This is a thread to discuss all kinds of digital drawing hardware: non-display graphics tablets, pen display tablets, portable tablets and more.

>What should I buy?
State your:
>Budget
>Location
>Type (display? non-display? portable?)
>Size (in inches)
>Other information
>Previous equipment

If you have any additional questions, ask them.

>Recommended tablets:

Intuos Pro 2013 - Great value, and the nibs won't wear out in 5 seconds like they do on the newer model.
Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite - Budget portable display tablet. Very solid drawing experience with Wacom EMR tech.
Used iPad Pro 2nd Gen 12.9" - Best option for a display tablet.
Used Cintiq 22HD - The only worthwhile large display tablet
Galaxy Tab S7+ - Good premium alternative to an iPad Pro

>Avoid:

XP+Pen, Huion, Gaomon and every other Chinese brand - Poor build quality, lackluster pens, bad tilt, horrible customer support and the displays are not calibrated. All Chinese brands are basically the same because they're all centralized. Also watch out, Chinese Companies are known to shill aggressively, even on 4chan.
Cintiq Pro - Terrible value. The drawing experience might be good, but you're paying way too much for an unreliable product. Dead pixels are frequent, as are black screens of death.
Microsoft Surface Pro - The N-Trig digitizer means you will always get wobbly lines.
Lenovo - Bad drawing performance.

Youd get used to the disconnect quite quickly. Your brains pretty good at the coordination, you already use a mouse with no issue whatsoever. If you want to get the most natural feel possible, youd want to get as little size difference between your display and tablet as possible so that a one inch stroke on your tablet = one inch line on your display. Its not vital and youd accustom to whatever size you get quickly, but if you're extremely used to traditional drawing thatd be the easiest way to transition.

>> No.4994912

>>4994630
If you've been watching Feng's videos, you'll know that the reason why his lineart is rough is because he uses an old ass version of photoshop without stabiliser/smoothing. Photoshop is widely regarded as having the worst lineart for a reason, it's for painting in and if you want lineart amazing you'll need lots of patience and redrawing. Do you know that manga artists might trace their lineart like six or seven times before it's perfect? If you want awesome manga lineart, use CSP or SAI with a stabiliser. Sometimes it will be 100% be vector lines for perfect width alteration after drawing.

And before you buy into the schizo's screen tablet meme for epic lines, keep in mind that A)Your hand will be covering part of the screen B) There is parallax on all except the most expensive tablets and C) You could be smearing your hand over that hot or glassy screen which is a lot less sexy than it sounds because of the friction. Especially if you are sweaty, this is an issue.

If you can, try out someone else's tablet before you buy it.

IS THIS AN ANTIQUE????

>> No.4994934

>>4994912
The problem with photoshop isn't the stabilizer or lack thereof, there's something shitty with photoshop's brush engine, you just can't have a thin crisp line, it always ends up blurry unless you're using a 15px line on a 10K canvas. In Krita or anything else really you can realistically have a 5 px brush for lineart and work on a 3k canvas.
In photoshop you can't do that, you use 20px lines on fuckhyge canvas just because it's sorta blurry.

And frankly Photoshop today is just bad for everything other than bashing maybe. It was never an art program, some ancient industry dinosaurs keep using it for the sole reason they are used to it.

Sometimes when I alt tabbed too fast CSP's cursor would flicker like crazy for two whole minutes.

I think it was the tablet itself. Because when I got my intuos pro, I no longer had to reset tablet services twice a day, nor did my microusb constantly become disconnected resulting in the need for resetting, nor did I have PS shoelacing or weird jaggy curves.

I also don't want to tell a weird awful emo story about my old bamboo, but I still miss it a lot despite the fact that it sometimes sucked and wish I hadn't accidentally killed it the way I did.

Light stab doesn't really suppress jitter because the waves are rather long the tablet just thinks you're drawing a wave rather than a straight line.

posted thinking, I had that, that is a serial device, computers post 2007 rarely comes with a com port and even if motherboards have the headers, you'd need to get a com lpt I/O plate and then wire it up. Then again this is not guaranteed to work.

And you can't just use a serial to usb adapator either, need at least a teeny with custom firmware and to get it to work with windows 10 you actually have to use a windows vista driver.

I had one of those since 2004 but like wow, I can't believe he's is still using it for 13 years.

So with that alone it's a minimum of $360.

So with the increase of production cost for a larger surface, larger packaging, increased price for logistics (you get it), the luxury tax and scaled profit margin, the $399 price tag actually looks very reasonable.

