if I follow the watts atelier online course and treat it as strictly as studying at a real establishment, how much am I actually missing out on compared to actually paying and attending somewhere in person?

you're missing out on networking ... probably the single most important aspect of going to an art school ('but what about the technical skills', lol are you serious? you can get that shit at a community college)

you'll have no clout when people ask where you studied.

you also won't have 50k in student debt ... but if that amount of money is an 'issue' for you i got news for you son ...
