Drawing different faces well and consistently (from panel to panel in a comic, for example) is hard and cool. If you don't do that you're a bit of a hack and your art looks cheap.

Artists that draw faces well: Katsuhiro Otomo, Moebius, etc.

Sameface fags: Just about every amerimutt capeshitter, including the icons such as Jim Lee, etc. The only way to tell characters apart is by looking at their costume.

Otomo doesn't have sameface. That's one of the reasons why his art is so great, his characters are different at the bone structure level. You don't need to look at their clothes or hair to tell them apart, and he doesn't need to make their differences really exaggerated to achieve that. Moebius could do the same thing. The differences are subtle and consistent.

>when you need to draw someone young and attractive, especially if it's a female, sameface is unavoidable
It is unavoidable if you are normal, if you are great it is not. That's why those two are so good. Some artists can draw beautiful women and make their faces different at the same time.

It's basically "where are her organs"/mendrawingwomen tier insult mainly pushed by eternal begs who can't into style. Everybody I've seen use the term draws like that loss comic, and they're almost always unevenly applying the criticism to anime while ignoring it in their favorites. Anecdotal but still something I've noticed.

It isn't even technically untrue, some artists could stand to diversify their faces but in the end it's never really the main issue. The issue usually is that the artist can't or won't draw expressive faces responding to a variety of situations. You can use essentially the same proportions over and over and as long as the attitude changes it'll feel different. Which is what anime and all stylized or idealized art at its best does, check out Asobasi Asobase for an extreme example.

You're not a hack if you have sameface, if you're successful despite your sameface then it just goes to show that that face must be appealing, or the rest of the art is good enough to make up for it.
Drawing varied faces consistently is very difficult. Much more difficult than you'd think. It doesn't exactly get much easier the longer you draw either, since unless you specifically study drawing a lot of different faces you're going to wind up just drawing features that are attractive for the obvious reason, resulting in a lesser variety in faces. Basically it's a problem that doesn't naturally get ironed out by your normal art path, it's something you need to go out of your way to practice to avoid the problem. And it doesn't necessarily pay off. People only give a shit if you're really popular and the sameface is super noticeable (like, for example, Takeuchi). So it's pretty much a problem only when it isn't actually going to hurt you.
