For those that have already read Hampton, how do I get the most out of his book?
Should I keep trying to copy the diagrams he has drawn, or is it a waste of time?
Stop shitposting for a second, and join me in my Hampton studies, /ic/!
Let us share and discuss our studies together! LET US GET SOME ART GAINS TOGETHER!!

No real reason, its just preference. Same shit with Vilppu.

You should copy his wrapping lines too. That's arguably more important than the contours

I think you should be very comfortable with construction before working through Hampton. Also, watch his demos on his youtube channel and use something like Zarins to actually know how the muscles look like irl. I didn't like his drawings in the book, found them a bit hard to replicate when drawing my own poses, but maybe it's because I drew digitally. Maybe check out morpho simplified forms and anatomy as well.

you do not do studies of diagrams in instructional art books, gotta love seeing this over and over for years with people reveling in their frustration over not getting anything from years of mindless copying. look at the pieces he gives, how he breaks the body down and try to utilize it on your own, to break apart and understand something youre observing. if all you do is copy someone elses observation what is it youre really doing? nothing. derivation not iteration

drawing and copying the diagrams were some of the single most helpful things I could've done to learn from a teacher. I don't think I copied enough.

But you're right in that if thats all you do, then you'll stagnate. You have to make your own art too. But its bad advice to tell people to not copy diagrams. Drawing from something is how you truly see something.

he went through a weird phase where he elongated his model's necks (he mentions it on his blog). c'mon man, it's obvious the guy can draw.

its not hard to piece it together that you're supposed to use the shit the book teaches you to draw real people when the book tells you that's what you're supposed to do from the very beginning
you study the methods and the diagrams he shows you, you apply that to drawing real people, then you use same method to draw figures from imagination. that's how you get the most out of the book. spend most of your time doing the second step.