1) Pick up a medium tablet
2) If you're aiming for a style like Rei's, for the love of god do it in paint tool sai 2 beta and NOT Photoshop (I've used pretty much all the main applications CSP/SAI/PS for between half a decade and a decade so I know the differences between them) and only bring it into PS for the colouring alterations.
3) You can expect to transfer your skill over in the end. It just takes a while

Why do you think ps>sai for coloring? Is ps the best for coloring?

>> No.4997078

>>4997073
That depends on what you mean by "colouring"
Rei style = SAI for sure because of SAI being godlike for smooth blending
PS = better for all painterly and realistic styles because blending things tends to be awful. Your art will tend to look more solid. Brushwork in PS is less accurate than in SAI but the number of painterly brushes is incredibly expansive. You can get a similar style in PS as you can in SAI but it will take you more time and you may need to use stuff like the gradient tool to make it look good. Also PS doesn't like smaller tablets very much. If you are fixated on getting a style like Rei's (or the person in the image) then SAI's probably the best option.

If you want to, say, alter your colours at the very end, hue shifts, colour balance etc, you can also bring it into PS. In fact, .psds are basically cross compatible so you can swap between PS and SAI while working.

Guys, help me out here, I've been thinking about this shit a lot, some outside opinion might help me with some insight.

I've been using a CTL 671 One by wacom for 3 years now, and I've been doing ok with it (pic related) but I want to upgrade my shit, because I think it's about time.

Now, I've always wanted to get a display tablet, but I come from a place where shit is prohibitly expensive (brazil), so purchases like these are a big deal for me. A cintiq 22hd for example is the equivalent to 3.200USD here. I thought about getting a Huion Kamvas 19, which is still expensive as all fuck, but at least I can buy it (~950USD on black friday sales) but judging by these threads, it has a lot of issues (though I'm not sure if it's just 4chan being 4chan or it's actually a bad product).

Is getting a small (13") display even worth it? I feel like it problably won't be much of an upgrade for the amount of money I'd be paying for it.

It's a /pol shill running the thread.
He got purged once for pissing off the mods and he was literally the sole person on the board talking shit about the huions AND roughly 50% of the posts in every thread is one person.

They don't really have any problems and compared to the POS you have right now the "bad chinese pen" is going to feel like butter and magic, and sweets.

>Huion 19
I recommend you getting any of the newer models.
>Xp-Pen Artist pro 15.6
>Kamvas 16 pro
>Kamvas 20 PLUS
The 13" models are just too small, 16" is the minimum that's worth getting. Also they still are selling the older models that so you should conduct your research and make sure you aren't getting an ancient model from 2015 with a battery powered pen.

A smaller tablet is easy to get used to unless you strongly value sketching with your shoulder, which is especially nice for animation.

A used/refurbished 2nd gen ipad pro represents the best value for display tablets right now. Easily the best, smoothest drawing experience, and you won't get any of the quality control issues seen in chinese tablets or even newer wacoms.

As mentioned in the OP, this thread has at least one aggressive Chinese shill, who makes up around 75% of the posts in these threads with rampant samefagging and whining about a "schizo". You can safely discard anything he says,, because he's only interested in selling XP pens and Huions.

Every video I watch online, people are using fuckhueg tablets, but I suppose they're way more affordable overseas. Hand getting in the way is always a problem with display tablets, and one of the major perks of non-display. That's why Intuos pros are so good.

16" is a meme size, it's not big enough for desktop software. The reason 12.9 works better for iPad pros is because native apps like procreate and artstudio do a much better job utilizing the small screen space.

Just popping in here with the others to say that it's just one guy aggressively shilling against Chinese tablets for some unknown reason.
As the other guy said, buying a new tablet from either Huion/XP Pen will feel a lot better compared to what you are currently using. They aren't perfect, and I'm sure an equivalent Wacom would be better in the long run, but for the prices you'd have to pay for Wacom I'd say it's not worth it (talking about that Cintiq you mentioned)
Look up reviews from other sites and then make your decision, because you will get next to no useful information here thanks to shitposters.
As for 16 inch as a size, I used a 12,9 inch Ipad for the longest time and it was fine most of the time, basically the only reason I went bigger in the end is that I wanted more surface area to lean on. After using a 24 inch display tablet and going back and forth between that and the Ipad, I can say the size of the Ipad screen isn't the problem as the space is used effectively.

For disclosure, I use an XP Pen Artist 24 Pro. It's good, I have no real problems with it except that the cursor drifts off of the pen occasionally, but I just twist the pen around a bit and it returns to the correct position.

As you can see, anti-chinese man has already arrived to ruin the thread (again)

You're forgetting that although they recommend it, they ALWAYS note that of course it's not quite up to Wacom quality. It's still the industry standard for a fucking reason. That doesn't mean they're bad. In fact, the Chinese brands are much better than they were 5 years ago. But you fucking get what you fucking pay for.

