I always need to count heads, how do I improve?

Copy Bargue plates or if that seems too dull learn atleast what you are supposed to do with them and apply it to more interesting subjects. For example do a couple of plates and then copy figures from artists you admire using the things you learnt from the plates. Then you will start to internalise the proportions, or if you want realistic proportions just copy images that people use for figure drawing.
