The values you chose are pretty good, I think your main problem is your drawing ability. While your proportions and general shapes are pretty nice, you're not seeing completely solid form. I recommend getting Vilppu's Drawing Manual lectures and working on his "Modelling Tone" chapter. It'll force you to see planes, solid form, overlap, perspective, secondary forms, tertialry forms, and everything necessary to solid drawing. Line drawing alone will not teach you how to draw well, you really need to start seeing planes, and that's best trained by realistic rendering.

I have kind of a dummy question more suited for people who like manga
So for line weight, do mangaka keep the minimum and maximum brush size generally close together all the time or is this a thing thats changed often? Sometimes it feels like the brush I try to use is way too small so I crank it up, then sometimes its a bit too big, and it also needs some leeway for tapering

Take in mind 600 dpi for B&W and 350 dpi for color are technically just a starting point, but the vast majority of mangaka choose to stay at that minimum, since it makes drawing far more manageable on drawing apps, not to mention the relatively small file sizes.

Another tip: Frame distances for manga panels are usually 5mm vertical, 2mm horizontal for maximum readability. You can choose whatever size you want as long as the vertical distance is greater than the horizontal.
On Clip Studio this is pretty easy, as you can just make a new Frame Border Folder and then just divide the frames.

Yes.
A4 is the typical douinshi manuscript size, since the A4 original gets cropped to B5 size and then resized to A5 for publication.
By the way, A4 is for the uncropped original and B5 is for the cropped version. Some artists prefer to skip straight to B5 since that's the final size for the og page, but that's risky since the cutting process for printing is imprecise, so they tend to avoid drawing detail outside the panel frames.

Sometimes it's hard to tell when we're looking at print scans (and when you save compressed shitty aggregate site images...) but I think he draws trad. A lot of his pages look like they're just drawn with millipen or maru pen, but those aren't hard to reproduce digitally. The main reason I think he draws trad is the minimal use of tones.

They're a legitimate publisher though, yes. They're primarily known for older, mid-2000's "anime" style comics. Guess they've been running out of material lately.

If you were writing a manga from the perspective of it turning into a professional success (not really my goal nor do I think it's realistic, just asking for the insight), how do you determine how long the series should be? Is there any kind of industry standard for this kind of thing? I feel like a retard trying to express myself here, but basically when looking up "web comic" I get really trash Western stuff and nothing ressembling what I assume we envision as work of art.

What gets me to ask is me wondering about what path my art should take. I've been undecided between the idea of simply making illustrations and focusing on my blog and the idea of working on my own "manga project", which would naturally involve a deeper personal involvement.
The thing is I'm not sure I'd want to aim to get my stuff to be actually printed (if it happens in the future cool but that's it), so I've been playing with the scope and ended up thinking about some sort of "ongoing online manga".

Is no one doing anything like this? Outside of Japan, Pixiv, etc that is. I'd imagine being supported on Patreon for making your own manga to be some kind of common and realisable dream, wouldn't it?

Depending on how limited you are with time, you could try doing both. Keep commissions open (but close them before you get swamped), work on commissions for a set amount of time each day and your comic for the rest of the time. Or reverse that, work on the comic for a set time and commissions the rest of the time.
This arguably doesn't work if you only have a couple of hours to draw in a day though. But then, being extremely limited in time can teach you to not fuck around when you do have time, so maybe it's still worth taking that approach even when you're limited.

I think those are trigger finger braces, for tendonitis. Those are way better than the cheap ones you get on amazon because it keeps your finger slightly bent. When I wore my trigger finger brace for like a week, it kept my finger perfectly straight, causing me to get something called a "swan-neck" deformity, where the finger locks straight because of the tendons snapping past the bones

I think, if anything, storyboards are probably the biggest difference between an amateur or a newbie and a pro/veteran. Us amateurs tend to skip or get lazy in the manuscript phase which leads to major problems in the finished work that we don't notice until we're done, or don't notice at all. What we should be doing is basically thumbnailing the whole thing in a storyboard, thinking hard about it, anylizing it, trying to find anything we can improve, fix those in the storyboard and only then actually start working on finished pages.
It's too easy to skip that step if you're impatient or new, but it goes a looong way in creating a readable work.

I was actually going to, but I realize I needed a medium that can be released with a relatively high frequency of updates. Weekly or biweekly or even monthly updates will work a lot better than several months between version updates or additions to a VN. Plus a VN needs to be basically scripted in full then completely revised before you can even think about finishing anything else about it, so most of the work is frontloaded. By the time you have a working demo you're probably at least a year into actively working on the project. It's just not suitable unless you have funds already.

Does anyone in this thread know of any schools or lessons online that teach like a lineart heavy style? I have a decent amount of money to burn, and I want to spend it on lessons. I was thinking of doing the Watts Atelier school for a few months, but I feel like their very painterly approach will still leave me guessing when it comes to making manga and paneling out stories, even though it will drastically improve my anatomy and value rendering.

Spend more time and make the hatching and detail work on the larger panels more fine. Having the same size of hatching on both close ups and long shots ruin the sense of scale and distance and make it hard to stay immersed.

My advice would be to straighten the panels a bit and try to compose your pictures using using rule of thirds. Also not a fan of the balloons getting so close to the edge.

