IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

POST DRAWINGS YOU NEED HELP WITH

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

1.-screenshot the image and post that instead

2.-change camera capture settings to something smaller

3.-send to computer and resize in picresize.com

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

Take your time, you can do it.

doubt so, maybe all you're losing is speed, guess a display tablet would feel similar to trad in the sense of knowing where to put the next stroke thanks to placing the pen directly to the screen, while on a regular tablet you have to play with the cursor and trust your hand. hell it sounds like a non-display tablet and even mouse might help when you have to force yourself to know where to put the next pixel without chicken-scratching like a madman with trad

Recently purchased a book at the bookstore, so I basically have anatomy book on me and can keep a skeleton/body reference in sight at all times and used it while I drew these two over two separate mornings. How long does it take to actually be able to physically draw lines and shit exactly where and how I intend to?

I drew all the time growing up but unfortunately I drew almost entirely with my fingers and wrist and would get cramps. It's been some (many) years since I stopped, and have been off and on trying to get back into over the past several years but it's fucking frustrating. shape of egg and shape of shadow adjusted, this is just observation in the drawing stage and the reason you shouldn't rush. if the shape of the egg is off but the form is accurate, it will look strange.

softer transitions on the shadow on the egg itself, largely done with hard round and some soft round on top.

bottom part of the shadow lightened and softened considerably, again hard round and soft round on top

random edges in the background softened out. these draw attention and ruin the edge structure of the overall image. an edge is always a point of interest and if they're randomly everywhere it will look messy

made the edge on the egg itself more consistent, you can see this at the top where you unintentionally left a weird smudgy soft edge right next to the shadow

some occlusion under the egg, although it's not so much occlusion in the ref as just a cast shadow and the form turning away, but you left it completely empty for some reason

also a specular highlight roughly where it should be. the light side of your egg was mostly a flat grey, don't forget to pay attention to highlights

also re: the other guy telling you to block it in to do it quicker, blocking certainly saves time in the beginning stages but don't feel like an hour is a long time for this. The point of the study is to learn something, and it is a successful study when you have done this - the time is it takes is irrelevant, and there's no reason to rush if it might compromise your learning. Things like gestures are different because you're trying to force yourself to simplify the rhythms and not get caught up in the details, short timers aren't always beneficial

Cont. The caveat here is don't get caught up in making it perfect and mindlessly noodling. If you can get something worthwhile out of a study in 2 hours, there's no point in spending another 8 turning it into a perfect copy of the reference. You're not trying to photocopy the image, you're trying to understand why specific aspects work the way they do. Always stay critical, and if your study has served its purpose, move on and do another one, or take some notes, or do an original piece and try to apply your observations

I am not baiting and am very bad at perspective and just started trying to put somewhat good perspective into my drawings. Last time I drew a drawing with decent perspective was when I was 15, and I’m 19 now kinda lost interest in drawing for a few years so I’m really bad.

First attempt at fabrics and shading after doing the proko lessons. I need to learn how to blend properly, its pretty messy. Also need to be less scared of using white tones/contrast next time.
I learned how to colour without getting white pixelation around the edges in photoshop after watching a mangaka speedraw video, never thought I'd learn something from that.
Was fun to do this, should properly not do an old warhammer mode as a refl next time. It has odd proportions

you don't need to worry about perspective now. you need to draw from reference pictures and train your eye and hand by just observing and copying from photos.

none of what you just said is relevant or interesting, don't use it to justify bad work

don't try to fix up your symbol drawn tree by injecting what you think is perspective into it, you're way way too early. just draw a lot more first. draw people, draw trees, draw the crap on your desk, draw everything, and when you have some mileage and your observation has improved, you will start to better understand how perspective fits into the picture and begin addressing fundamentals

just overlay the ref and see where you're going wrong. the values are off almost everywhere, it's not blending that's the issue. your observation needs much practice. you said this was an attempt at fabrics but this isn't fabric, it's a statuette - even so, you haven't actually constructed the fabric at all. the folds haven't been observed properly (look at the crease in the elbow and look at your random marks and ask yourself how they actually relate to the drapery.)

bones are important when it comes to figure drawing.

aside from dictating proportion (along with muscles and fat, but vertically it's really all about the skeleton) there are several areas of the body where they are close to the surface of the skin and will affect how that area looks under different conditions; there are also bones that are commonly used as landmarks when drawing and might help you with measuring your proportions in other drawings. it's not essential to memorize the whole skeleton right now but start to factor these things in as you study more

yes your bone structure is decent and the features are the problem right now. figure out how the eye sits in its socket and then look at how eyes work in perspective. understanding the form of the eyeball and eyelid will help you a lot with this. your eyebrows are also not working in line with the sockets properly. the nose is meh, it's not structured at all and the protrusion doesn't make sense. the mouth is warped beyond belief, the philtrum is completely uncentred and skewed towards us, the shape of the lips is odd which makes the smile feel unnatural

the features, what we actually see, are what gives away the structure of the skull. if you wonk the features, it will ruin the structure, no matter how perfect it is. keep going, you know what you need to study

Stop shading (for a while) and stop using a soft graphite.
Get a 3mm or 5mm mechanical pencil and focus on accuracy.

Focus more on your subject rather than the drawing, also start drawing small gestures rather than large ones (About 2x2 inches), you have much more control and it makes you focus on how many lines to put down, (depending if you're timing yourself) you want to use as few li es as possible, its also beneficial to work on linework/lineweight to emphasize your gestures. Hope this helps anon

Most of these were 1-2 minute poses. I feel like I just run out of time before I can even get the shape of the body in my head. As for drawing with as few lines as possible I understand, I just end up drawing a line, it comes out wrong, then I redraw it so it ends up looking messy as hell.

It helps to focus on the hands and feet, since that's usually where the gestures force comes from. It's also where the gestures shape takes form (imagine a line running down the subject from their upper torso to the bottoms of their feet, if it looks like a C-pose then keep a mental note of that), like I said before, doing thumbnail-sized gestures will help you not lose sight of the finished result, in your case if you do small gestures under that timeframe it makes the process much more easier. Dont worry if you made a mistake, acknowledge it and move on. If you repeat the same line over and over to correct it, people looking at the gesture will be focused more on the line you tried to fix than the gesture itself. One more thing, don't worry if you exaggerate the pose or if the proportions are off, gesture drawings are meant to focus on the gesture, they aren't the finished product (here's kind of that you should be aiming for, again use as little lines as possible, dont focus on the details like I did, it only slows you down).

Anon, u r better than me, and unlike in music, it's really hard to cover up fundies with style and charisma. I'm just bad. If I could play u a 4 chord folk punk song you'd be impressed and wouldn't care that my barre chords are a little dull sounding, you'd be entertained by my singing and posture. But with drawing, the artist is so much more easily removed from the art itself. It comes closer to objectivity. And if that is the case then it's hard to separate your work from comparison to others. And I'd just like to say you are better than me. Though, I'd just like to wonder why does your brain power rank everything? Why does your brain put you on the lowest rank?
