For such a ripped guy his deltoids are too small and not long enough on our right side. Biceps are the wrong shape. Pecs don't appear to be attached to the humerous like they should. Inside muscles of the forearm should attach above the elbow.
His waist is also thin but thats fine if you want that comic book style. Although it's a bit warped because the perspective is off.

David Finch just released a nice video on cross hatching. It's on Proko's youtube channel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bNjkPMsbvTs

Your stuff looks really aesthetic to me. Some of the stylization makes it look like you're bad at drawing, like with the boy's head sliding off his neck, and the funky hands (I'd bring out the bony landmarks in the hands more). If anything, just make your stuff more pointed and angular. Focus on rhythm and letting things flow into each other more too. pic related is a good example of how things can be angular and still flow, it kinda has a smilar style to what you're going for so idk.

you need to put a focal point (It's where your eyes will land first/focus of the piece)
maybe try putting the couple in the front and the dudes in the table to be in the back ground, because at the moment my eyes are all over the place trying to look for something. to focus on.

Portrait-goathorn-valuestudy guy here, thanks for the response.
Hair is definitely a weakness of mine and i've been looking at steve huston's head drawing course and sinix videos on hair so I think I have enough to work with on that for now.
I think the bigger issue for me are shapes and trying to get away from line-dependancy since I'm kinda lost regarding that, If anyone has some Input/ resources on how to approach that I'd be grateful.

I found this vid useful for learning more about values and shapes.

I'd recommend using the biggest brush you can feasibly use and stick to 3 colours for value studies. Slowly make the brush smaller as it becomes too hard to make the changes you want to, but like work on the whole thing as a thumbnail, not focusing on any one area. It'll force you to focus on the shapes to convey the image

tiles on the floor are not the same size and the perspective looks wrong because of its irregular diminishing size. might be better to use a perfect grid or the like

I don't understand why the centermost guy would turn like that to see the monster(?). He can just turn his head to his left (from normal sitting position) instead of turning 270deg to the right and bringing his right leg over the chair?? doesn't seem thought out very well

story is not immediately clear because of composition. the main guy is too far from the center imo. you can probably cut or compress everything on the left since it's all just black anyways. but the camera shot itself just doesn't illustrate the scenario well, you should read Framed Ink if you haven't already

>> No.5068301

>>5068274
Got it, thanks anon!
Most of the reason that I have that 270 degree turn is so that he kicks his leg over and grabs his sword so he can jump into action, it's a bit melodramatic, but I felt like that better conveyed a chaotic mood for the scene.

I do agree that the left side should be compressed, but I think centering my character would throw off the eyeflow a little wouldn't it? I structured it so he's the first read and the monster is the second instead of focusing on the main character alone.

I couldn't agree more that I should have placed a grid down before doing the perspective, I just laid in my vanishing points and made my lines converge there.

>> No.5068346

>>5068301
ah I would think that putting him closer to center/symmetry would make him feel more stable in the composition and unphased by the ensuing chaos around him. also desu he was not the first read for me

Do not center him, it’s currently doing rule of thirds which is good. Rotate image so that the angle of the floor is opposite and the image is 'sliding' towards the sitting king, make the guy in the turned completely towards the monster with his hand grabbing his sword handle and his other hand grabbing his scabbard to steady it, and also the guy middle left needs a more chaotic pose to contrast the sitting king

2 - The forms here aren't reading well either. The values are too dark. I did a double-take at first because it looks like she's standing in an empty sandbox.

3 - While you may have intended to make this guy a directional marker, it looks like he's staring at the midget guy on the table and not at the beast in the doorway. I suggest you make him face the table like the guy in area 4 and turn his head towards the beast or just delete him altogether and move the innkeeper to the head of the table.

4 - His body is weird. That much roundness at the top of his back suggests he doesn't have a neck and the lower region of his back is completely square and unnatural.

Since she looks fairly athletic that meat you're trying to add is I think first the serratus muscle, and then I think the lat and some other muscle stack on top of it like layers. So it right now it looks a bit flat. I think it's really the lat insert that needs to be a bit bigger. and that line is melding into the serratus a bit much so it isn't popping out.

for the previous drawing I figured it out by imposing over it. the broom is going through her pelvis. she's not reaching out far enough to grab the broom after you move it forward enough to the point where she would be straddling it and not impaled by it. As for the right arm the insert was messed up a bit and is smooshed towards the medial line.

