the more you know what something is supposed to look like, the harder it is to fool yourself that it looks right. You might draw a snail that looks nothing like any real snail and still think it looks like a snail because you don't have any deeper feeling about how it's supposed to look. You know what people look like, and on top of that you know what this statue in particular looks like. This makes it much harder to tell yourself that your drawing is close to it.
