I was about to go on a really long rant but it got TOO long and I don't wanna bother you with that, so I'd just say to look it up on google! "Henry Darger mental health" if you look it up in a few different wordings, you'll get some really interesting results - though they're mostly speculative, since he was such a private person.

Youre right though, his childhood and the abuse and neglect he suffered definitely fed into his mental state. Again, I cant diagnose him or anything but i've seen people talk about him maybe having developed multiple personalities as a child, or that he might have had schizophrenia, or even just tourettes and an eccentric personality or something. His neighbours did recall him having conversations with himself in multiple voices, though. And he had some wild religious experiences that drastically affected his work and vice versa.

He had a favourite reference image of a little girl who died somehow (it was reported in a newspaper and he clipped it), and when he lost it; he went on this obsessive search for another copy, apparently he denounced God when he couldnt find it and he fell into a fucking extreme depression... the way his mind worked fascinates me.

I actually really need to do a lot of re-reading on him soon for some college projects, so don't take my word for it - it's worth reading up on yourself, he's that interesting. Here's one source I had bookmarked on his mental health.
