You should be starting the art book illustrations, periodt.
Everyone that signed up should really try to make at least one illustration by next month to build momentum.
Awetos already mentioned, you really should be making roughly two illustrations per month, with a couple making 3 in 1 month.

Your first illustration is going to be your worst, you just have to try your best and not expect something crazily above your current skill level. Every piece of art you make is in preparation for the next one. You just have to learn to not treat every piece of art as if its your last. By all means, you should be trying hard to make an appealing illustration, but don't get side tracked by thinking it needs to be perfect. Once you feel like you are reworking things a bit too long, move on to the next step or move onto another drawing and come back to it.

I'm looking through the gallery for indigo and this users technical ability seems to fluctuate here and there, but barely any marginal improvement. However, I think it was poor taste to remove this persons streak. They might be going through some things and perhaps drawing the way they were for a few days was just meant to keep up the >habit< of putting the pencil in their hand on paper, which can already be a challenge in of itself. I've been there, too. On the flipside that is my speculation.

But seeing how their streak was over 100 I doubt they were shitposting. What is there to gain? Absolutely nothing but "cheating the system". There are rules in place to draw for a minimum of 30 minutes sure, but dad/las was meant to be a habit tracker. How you use it pass that point should be all on that user unless the user is deliberately trolling, which I don't believe indigo was doing. Again, poor choice on the dad admins.

Your whole argument of "indigo should keep her streak, despite blatantly breaking rules, because dad is a habit tracker" is retarded anyway. Here's why:
1. Banana decides what the site is about. Banana also decides what rules are. Suggesting that he should follow spirit of the law and not the letter of the law is retarded, when he personally decided for both.
2. If dad is a habit tracker, then even more so, such laziness should be punished. By allowing this kind of behaviour you're encouraging people to build a habit of putting in minimal effort and stagnating, not of actually working. If you really struggle with just "putting the pencil in their hand on paper", then you have some serious issues in your life that should be dealt with first, instead of posting your 10 second doodles online and expecting pats on the back for good work.
3. If it's just a habit tracker for you and you disagree with rules (like 30min rule), you're free to go somewhere else. Habitica comes to mind. Or you could just use a wall calendar. But since you came here and you insist on posting here, you should either follow rules, or face consequences. Asking for an exception is arrogant to the extreme.
4. And speaking of exceptions there were plenty of other dads that got their streaks reset for the same reason. Making an exception now would be unjust.

Upon further investigation you can clearly see more figure sticks drawn on the other side of the paper. They also indicated in their description 1 out of X drawn. It could be that perhaps they just didnt feel like submitting everything they do on your site or complaining it in photoshop as "proof" to the 5 henchmen at the top. Rather, it's easier to dump a wall of text and flex your webmaster muscles without proper investigation first. drawing first, simple and loose rough sketch, tighter overlay drawing, then flat color, flat simple shading, more shading, highlights, color overlays, work some parts until acceptable. All of these are on separate layers so I can play with blend modes and opacity.
That's pretty much it. I would add that drawing gestural, loose and structural is the more important part.

I think a lot of the /int/-and-up dada are capable of pretty good/great work, but because dad is "not a gallery" you're exposed to the doodles and practice they do in between big pieces, making their average skill level look worse than it actually is. Compare that with something like a social media gallery where they'd only show off their completed, best work.

Built-in tierlists seem highly subject to bias and uncomfy. People get shit on in the threads and I imagine it would carry over to some level of score-bombing on the site.
Plus, I imagine it would be more demotivating for many dads than anything. Artistic growth isn't linear, and most non-neet, non-pro artist dads are gonna have times where they produce less/lower quality art due to life circumstances. It would probably just demotivate them futher to see their scores drop when they're in a rough time in life.

I don't really like the idea of a built in scoring or tierlist system. That's not really what dad (or art in general) is/should be about.
Same with the proposed 'follow' system that some people have talked about. Right now, everyone shows up on the same page together when they submit their work. We're all given equal visibility and we all see each other's work. If a follow system is implemented where you'd have a 'feed' based on the users you follow, I feel like that sense of balance would fall apart and the intent of dad would become messy.

Two words: ELO rating.
Just make thunderdome fights more common. After a bunch of fights it's easy to calculate your rating. The more you fight the more precise your score will be because of it's self-correcting nature. Banana generously offered to program such thing if thunderdome fights will pick up.

It works basically like this: everyone has, lets say, 1000 points at the beginning. After a duel winner gains some points and loser loses some (how much exactly depends on difference of their ratings; winning against better opponents is worth more). Eventually ratings stabilize and clear tiers are made. Just for reference: difference of 200 points means that better dad is expected to win 76% of battels.

I'm planning to make a challenge about thunderdome battles to kickstart this whole thing (assuming a new tourney won't happen in the meantime). But first I have to get my shit together and stop dying every few days. And then challenge some people to see is it as fun as I hope and if others like it as well.

As a way of determining who made artwork that's appealing to the biggest number of dads? No. It's perfectly objective in this regard.

It's not perfect, but I think this approximation is very reasonable. Better artists will make more appealing art.

not the OP of that post but i want to say we should change the way we vote for the thunderdomes.

I think we should vote on all the thunderdome battles in a weekly manner so that way we can get all the votes at once, also maybe make the vote public (as in people in dad only, not a set of judges, it puts too much pressure on them).
and then after the weekly voting, you're assigned your ELO which will be on excel sheet kind of like what we have for LAS.

so we do that jazz then every 3 months, the top 3 people that have the most ELO get a role for like what a month ? and then ELOs get reset. I know it seems more short term, but it's kinda discouraging to newer DADs who wish to be on top. If you wanna make it more long term, then maybe 6 months we restart seasons.

Idk that's my idea. tell me what you guys think ?