It's impossible to have a reliable and honest conversation in these threads with all the shills.

If you are /beg/ or looking to buy a tablet, and you're a student and you're unsure, please listen: With Wacom, you WILL pay a premium, but you are getting the industry standard. Bar none. This is simply the fact of the matter. I don't know anyone in the industry who prefers others brands over Wacom.

With other brands, it will be hit or miss. Quality control can really vary (my personal experience with Huion has been good with non-display tabets [I have an Intuos pro Med 2017 and a Huion H1060P] but QC is VERY hit or miss for a lot of people). Because these brands are new, I highly recommend buying the newer products. The leaps in quality are not

If you are a beginner, you can absolutely buy a non-Wacom tablet and it will probably be fine. WHAT MATTERS IS THAT ONCE YOU BUY WHATEVER TABLET YOU CHOOSE, YOU FUCKING USE IT. USE IT EVERY DAMN DAY.

However Intuos Pleb and One by Wacom are legit scam, they have the wacom branding but none of the wacom quality.

As for the Cintiq non-Pro they are questionable too. At least the pen is the wacom pro tech, that's a positive, and that where the positives end.

H610 is an ancient enclosure, I had one, it has problems. H610 squeaks and flexes under pressure, the chinesium micro-USB is a certain disaster waiting to happen, I had one it kept disconnecting from a tiniest wiggle on a regular basis, and that required to restart the drawing program every time.

If you are going to recommend a Chinese tablet it ABSOLUTELY MUST have a micro usb. I had countless Chinese smartphones, gadgets and gimmicks die from a faulty micro-USB. All of my usb-C are still fine, but every single micro-usb has failed. The chinese micros are a fucking plague.

If you lose your sketchbook, at the most you lose your sketchbook. That's NOT how apple works, mate, the app itself will do some fuckery like connect to servers because the devs are a bunch of cucks and then they change the server, issue an app update and because apple is a bunch of the biggest cucks they increase the ios required to install the update.

Bam, dead app because it makes a request and gets some response it doesn't expect. Happens all the fucking time to ios apps. If a person goes the ipad route, they'll just have to pray that whatever developer they're getting things from won't pull this shit and the app just works offline only or else it's programmed in such a way that it won't just die and crash the instant it sees something it doesn't expect.

Work will be shilling out a tablet for me for free -- it has to be ipad for some reason, but whatever. Been comparing the ipad pro 11 inch and ipad air 4 and it seems air 4 has better performance cause newer cpu, but the pro has 120 hz refresh rate. Anyone know if the 120hz display makes a huge difference? I'm not paying for the difference anyways, I just want the best tablet of the two. Do I just get the pro? The 12.9 inch looks huge as fuck so don't really think I want that.

The 120hz screen is a lot smoother, and it feels fantastic to draw on. It makes me wonder why Wacom or other competitors haven't copied Apple in this regard yet, because it's extremely responsive.

Need some help with pc specs, planning to get a Cintiq 16 and an accompanying PC, wondering if these specs would run CSP and PS smoothly: i3-10100F, GTX 1660 Super, 16GB RAM (planning to update to 32) and a NVME SSD.

The only other upgrade I can afford currently is changing the i3 to an i5 10400. I'm a Third World Shitter so these would already cost 6 grand here.

PS and CSP barely uses the GPU at all. PS uses an insane amount of scratch disk. If I have a 200 MB PSD, PS uses MORE THAN than 20 GB of scratch disk space and will be continuously writing to the scratch disk.

Make sure your SSD is big or you have another backup disk. Warning: If your windows operating system is on the C drive and you install photoshop on the D drive, Photoshop will have a bunch of glitches if you try and set D to be used as the scratch disk drive. For example, in 2021 Photoshop I couldn't download the neural filters and had to use a very hacky workaround to make it work. Also in a cracked older version of photoshop 2020 or 2021 Photoshop would freeze forever if I set the scratch disk drive to a drive that wasn't where Windows was installed if After Effects was also installed on the computer.

Make sure you have plenty of space for your PSDs and your scratch disk!

PS and CSP barely use the GPU at all, unless you are using the 3D features of PS. But PS' 3D features are extremely slow anyway, even if you use an SSD. This means you can spend more on your CPU or disk drive than on your GPU.

However, if you decide you want to do 3D art, then you will need a good GPU. But if your GPU is too new, you may have to pay money for certain renderers (and the licenses are VERY expensive) compared to cracking them. So if you want 3D you should check this out.

>>4998988
I think PS is multicore and CSP is single core. But CSP already works very quickly on a bad computer.

