Heyall, now that I have free time I'm looking to try and get commissions. I have a few hundred followers and some art friends with some thousands of followers to help boost me a bit but I know at the point I'm at I need to be more proactive and find customers.

What are some good places to go looking? Or places to post my portfolio for others to find? I'm not interested in me paying for social media exposure.

I'm in the same boat, OP. I looked around on fiverr and saw there's a lot of shit artists making money off their weird stiffly drawn sex shit.

I'd like to know how they do it, I can almost see myself having zero luck and I'll feel like shit in comparison, to the shit artists who seem to get attention

If you can't build a social media presence, it probably means nobody is interested in your work. Check the dA work forum if you want the full "I need a job" experience. You just get approached by the worst people imaginable.
Get some followers first. They actually care about your work.

Yes and no.
OP may be less skilled than he thinks he is, at the same time social media isn't the same as it was even 5 years ago. The algorithms today are finely tuned and merciless towards anything that doesn't fit into the mold. There are only two options now: pander to whatever is trending or have near-godlike skills. Otherwise, there's virtually no chance for you to get exposure.
