced light on his left side to pick out the form more. Also I’m not so sure the very bright, long highlights on the trapezius and collar bone are accurate, but I can’t talk much cuz I hate painting complex values too

sword feels like styrofoam because there is zero weight to how it is held and neither is there any additional indication of its eigt
it sort of feels like she is offering it to someone
also perspective on the handle circle thing is a bit messed up as it is on the entire sword but I don't blame you since it is difficult perspective to get on an object like that, you can chalk it up to just weird shape and no one will notice

I've heard of people recommending checking values with BnW so you shouldn't be afraid of using it. I'm not great with values in color myself but I think that's because I don't check via grayscale. Also you shouldn't speed, you should work at whatever pace you find yourself working in. A better rule to avoid overworking things is 'It's finished when you think of it as finished, and any ideas you have to add later are not to be added'.

Digital art suffers from a lack of randomness, which thus causes a lack of happy accidents and forces an excessive amount of deliberation. Whilst I do not recommend using heavily textured brushes, I do recommend trying to increase randomness. Try going into your program's list of brushes and experimenting with each in terms of finding something that behaves more like a traditional tool, and then try editing its settings to be more to your taste. My lineart brush is based on a brush that was actually made for shading metal in my program, but I found by tweaking it that it could be used to make a brush that behaves more like an ink pen.

Just trying out a lot of different ways to draw a face/head.
I think drawing the “skull” first really helps.
my eyes are a bit fucky still. It’s tricky to get them as i want them. Mostly just draw over and over and somehow it “clicks”
>>513852
I’m not the best painter but try painting big zones of color first and then add details. Then you could add as much volume as you want and help yourself find a balance in the painting just by looking.
What kinds of colors do you want to use? Where should they go? Think about stuff like that. Although it depends what you want to do.

I like your eye. The horse head was actually the first piece I made after installing Krita, and I was fucking around with the brushes because I really liked their texture. So I went ham with that. Was also feeling a lot into Beksinski at the time (I was not attempting to emulate him btw, but it'd be dishonest to say his work wasn't affecting me in any way).
This other piece was made right after that one. But yeah, in general, I don't really have a cohesive style, of sorts. One day I draw more one way, the next day I draw slightly different. Which I don't think is necessarily bad per se, but the inconsistency might be due to something less favourable. Might also not be the best thing ever if I ever plan on selling anything/doing commissions.

So I thought let's just make her sit outside somewhere, like in the nature, but everytime I try to draw a tree I wanna kill myself, I'm fucking bad at it. So my last thought was to make her sit somewhere indoor, maybe on the couch idk... And that's it.

Yeah I actually made the same change with the figure on the left right after I posted, I made it much bigger. I tried a few different ideas, but I wasn't super happy about any other perspectives since the magic doorway is supposed to be the main subject of the picture. I mostly just want to limit unused/dead space and make the whole thing feel a little interesting since it's such a simple concept.

>>5139199
That's hard to say. I have a Twitter account with about 5k followers because I used to be a streamer in the TTRPG space. I stopped doing that a while ago, but way back when I tried taking commissions for graphic design and stuff via that account. I never really went anywhere with it, but when COVID killed my job, I decided to start answering messages I was still getting every few weeks asking if I was taking commissions (based on a post from 2018).

Since then, I basically do everything on Twitter. as much as I hate the place. That's where the majority of people see my design work (thanks to being at the top of Google Images) and I've been able to bring in illustration commissions from that even though I kinda suck.

You don't really need to be good to get commissions, you just need eyes on your work. So if you have absolutely nothing as far as social media presence, you'll need to build that up. You can also try using Fiverr and Etsy at the same time and see if that brings in orders. Post your work everywhere you can where the kind of people who commission works tend to congregate and have a note in your name or profile that says you're open for work.

It's tough, but you can do it.

I don't want to say this piece is fundamentally broken... but it might be. Over all it looks great but there are so many things that conflict with one another in terms of perspective, anatomy and spacial relationships. I tried to fix a few things. One main thing that bugged me was that the sword looked like it was bent sideways. You created that illusion by shading it brighter toward the bottom than the top, That would have been ok I think, if you hadn't added that curved bit to the top of it, but since you had a variation of light AND the curved blade, you created the illusion of the blade having a big sideways bend to it. My fix isn't perfect but I think it helps.

This looks pretty good in terms of proportions. I think it would benefit from a sharper line/sharper edges in select places, like the contour of the chin for instance or maybe just more sharp edges in general really. Everything is sort of hazy and out of focus, like the back of the head just sort of disappears into the background, so we can’t really get a good sense of the form and size of the head. I find that the back of the head, that furthest away corner where the side plane meets the top plane of the head if you visualize the head just as a box, you don’t wanna leave that out because it says a lot about the tilt and rotation of the head in space. I don’t know if that last sentence made sense, but in general you want to, again, visualizing the head (or anything you’re drawing, really) as a box, you want to accentuate the corners and the sides, ie where there are one or more plane changes, as opposed to the planes themselves, because that’s how you most effectively communicate the 3dimensionality of the thing you’re drawing. Like, any edge or corner of a box says much more about it spatially than any point inside a plane of the same box ever does.

