IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

POST DRAWINGS YOU NEED HELP WITH!

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in picresize.com

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

Take your time, you can do it.

I drew some weird shit early today, but next time ill stick to normal humans drawings and not shortstacks
Im hoping that over time I can get my copies to be more precise. I know the top ones breasts are too small and the torso is angled differently then in the ref.
I watched the gesture drawing demo by Vlippu and tried to replicate the "feeling the form 3 hand gesture" thing he talked about but I think I need to lower the brush opacity or it just looks like chicken scratch.
Like I said im hoping with mileage it'll improve. I still suck for sure

You need to find soulful art and study it. And also compare it with soulless art. What does the former does right and latter wrong?
Soulful art provokes emotions. Think about what emotion you want viewer to feel. Sadness, nostalgia, cozy feelings, etc. Find art which gives you these emotions. Study why it gives them to you - color scheme, character poses/emotions, overall atmosphere/themes.
Just don't make art without purpose. Drawing yet another girl sitting on a bench doing nothing is soulless. Drawing a girl sitting at a train station anxiously looking at the clock as if waiting for someone who might not arrive - that can become soulful if executed good enough.

if you study real anatomically correct drawings yeah, stylized pics like the one you posted will make you draw in that same style, also it's gonna be hard to understand the complex stuff like how muscles morf and joints work assuming you go that route of learning. Your method is not that bad but in case you want to learn anatomy or just the pics you posted you need to go deep in the forms so you don't let anything to your imagination because when you simplify the forms too much your brain will fill the small details with symbol drawing, i know that's not a finished drawing but just wanted to metion it here's an example, but i think you are ready just be more uhhh detailed in your studies

It will help, but make sure you also use correct posture and hold the pen correctly. Draw quickly, but don't rush yourself faster than you can percieve your reference. Line exercises and even tracing will also help build your confidence. Keep some steady exercises for 3 months or so and you won't need chicken scratch anymore.

Also, excellent self-critiquing. Heads are hard as hell to get right, and you're getting close to nailing most of the shapes despite the messy linework.

Chicken scratching is very distinct; drawing a stroke that represents a plane in multiple shorter strokes instead of one longer one. Restating lines is NOT chicken scratching. The only way to get more confident lines in their case is to become more confident in their forms, aka literally just mileage.

So lets say I have a basic grasp of the fundies, and I've finally gotten good enough to study anatomy.
But, my end "goal" would be to say, draw cartoons/coomart/anime/fanart etc etc (Anything not realistic)
How deep should I go into my anatomical studies of realistic anatomy? Whats the point that I say "I dont need to go this far"? Or is there no such point and I just do full realism till I "get it" and then stylize.

I'd say you just need to learn a simplified skeleton & all the major muscle masses and where they attach on the skeleton. Knowing where subcutaneous fat accumulates is also good. The later. Of course mix up studies with pieces of your own.
I'll say it though, we're not med students, get basic anatomy down but strictly anatomy isn't REALLY the important part... there's a certain "SOUL" you acquire when drawing realistic people (after you know the basics).
This guy here is an example of what to look forward. His realistic knowledge shows through his anime drawings because he absorbed many unconscious stuff like gravity and weight and clothing on a person and movement etc.. you acquire these when drawing realistically accurate people.
So yes, it's a "till you get it" thing and then you stylize.

I mean it's not one to one accurate but I think I got the feel of it (mine is the left of course). I worked too small, it turned out kind of blurry because I couldn't really get in to do the details. Also I should have used multiple layers, getting the gaps in the hair to look sharp would have been easy if I had.
Though really I don't know how helpful this kind of thing actually is. I think it helped me figure out this sort of rendering a little more I guess.

Hello /beg/
So I started drawing casually into lockdown. Only had fun with a pencil by loomis to read, so I started doing the exercises in there every other day.
I'm poor as fuck, so for christmas I might treat myself to some drawing pens or colour pencils if I have any sort of potential.
Would like some critique. Lockdown is lifted tommorow and I doubt we'll get it for a third time, so I just wondered if I had any sort of improvement from July.
Also, long time lurker, why is Loomis a meme? was a bit disappointed to find out the book I started using was an /ic/ meme for being bad.

If you memorized your proportions your drawing would be much better. Eyes should be one eye width apart and the mouth should be closer to the nose than the chin

also IMO color pencils are a scam they're super time consuming and I haven't seen much art made with them that looks nice. Ive only really only seen them used for photorealism.

You are doing super well my man. Progress comes slowly sometimes and sometimes it comes in bursts. Don't worry too much about about it since it comes naturally with mileage even if you yourself don't notice it.

From looking at your image it seems like you draw really small, maybe it's just the paper or something? Try to keep your heads something like 8 cm tall at least if you are doing a portrait. More room to work on so detail becomes easier to add.

I really like how the nose bridge shadows/lines disappears when you simplify the shapes. Try to keep this in mind when you draw the other features of the face too.

As someone else said, measure more when doing portraits.

It's good you shouldn't be drawing like a engineer in my opinion. When i tell you to measure i don't mean with a ruler or something. Use your eyes to see the distance between features in relationship with each other, ignore the subject and try to see it as a 2d map. Don't just use one point of reference when measuring, use many. What's the distance between the nose and the eye, what's the distance between the nose and the cheek, what's the distance between the nose and the mouth. How long is the nose in comparison with, lets say the forehead, and so on.

It's harder to do this type of thing from real life then it is from a image but i personally believe that doing it from real life teaches you more.

Good luck friend

Sorry, haven't got anything that specific.
You could try researching by yourself or just draw until you get it right.
Think line economy and line-weight.
Start by making borders slightly thicker than the rest and then experiment at your leisure.
Avoid shading/hatching until you're sure and confident of what you're about to do.
Avoid going wild with the pen and rushing anything.
Such work as anon's could be considered a good sketch but it has value only to the artist since he knows what he "meant".
pic related is somewhat of an example
try to look for works that resemble your drawings and reverse engineer them, you'll learn better.
