IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

POST DRAWINGS YOU NEED HELP WITH!

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in picresize.com

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

Take your time, you can do it.

Mildly retarded question, but when everyone draws anatomy is the process to:
>Draw a quick thumbnail
>Draw a to scale thumbnail to check proportions/angles
>Draw the basic forms on like an egg-shape for ribcage, cones for arms/legs
>Draw the muscles on top of it
>Draw clothes on top
I do this process but at a certain point I have too many lines and it gets messy, and since I have large hands they can smudge easier, is there a better way I should go about this

>quick stick figure for pose and approximate proportions
>basic forms, fix proportions while i'm at it
>mark where clothes are with arrows outside the picture
>actually start drawing shit

and draw everything except the last one with a 2H pencil held with the weakest grip my soi latte hands are capable of, so it erases when you just look at it menacingly.

Or at least I did before going digital thinking I'd save a ton of money on colored pencils in the long run.

my main objective is to draw pedo loli girls in anime style, but im taking a break to dig in the human anatomy so i can do the stylization when i have a clear understanding of what is what. what i'm saying is that i personally think it's better to do the standard untill you get good so you can do different styles'n shit
>>5074624
>But this is how the forms and lines should generally look?
i can't assure that, anon. if you search in google you'll see a lot of different styles but i guess its a matter of time and anatomy/proportions understanding. i mean, in a 2 minutes gesture, something with simplified forms maintaing proportions and in a 5~10 minutes, introduce some major shapes of the muscles to give a more visible understanding

you can't really give feedback on something that basic. You're basically making stick figures, there's no real way to fuck this up. the guy seems to lean left and back instead of standing straight and the right leg seems wrong because both knees are at the same height, but that's the kind of stuff you're supposed to fix later one once you do the proper sketch.

here's a one I just did, you can clearly see where I messed up and how. Maybe you should take a look at the next chapter where they teach you basic proportions, try building a few shapes on your sketch and compare that to the picture.

How much can I improve from just trying to draw things from reference? I do enjoy learning about theory (gesture, rhythm, local value, etc) but I'd also like to just draw sometimes without thinking too much about it. My crit.
Your proportion and gesture are not there yet. The hip, knees, ankles and shoulders stand out the most. The face and horns do not adhere to the law of perspective.
Don't obsess with clean lines yet. Try using the default chalk brush (40% opacity/default sensitivity. It's my favorite)
Learn the "flow" by copying artists that you like.

hmm
you already do a bit of figure drawing and gesture right?
have you tried just doing a bunch of gesture drawing separately and then try to draw the forms on top of the gesture drawing?
or how about draw boxes/basic shapes for the human body when drawing the figure and try to get your sensitivity to it a bit better?
or try to draw limbs by themselves and drawing them from multiple angles over and over again and simplifying them into basic boxes or cylinders?
the biggest issue in art is that artists learn things different despite been given the same material/sources to study off from.
do you also abuse the wireframe method where you put cross contour lines over the body/limbs as well?
do you also tried tracing the forms of the human body or even draw the gesture on top of the model?
im trying to come up as many answers and ways to improve so bare with me here.
do you also copy art you like as close or possible or just try to get multiple different artworks and combining what you like about them?

>Do you find a pose or image you like and copy it exactly?
That depends what you're trying to get off the image from, the style? the way they draw certain things that you like about it? (etc the hand, feet, clothing, faces)
but when trying to copy it close as possible ill put tons of angles on the reference and use a bit of construction to get as close as possible, for colors and value it really depends how long and how sensitive your ability to choose the right hue/value for the piece you're studying off from, a bit of color theory will carry your way.
>Do you alter it or move stuff around or rotate it? Yeah I do try that sometimes where I draw the same pose from another angle and see if I can get it close to the original, I also move stuff around but I end up trying to study the image more than mess around most of the time (like instead of adding clothes to it I just draw what my eyes see instead of messing around with proportions)
If you want a general idea how I do it, this what I typically do.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DaG-cBidCBw
>Most of the time I just copy it as well as I can. I sort of feel like it's cheating and I'm just becoming a printer.
just accept it that trying to draw from your head is something that you cannot do and even if you can do it somewhat okish it's still not up to your standard/expectations and you get mad over it and quit drawing for a week then comeback.
I also sometimes color pick the picture/study and when you're being conscious in what you're doing and analyzing how the hue changes you'll learn more than focusing studying/copying the image as close as possible from my experience.