Maybe you could also push the values a bit more and go even darker in the downward planes like the bottom of the nose or the top lip, like really accentuate the core shadow of those areas where the form starts to turn away from the light. This will also better communicate the form. BeCause it is maybe a bit flat as it is now, too. It’s basically the same point as the one above about bringing out the corners and edges of things, the core shadow is basically the equivalent of edge of a more rounded box.
Jesus, okay I’ll stop writing now, I guess tldr is more sharp edges and think more about construction and geometry as you are drawing.

You're applying color without a solid understanding of construction, anatomy, perspective, or lighting.

You're just painting without actually building a real picture underneath first. So when you just smear colors into the vague shape of a person or a rock, it's not going to look right. I would start over, and focus on the major details; where are the planes, lights and shadows? What is the anatomy and pose doing? Is this following a set perspective that remains consistent across all of the objects?

Then try applying your color on top. Also, you seem to only be going up and down in tone to get your highlights and shadows, but not actually really going outside the color. You can, and should, make your shadows a different value (usually cooler) than your midtone. If you're painting in brown for the skin, push your value up towards green or blue or purple for your shadow.

the hatching is nice everywhere except the veins, which start to become abstract elements rather than definitively veins on an arm.

I think that mostly stems from them not being hatched, they are represented with single continuous lines, when instead they should be hatched the same as everything else.

You went horizontal on the veins when you should've gone vertical, basically. I don't blame you, veins are a pain in the ass to hatch properly, I would've excluded them altogether cause I'm lazy.

Nice. This definitely has more finish. it's obvious that you have worked more on the individual features this time, so that it is not just the eye(s) that stand out like in the last one, but the entire face. Proportions are good (again).

I still think this one suffers from a lot of the same issues that the previous one did, though. I just reread my previous critique and it was pretty incoherent even to me, so I don't blame you if you didn't get much actionable advice from that. But let me try again :P

IMO, this would still benefit from some nice sharp lines in select places to sort of hem in the face and separate things clearly from each other. The chin especially is crying out to me for a much sharper, darker contour line to separate the head from the neck and to clearly show us that it is two separate objects, with one (the head) being in front of the other (the neck).
A more general rule for where you may want to use a clear and crisp line to emphasize the contour of a thing is wherever overlap occurs, i.e. chin overlapping neck, hair falling in over the face, top eyelid in front of the eyeball, the top lip in front of bottom lip, the sides of the nostrils in front of the cheeks, in the case of a 3/4 profile, the nose in front of the far side of the face, etc.
Just like with value where you have a range from white to black with gradients of gray in between, I also like to think of lines/edges as being on a spectrum, from the broad, soft gradient to the very sharp, thin line. And just like having a very dark value in a light area can be great for grabbing the viewers attention, so can a sharp line used sparingly and with purpose be a very effective way of emphasizing key points in your drawing. I think someone like Fechin is a master of a purposeful use of line, so maybe his drawings would be interesting to look at? (pic related)

I had some other points that I wanted to bring up, but it's getting late now. - I'll write those up tomorrow.

I think the boots tongues should not fuse with the pants lines. Makes that whole section "flat"
I think you can add something to the shirt ifbyou think it needs more "personality".
That's mostly my input, I know all other anons will talk about shapes and silhouettes so Im skipping that

urs is watercolour? I think it would look cool if u didnt leave the pencil lines - it would vibrate more. I usually avoid watercolours cause i find its a very unforgivable medium.

You have many watercolor soluble pencils! I actually use those often. They work as colored pencils and you can dilute em in water if u want.

I used a white pencil for the highlights - I erased too but mostly to repaint with white over it. That's one of the reasons I used green paper - to get that bright white on the top.

I'm basing my critique on the assumption that you're replicating the feeling that is conveyed in pic related.

deer doesn't have weight (front leg doesn't look like it's supporting weight).

deer is not in the focus of the viewer, compositionally bad (deer doesn't have to be in the center, but it's too far into the background for the viewer to transpose themselves into it's perspective).

bugs under the leaves is overkill, and would lead to clashing concepts, the main concept is the terror that is conveyed from the dark bushes. Putting creepy bugs under the leaves gives an "out" for the viewer to focus on those instead of focusing on the dark bushes. Notice how in pic related there's literally nothing to focus on but the dog and the dark door, the viewer has to confront the idea that the painting is conveying, and has no where else to "run".

Beg here, been drawing some simple characters as part of me trying to draw more of the stuff I want to draw rather than just coursework. I don't know anything about rendering and don't really have plans to approach it much yet.

Your painting's not as bad as they make it out to be. You're clearly challenging yourself and whether or not it comes out as a success it's good that you're trying. Keep at it.

Trying to do something different than normal. I rarely place figures in an actual space. Trying to give weight to the character through interaction with the environment in this, I did bother detailing the environment too much in this since it really was only meant to be a practice drawing, I just took it to completion (mostly)
