My art looks perfectly fine besides the colors. I am not willing to post my art here for bad publicity and because anyone's opinions on stylization are often unhelpful. Usually people on /ic/ are more helpful with fundamental things like anatomy or colors.

Pic related for instance used a color palette, but I am bad at knowing how to put things next to each eachother and make them "pop" properly without clashing... maybe it just takes more practice but it feels like I struggle at properly pulling it off without making colors either get too ,uddy or clash too much tornado darks that I shouldn't need to

I tried my hand at this anon, sorry if you don't like the palette I went with. Some general things to note:
1) With cute, simple-ish designs, pay attention to your shapes and lines. For instance, you don't have to line the tiny hearts in the eyes, the star buttons, and the paw pads, because it just creates clutter for the eye. Simple, flat shapes read better for those! Also, the overlapping eyebrows is also a bit of a clutter to look at for me personally, so I would avoid it, but I get that it's a style thing.

2) Your colors are a bit muddy, like the yellow outline and the pinks you chose. I think overall you need some more saturation to make your colors pop, and you need more contrast (they look a bit samey at the moment, which doesn't read well from afar/thumbnails.
Judging from your style and reference, I'm assuming you might make merch? You should push your saturations otherwise they turn out even muddier when you print them. Also, /cgl/ has a good artist alley thread!

3) Too many of the same motifs (ribbons/bows) in the same image, and clashing patterns (polka dot, gingham, the heart pattern bg) too many of these together reads a bit messy in my opinion.

4) If you're going to make an outline of the character, it's better to either have a consistent stroke applied or block interesting shapes out to separate your character from the flat bg.

I think this is really cute and I can see the appeal! I think mainly I would focus on increasing the contrast and avoiding picking muddy colors (go further with the saturation scale!), and work on simplifying shapes + make interesting shape designs. Hope this helps, anon!

Thanks for the in-depth response and even a paintover!
>1
I am really bad at picking what not to line but that makes a lot of sense. I guess that knowledge of what details don't need lines will come with practice so I need to experiment with it to understand

>2
Yeahhhh. Color palettes are not my specialty.
I made a palette myself yesterday and maybe I will try and saturate it a bit more! I can see the muddiness you mentioned in my pic compared to yours. I don't make merch atm but that is my goal! So I am trying to work on making my characters pop and be expressive and easy to read.

>3 Too many of the same motifs (ribbons/bows) in the same image, and clashing patterns (polka dot, gingham, the heart pattern bg) too many of these together reads a bit messy in my opinion.
Actually this was my take on an existing Sanrio character named Mewkledreamy, she is my favorite and I thought she'd be good for a quick example! Pic related is the pic I reffed the outfit from
I am pretty bad with patterns and where to apply them though. I am assuming a max of 2 patterns per image is okay? I probably pushed it with the heart polka dots. I like the simple white design you did to accent the picture in your paintover

>4
Okay noted! I think the blocking you did looks nice so I will try that.

Any advice on simplifying shapes? I definitely want to learn to simplify things better because it can look really good if done right. I used to be a serial turd-polisher and am breaking my habits.

Thanks again anon! This was really helpful and I will apply what you told me

>>5026030
Ahhh sorry I didn't know it was an existing character. The clashing/too many patterns in the same design is a personal opinion, by the way! It's hard to explain these things because while it looks ok in the official art, it was a bit too much in yours, I think it could be because the polka dots were too big. Also it's not a hard and fast rule to have x amount of patterns per image, eventually you just get a feel for what looks good and what works vs. what doesn't!

As for advice on simplifying shapes, you can try doing a few pieces without lineart, one of those lineless art styles. I think it would good for learning!

Yes I get what you mean. Official art can manage to balance difficult things somehow that can be difficult to properly incorporate.
Lineless art styles are scary for me but I could try! I guess it would be good for shapes

Thanks very much helpful anon! I tried a couple things you said and it helped my picture out. I will try bg textures next like how you used the tiny dots in your pic.

>No loli pls
I'd just like to point out that children (particularly infants) are entirely what our brains are hardwired to find cute. Cute things are things that our brain connects to babies, usually subconsciously. Most attempts at cuteness involve heavy neoteny, and most things you might connect to as "cute" are things that remind's one of a child-like personality or physicality.
Note that this is not inherently sexual.

If you want to make a comic, then start ASAP. You're already beyond the skill level where your artwork would be jank, so you have absolutely no excuses now. Just remember that comics are so much work that you are much, much better off focusing on SPEED and workflow instead of beautiful drawings.
Do it now because you may never if you don't.

>Also why shade the top of the eye? Ive seen ppl do that a lot but doesnt that make the eyeball look concave?
It's meant to be shadows cast from the eyelashes, not brow. They're present IRL too just very subtle. Remember that the eyeball is convex so the middle of the eye technically sticks out further than the top of the eye, meaning the part just under the lashes is the most recessed part of the visible eye.

I thought it was something like this. This stuff gets confusing with stylized eyes especially when you dont have much experience with a realistic face.

I have the opposite problem. I like cute best, more or less it's all I'd care to draw. But my mood often dictates something otherwise. I suppose it's the same for anything. For this I am glad I'm not tied to it as a job though.

No, this would just turn into a 99% loli thread. These people just need to go to their fucking containment threads and let us discuss cute design in peace.
If someone wants to post anything "loli" it should have multiple style and design elements to it that are not sexual like pic related.

I've actually never liked this art style? what do you guys see that's so appealing about it? They look like bootlegged versions.
>>5029483
I will never understand the appeal of babies and kids, sure they are soft if you pet them on the head, you realize how fragile they are and your protective instincts kicks in, but I still don't find them cute like I do cute fluffy animals.

Bootleged version of the shoujo style itself, it's just looks cheap and dead, but it's just a personal opinion of mine and nothing people should pay attention to, I understand I belong to the minority feeling like this towards the style.

1.36mb of cute. The bg feels cool but it might just be because it's against the board color.
If you want to push warm, have a look at how things look in fire/candle light. Like those greens could be pushed to a golden olive color.
