I used to do trad art quite a lot, had a brief pause and then started doing digital. I think the first drawing came much more naturally to me and nowadays I seem to want to fit into some sort of box of what digital drawings should look like. It is hard to stay on track of drawing from the soul

If not bait then I'll explain why people are confused at your progress. The recent one has a severe case of pillow shading and lack of hard edges/shadows, not to mention the total lack of line weight that you had before. Because of the coloring job I honestly can't tell if you've improved in terms of other stuff, but you really need to do rendering studies or just go back to black & white because what you are currently doing is doing your art absolutely no favors.

It's hard to find anything to even compare. Left was October 2018, I didn't do any real drawing in 2019, and right is a few months ago when I picked up digital painting again and started doing commissions. Also I do paint in color now, I was always intimidated by it (still am, but I'm trying).

If you're still here anon, just wondering how you started? Right now I feel like I'm going down the route of "always practice never do a finished drawing", but that's just because most days I actually don't feel that creative, or I actually just WANT to study something that I'm not sure how to draw. I'm going through gesture and figure drawing right now and going through both Proko and New Masters Academy's Michael Huston lessons. I'm also planning to watch Marshall's 1994 Perspective lessons recommended by some anons here earlier too after that.

I figure this is the best use of my time since I do work 9 - 5 and hardly get as much time as I'd like to really practice and get better. Keep going down this road I guess? Just interested to hear about how often you studied vs. attempting to see what you learned by making finished pictures.

Mad gains, is digital art easier than trad?

>> No.5098007

>>5097766

No, digital is hard. I probably scratched 10% of what it can do for me as an artist. I don't even know what multiply or screen does and how having 100+ layers makes things manageable.

Now, if want to hold a pencil like daddy Vilppu I can certainly do it in digital but it won't give me the exact experience as in traditional. That's why I like to juggle between digital and trad up when I feel like it.

The easiest part is to not draw....

That is not an easy question. I loved comics and monsters and all that shit as a kid, so it was just natural to draw all over everything trying to make cool shit I saw. But I was, am still not, a "practice" person in the sense that when I decided to take art more seriously in high school, I was jealous of the people who could just fill a sketchbook for fun. I can't.

I took figure drawing in school, I dropped out of art college, and I spent a little while learning anatomy and shit for Zbrush/3D. Other than that, I just kinda do stuff. I don't study or practice (which shows), I never did either intense study, nor "making finished pictures", hence why I suck so much.

Not them but this is a dangerous attitude to have. I used to think the same way, that I wasn't ready for shading until my anatomy was a little better. Then I'd get that little bit better, but feel I should improve even more. Now I've poured all my time into anatomy and I'm basically having to learn shading from /beg/ level. Don't listen to people telling you not to polish turds, learning to finish things is a skill all its own you shouldn't put off.

https://imgur.com/a/ebRSFRh here you go, and thanks!
In terms of specific drawing-related studies - i've just been focusing on how to make my linework convey space, depth and perspective. I've not been studying any specific artists or methods, just been grinding every day, trying to figure out how to get my thoughts on paper which is sooo fucking hard, even as someone who's been drawing their whole life. Getting to a point where i can draw a skull pretty accurately from memory has taken me 2 years of intense practice, and i'm still not quite there yet. And to be honest, i'm not entirely sure how i do it. It's just intuition at this point.
Pic related is where i want to end up (not mine). An extremely fine line that is both loose to avoid "closing off" the drawing, and also shows a mastery of internalized perspective with great spatial qualities. So good!

First off, sorry if it’s ugly. I don’t have access to my pc and I am discovering my new iPad. Basically 2020 was a grind year. I doodled around here and there for years and never took it seriously until 2020. It’s my grind year because I wanted to finish a comic for once and for all and about 90% of my drawing time is for the comic. One page a day, hand coloured. After nearly exactly one year of grind, I finally did it. It’s done. I have lost the page count because I have left 95% of the pages at home and I am currently not at home. But it’s at least 250 pages since I’ve used up 5 blocks of paper (50 pages each).
I’ve finally let myself draw something other than funny birds by December, thanks to /ic/.
What else can I say about this comic? I learned a lot, I did a lot of research, poses (posed myself in front of my camera), mimicked my characters’ voices, even managed to travel to fucking Iceland amid the pandemic to gather about 900 of pictures of references (landscapes and architecture) since the story happens in Iceland. Will I do it again? Fuck yes, episode two is already in the works. But before starting the first page, I’ll take a break from drawing comics, maybe for a month. Then I’ll be ready to commit another 200ish pages for the next episode. Thank you for your understanding

Any advice on improving?
What books and courses should I pick up?