Hey thanks for taking an interest anon.

He's meant to be nobility+mage. Proper and regal in public, a mischievous brat in private and a deeply depressed and troubled you man when alone.

I've considered making his doublet and shoulder cape more fancy with embroidery, tassels, more bows and what have you. I think that would be the best way to go about it without making him look too cluttered.

The two issues with that though is that I currently lake the skill for it and that I do want to use this character as a protag in a web comic. I don't want to make a super complicated design that I'll have to draw over and over again.

Not being a super fancy dandy does go against his character a bit but I can rationalise this with him spending most of the comic wearing his 'travel clothes', which is what I drew him in. But again even for the sake of practicality it doesn't feel right for him.

I don't know, maybe detailing the medallion on clasping his cape and giving him a fancy satchel-ed grimoire will be enough.

I think I'm just going to have to bite the bullet and learn to simplify something like pic related.

The problem isn't anatomy, it's form; aka you're not feeling the form. Anatomy just happens to be a specific set of forms that make up the human body, no amount of learning anatomy is going to help if you're issue is even more fundamental than that. Well, usually people can start to get an idea of forms while doing anatomy, but you're getting way too much interaction from /ic/ and that's muddying up your own learning process imo.
I've yet to see someone point it out in any of the threads, but you've just chicken scratched. Textbook definition chicken scratching on the guy. Even if you showed me only the clean line art, you wouldn't be able to convince me you could properly feel the form, but the chicken scratching just confirms beyond a reasonable doubt that the crux of your issues is form.
Don't ever make the excuse you can't 'think in 3D' no matter how tempting it may be, because if you can see other peoples art in 3D then you are more than capable of 'thinking' in it. No one begins drawing by thinking in 3D, it's learnt. Draw forms as see through if need be.
But regardless of whether or not form is truly the problem, as you get so much feedback that I'm bound to be contradicting someone else, you need to get off of /ic/. You're going to grind down your own mental well being by getting the same generalized set of advice over and over again. You need a couple months by yourself to actually just experiment and play around so you can digest everything properly. Take a few days off of drawing entirely to just let your brain sort things out if you really need to. You are going to do things wrong many, many more times than correct. This is natural; it's what it means to experiment. You try and try again, changing up a few things each time and seeing how it ends up affecting the drawing.
Lastly, remember that most advice you get is garbage, I'm not necessarily an exception either, and that you need to take everything with a grain of salt. Godspeed.

short answer, a stylized face is a simplified version of the real one so of course it is.

Long answer, you have a part of your brain dedicated to telling if something you're looking at is a human face, and whose face it is if it's one. this red motherfucker makes you immediately notice when something is even slightly wrong with a face and is the bane of trans people, /beg/ and sex doll manufacturers. the fun thing is, it doesn't kick in on more stylized faces : think of some parts of anime style like side mouths or giant moe eyes. If you applied anime rules to real faces, the result would instinctively make you want to kill it as your brain would tell you that's actually some sort of giant snake trying to get close enough to attack you.

or furries : they're notorious for being way more lenient about portraits than regular people are, because we haven't evolved brains telling us our dog's nose is pointing the wrong way or his teeth are in the wrong order when he's voring us.

"small things as a background" is usually a good idea, you just never draw them all. Make a vague area, draw a dozen and break another dozen into vague shapes that suggest they're here. That even gets you the advantage of suggesting there's way more stuff than what you drew.

that's how people draw junkyards, fruit market stalls or even basic piles of gold or rocks. Don Rosa is a fucking autist and draws every single coin in Scrooge's bin to flex on people, but most people do this draw some gray mass, tweak the colors to create volume and only then start drawing random shit on it to imply the previous gray thing is exclusively made out of it.

How do you force yourself to draw?
I don't enjoy drawing because all of my drawings end up looking like shit, I know I need to keep drawing to improve but I just have no motivation, I want to draw but at the same time I have no motivation to do so

I doubt it's a problem of being demotivated, instead it's more about you being afraid of failing. Muster up the courage and face your shitty drawings head on.

never force yourself, if you do you end up hating it even more, start small and look at a lot of reference images, practice seperate limbs or small parts or whatever you wanna draw.

First portrait i've ever painted! Until now I was kinda stuck with drawing on paper because I didn't know how to use photoshop. Done this to see if I was still stuck with symbol drawing syndrome, and it seems like i'm not. So now I just practice until my arms fall off or is there anything in particular I should do?
Also, how the fuck does one do eyebrows?