The stuff in the back right needs to be taller and bigger I think as well. In general the perspective is still mega fucked, and you will need to do a good amount of painting to make it readable.

agree with this. the bench (and presumably the table as well) on the right is longer than the one on the left. too many elements are inconsistent/out of scale intentionally or otherwise.
I think for this illustration, after choosing your thumbnail you should have established the setting in orthographic top/side views to get the scale of the environment, then project it in space. I'd even say using a quick 3d prototype could have saved you a lot of trouble. it's easy to spot uncanny shit in familiar man-made setting like this- even getting the size of a cup handle or ladle wrong can start to become uncanny, unlike some obscure mech or natural structure where you can get away with blowing up proportions etc. you should take the time to plan your props in advance and have better approximation of size (in general but more so for indoor settings)

Thumbnail almost looks completely black. Nobody will see the dark mood if the thumbnail barely shows anything. They wont click on it. I used an overlay layer at 100% with a white/yellow color which you can see on the right. Also adjusted brightness/contrast/saturation levels a little. Decide on where the light is coming from and make a separation between light and dark with some cast shadows and blended falloffs. You can add in some bounce light after you get that set up like i did on her arm.

you need at least some light to make something look dark, yours is just all dark which desaturates it, look at the thumbnail you posted you cant tell what's going on, you barely can when the image is expanded. ok, but I didn’t want to have a standard strong directional light, I wanted a low light setting
If I failed, that’s fine, but then I’d appreciate solutions to how to succeed in what I intended, not to completely change the goal of the image
a very strong directional light is not what I want, I was thinking more like a cave setting with a very weak light coming in from the outside and bouncing off the walls or something like that
the value range could probably use some stretching, but by no means would I ever use a full value range for something like this, it seems artificial

>> No.5072856

>>5072847
If you're doing it just for you then do what you want. If you're doing it to show to others then you need to step into their shoes and see it from the perspective of someone who's seeing it for the first time. It won't matter that you tried to make it dark and moody if they don't even click the thumbnail because they only see a black rectangle. The only way to improve what you have is to add more light. That's the simplest answer. Make there be torches in the cave or some opening that's allowing sunlight or moonlight in or have the monster have glowing appendages. What matters is making the image readable and in its current near black state it isn't.

its very hard to read so far. im not the biggest fan of the composition but thats fine since its not a professional piece. the main problem here is the perspective of the two figures in the front. it really feels like they are on two separate layers of floors. i dont know if its because of what you referenced or what but you really gotta practice placing the feet on the ground plane properly because otherwise it is pretty telling that you are unsure of what youre doing. rather convenient that most of the figures in this painting are NOT showing their feet. good job tho. lots of room for improvement too.

The angle of her left arm feels off, her shoulder is just gone there's no tension showing her arm is bent in the neck area. Well here is where you fucked up.

You've changed the angle of her head because, in the reference image, her hairline is near the top. This is what gives her the fullness to her head size.

Your gal is looking downwards but you haven't moved her chin down to compensate for this head nod. Most of her hair is the top of her head.

I don't know what plumb lines are for, but you need to pay more attention to this sort of thing.

I don't want to go into other shit like her having uneven eyes, one eye looks lazy and is looking way the fuck off into the distance compared to the other one. First fix the size of the head so she doesn't have a giraffe's neck. Then we can take it from there.

I wouldn't compare it to lacrimal because of the alignment thing either. My redline of your hairline was off as a result, since you've angled her head that way also and as a result it throws that comparison as well.

I do hope you see now that the head is too small compared to your ref. Again, unless it's some effect you're going for, it makes her (your) neck feel too long for her head size.

The alternative is start to erase the back of her neck until it's slimmer. That might help the situation, but it might also cause more troubles.

I really like this. The costume design is great, the facial expression is great. I like the blocky aesthetic because it suits his character well.

Things that could be improved, if you choose to

1) Foot size needs to be increased.
2) Perspective is a tad exaggerated. There is no way that his left (our right) arm that thick compared to his right arm. Your vanishing point is somewhere to the right but not everything seems to be receding equally.
3) Legs could be slightly longer over all but I don't know if you want to end up having to adjust the perspective for all of it to compensate. Looking at the thumbnail, his legs feel short. The femur to the two leg bones feels fine, but compared to the upper torso they are not long enough.

Are you going to proceed to paint him or keep it as is?

>> No.5085466

Thanks for crit, I'm gonna paint him sometime in the future, right now I try to finish all of my old sketches before the end of the year. Left arm is supposed to be more armored than the right, as for legs length - I've drawn them short bcs I wanted to emphasize upper body strength and chimp like posture/long hands, I dunno how to say it - bulkiness, but with kind of agility.