>> No.4999001

>>4998988
Yes they use single core speed is important but just with photoshop

Intel Core i3-8350K 4.0GHz Quad Core –> 105%
Intel Core i5-8400 2.8GHz / 4GHz Turbo, Six Core –> 106%

You see similar scores, however photoshop isn't the only thing running on your computer, you could have pornhub streaming in the background or the latest root kit from your pirated photoshop. It has been noted that anything above 4 cores, photoshop sees diminishing returns but those extra cores help when using more than just photoshop.

If you use m0nkrus you won't get a rootkit. You just search m0nkrus on google to get to his site. I guess the thing about PS is that RAM and disk is probably the biggest bottleneck. I never really see Photoshop using my CPU or GPU a lot, but it's almost always using the disk. When it's saving, when you're using smart objects or undoing/redoing or working in 3D it's almost always using the disk! The majority of my lag is when I undo or redo big changes (like if I flip all the layers destructively)

A-anon, speaking from experience, I seriously hope you bought a keyboard for it and pray for your soul that your course coordinators have set up your course website in such a way that you can actually download your lecture notes.

My horrible, no good iPad Uni experiences from a few years back usually began with clusterfuck uni websites that the iPad can't download anything from due to weird embedded frames (which only laptops can download from), flimsy ass keyboards and the app I used to use, Notability, taking half an hour to open up the lecture slides. Why it took so long to open up these lecture slides from only the hardest subject I was taking I have no idea. And then the battery started committing sudoku...

Would a portable tablet like a Galaxy Tab S7+ replace my XP-Pen, or would it just be something for when I'm not at home and want to draw digitally? I'm not planning in buying one right now, but I'm just kind of curious how far along the technology is. I'm afraid also if I have a tablet out in public it's going to get nigged, and in my experience tablets tend to be stupidly fragile for whatever dumb reason even with a case

Again, it's not about the number. it's how the pressure sensor works, does it travel or is it stiff, does it wobble, is it even accurate ets.

I have a family member talented at pencil drawing who I want to get them something for xmas as they are interested in getting into digital drawing. I have only basic knowledge about this, I see 'wacom' thrown a around a lot, but a lot of similar looking tablets for a fraction of the price.

I have a dell laptop that is a touch screen, can this work, or is there something 'better' about those drawing tablets?

Because the OP that made this thread is a shitposter that hates everything that isn't Wacom. XP Pen / Huion are both good alternatives if one doesn't want to pay for a Wacom.

>I have a dell laptop that is a touch screen, can this work, or is there something 'better' about those drawing tablets?

Pressure sensitivity and far better support for a stylus are the two major differences between drawing tablets and a regular touch screen. I wouldn't recommend getting someone a regular touchscreen laptop for drawing for this reason. Then additional bonuses for dedicated drawing tablets are better software support (for drawing), better surface texture (so you're not drawing on pure glass) among other things.

Might be hard to find a display tablet for 200 dollars or whatever your local currency is, but you definitely need to go with XP Pen / Huion then, or try and find something on the second hand market.

No, there's Wacom Connect in a few days but it's just a media event. A new product is unlikely. The likeliest next event where they might have new hardware is CES 2021 in january. IMO their pens are still ahead. I tried huion and the calibration out of box was shit, misaligned everywhere, tilt sucked if you use it, and more wobble and pressure weirdness, which may be related to the fact they recommend using windows ink. Their wintab emulation didn't seem to work for me

The quintessential feature of a drawing tablet is a pen with pressure sensitivity. You can't draw for shit with your finger or one of those smartphone sticks, needs to be pressure sensitive.
>Why is xp-pen not recommended?

one major thing chinks can do is improve pen quality so the sensitivity isn't random depending on which pen you get.
people complaining about their xp-pen not picking up light pressure strokes is common.
if they can get that right with better displays then wacom is in for a rough time.

>> No.4999456

Wacom needs to add touch that isn't garbage. It's what really sets standalone tablets like the iPad Pro apart. Adobe Fresco has general windows support now but you can't use it because it has a touch based UI. It has a new brush engine but it's basically locked out by ergonomics

Nope. For me it is more important at which point does the pen sensor pick up a line, i have a soft touch. And that seems to depend more on the model (and driver i guess) than pressure sensitivity. But as is with other drawing tools, you adjust to the tool after using it for some time, there is no need to get neurotic about it.

Are you mentally retarded? Windows touch support already exists. The API to hook into windows already exists, all 2-in-1 laptops support it. The actual touch digitizer hardware needs to be made by Wacom, so does the palm detection algorithm specific to their hardware. It's not a Microsoft problem it's a wacom hardware and driver problem.