Some of the drawings on the right are from early in the year.
I improved at the start of the year but not near the end.

I've read perspective made easy, design and invention, figure drawing for all it's worth, anatomy for sculptors and color and light.

Some people have told me to work on rendering and feeling the form but I'm not sure how to improve on that.

Any other advice for improving would very much be appreciated like books and videos.

Okay you're already doing God's work in my eyes. It's also fairly well rendered. Nice

The main issue you have atm is that your forms aren't being conveyed properly. I know you've read Loomis, but he makes it an important point to really measure and block out the figure you're drawing before you even distinguish it with features and color. I'd suggest trying to make the limbs and body masses simpler solid forms like rectangular and trapezoidal prisms so that their isn't any room left for the imagination to assume, "eh, looks correct enough." One other thing that I don't emphasize as much but would recommend here a lot are the natural positions that the human body and limbs can bend and extend to. No clue where you reference that. Google maybe. I think Loomis covers that a bit. The left foot on the girl next to Mikan wouldn't bend like that in real life, for example.

You won't have to block out things like that for every drawing either, it's more just to help your brain adjust to seeing the body in blocks as you keep drawing. However when drawing complicated/unfamiliar angles and poses, you'll likely have to block it out again. Simpler poses and angles can be plopped down through repetition and still look amazing if practiced enough.

Some of the drawings are actually pretty okay form wise though. Just keep at it, anon.

The only pieces I have that are really comparable I think, got back into drawing last october but everything from that month is unfinished sketches and floating animu heads.
For some reason I keep defaulting to this weird isometric perspective when I try and draw anything in a room. Maybe the hundreds of hours I've put into sims is getting to me.

Stop using crutches friend, you are very much stuck in a symbol drawing stage and only now started to break through slightly more into construction
You are using your style (which might look nice eventually) as a crutch, the dynamic pose you posted in 2021 will look a lot better once you grasp perspective and gesture better

It's funny. Those puddles were a last-minute addition. I was just going to do a dusty town square, but I decided it needed some kind of element of interest.

I take a lot of inspiration from animation backgrounds. That's probably why my work takes on a story-book like quality.

if you are not going to start focusing on proportions, you are going to remain at this stage for years

trust me bro, I was there

stop focusing on the final lines, and star doing more construction lines, and with those construction lines focus mainly on proportions. And the best pics for proportions and frontal and side views, with little perspective distortion. After you learn to break down a front view in its proportions, then come back to this kind of pics and break them down by proportions.

Drawing details and focusing on lines is only going to improve once you start focusing on proportions.

I have a stack of sketchbooks made in over 10 years (?), and I made more progress in half a year after focusing on construction of proportions, its not even funny. I see some construction lines, but both of us know you rush that stage. Make some drawings where the construction is the main focus.

I am just picking a few pictures I did near a year ago and now. By my count I made 214 drawings over the course of 2020. I think I made some progress but I didn't really improve in the ways I wanted to. I mostly got better at understanding how to use references. And I got better at things like starting with a bigger canvas so you can zoom way in and go really slowly to make smoother lines. It takes me way longer now than it did a year ago to finish something but a better end result is a better end result. I also think I am better at picking subject matter. I made one drawing a few weeks ago of a squid with tank treads playing chess and throwing a paper airplane. I just get ideas like crazy and I attribute that to 2 things. 1) I quit smoking weed. 2) I actually made lists of subject matter. I just went through the artists I follow and made lists of recurring things I like from their drawings. My anatomy is better but again I think that's only because I have better references and am better at using them.