Weeeeell, not really. There's differences in the specific techniques used. Just look at the difference between japanese-style hatching and american-style hatching. They're completely different approaches. Americans tend to use brushes to create bold, thick, clean lines, meanwhile when a mangaka busts out his brushes it's to do something messy and rough. Japanese tend to (but don't always, just a trend) design with clarity as the priority whereas Americans tend to design with coolness and visual wow-factor as the priority.

Anons I have kind of a brainlet question, but how do you make screentones look good on CSP? I just can't figure out the proper densities and sizes, and it gets distorted when I zoom in and out, which doesn't happen to other artists that also only use CSP for it and I can't understand where I'm going wrong. It's good because it's more casual that a typical dramatic kiss. Good job on that. Huh? The only thing that gives it away is that it's left-to-right. The stylization is pretty much close enough as to be indiscernable from a typical easterner's doujin.

If the honorifics are never really relevant then they should be localized/left out, but if there's any play with them that doesn't really translate (like, say, a character dropping the -chan to signify their relationship growing and that is treated as the evidence of that growth, something a native audience would probably just inherently understand without the work pointing it out) then leave it in and maybe include a translator note at the end or something to explain.
Generally dropping the cultural stuff is to make it more palatable the wider audience, though. It may not bother /a/ users, but a normalfag reader would probably just be confused and less likely to read it. There are no rules in writing. The only things people care about are interesting characters in entertaining situations. For every "rule" someone tries to make there are a dozen well loved stories that break that rule. Where is the save the cat moment in O' Brother Where art Thou? Who has a character arc in Ghostbusters? Where is the three act structure in Lawrence of Arabia? I could go on all day.

The fact is most writers don't really know what the fuck they are doing, and these rules kind of put a structure around literal infinity and I cant agree. Have good stories been told using techniques in Save the Cat? Sure. Can you make a boring story more interesting by following these rules? Why not? But so many other people are following these very popular rules that everything is becoming stale. I think beginning writers should look at their favorite stories, figure out the reason they like them so much, and recreate that feeling in their own work.

nta, but there are very much rules to writing, but its not the 3-act structure or anything. Well, they're not such rules, as they are tools, things that you have to do or your stories will suffer. Scenes should nearly always have a turning point and a conclusion (a punchline, so to speak, a point of change) or they might fall-flat. Characters should have desires and conflicts (but not necessarily full on fist-fights, conflict just means interruptions, whatever those might be) The setting should be authentic and believable. Themes are important too in certain stories (but I also don't mean that stories should be philosophical debates.)

Go read Robert McKee and really think about what he says, he might open your eyes a lot. He doesn't teach a strict 3 act strucutre. Not all characters have to have a character arc. No the heroes journey is not a required thing. His teachings are much more organic and liberal than that. I also recommend reading Araki's book, its basically a condensed version of McKee.

I've read two of Mckee's books, my opinions are well researched. I don't think that having structure is bad. I just don't think that there are any hard and fast rules to making an entertaining story. I believe you. As long as you have a system that allows you to create enjoyable stories that both you and other people like, it doesn't matter how you write. But just so you know, I had to read McKee over 10 times over a span of 4 years to begin to understand him (along with reading every other popular screenwriting bok) It's very very difficult to understand why the stuff he writes is true, but once you understand it you realize that stories could not be written any other way. After that, it still takes a ton of practice to learn the depth and complexity of story-structure. I'm not saying I'm a good writer either, but with every story I finish, I improve the next one with a greater understanding of the stuff McKee lays out in his book.

But at the end of the day, you are still right. If you don't write with all your heart and all your soul, your story will still absolutely fail. I've written too many stories as "exercises" that I didn't care about which I ended up trashing. But the principles of drawing and perspective are there to make your vision come true and to resonate with other people, and I believe that's the same with storytelling.

This. Making black and white comics with screentone is much much much much harder than making it with color. Coloring is easy and adds a lot of punch to your drawings, and you don't have to pay attention to line-weights and shading with hatching and textural patterns. After a year of making comics I'm finally learning enough about line-weights to make my ink drawings look good without any tone or color.

but also, don’t marry yourself to your ideas. Especially during the conceptual phase. Your first ideas are also going to be the most generic. It’s only once you start digging deeper that the true uniqueness shines. The plot is just the plot, and should be adapted to suit the needs of the character arc. Forget the plot. What is your story ACTUALLY about?

Also, look for other sources of inspiration, as many as you can. The further you stray from other manga and pop culture the better. You can also mix concepts, for example: “it’s like Back to the Future BUT it’s hotblooded and hyper masculine and features a Tokusatsu hero trying to change the future by defeating the villain and his robot generals.” I basically mixed BttF with TTGL with Kamen Rider with MegaMan. This alone works as a concept to get the ball rolling on original ideas that stem from here. Hell, the concept is so vague and flexible, anyone here could take it, and it would still be very different in execution. Because it’s just the plot and isn’t mentioning the character journey.

Try it with your concept:

Learn to steal like an artist. Originality is a meme. Yes.

Sakamoto uses sketches too. Layer properties can be changed freely. The ink layer may be monochrome, and the sketch layer may be grayscale or color. We're looking at his ink settings in that image though, not his sketch.

That said, a sketch's purpose is to be a rough that can be drawn over cleanly later. In digital that can be achieved just with changing a layer's opacity, so it's not like it matters whether you're sketching in monochrome or not.

Wild Words is usually the choice of font for translated manga, but I would actually recommend you to use CCLadronn instead since it's more stylish.
Also, it is the font used to translate Araki's Rohan manga in french.
