I'm an art autist (can do it for hours) and have no other talent. Is being a graphic designer reliable life long job? How is it like to work as one long-term? If not should I just give up and force some non art degree?

You don't need a degree for anything art related unless it's Industrial Design. Get a useful degree.

If you are a girl gifted with the S-shape + thicc, you can also sell yourself on Onlyfans.
If you are hot with brains + S shape = instagram model + artists, pimp yourself while promote art channels.

If you are gifted with symmetry and skinny genes you can become a fashion model/actress + promote art channel.

Options for male and female defers.

For males, you either be the top of your game. or you mimic what is already out there. Because you ain't gonna pimp yourself out unless you got the funneh + god-like bodies.

You can still learn some interesting things from it (Like programs or stuff related to printing), but outside of that, It's more about making corporate shit... and functionality. I don't care if some graphic designer is considered an artist, I'll stick to just drawing desu

No. it’s a dead industry. You can pay chinks on fiver to make literally anything you could want. Third worlders have access to the necessary tools, they’ll work for a fraction of what you will and work six times harder because they will die of starvation if they don’t. Only do graphic design if you’re a hot chick at this point but why the fuck would you bother doing graphic design if you were a hot chick? If it was worth you Pershing graphic design you’d already be doing it, if you’re not already good at this point it’s too late

If you work for a company it doesen't pay well, maybe double minimum wage, but you're payed less than the sales team.
If your freelance you can get paid more, but you have to hustle find clients, keep clients and get ripped off with no legal resources., and have no benefits package.
Hardest pill you'll have to swallow is that you have no say in creating the art. Customer wants a stupid change, you do it, sales person wants a change you do it, art director, manager, all of these people have more control over the final product than you. You have to work in the margines to fix their shitty ideas, someone wants yellow text on a white background, you add a drop shadow without them asking.
If you don't have a degree, no one with interview you, you have to scum randos on the internet.

Find a college that offers a degree in UI/UX for computer programming. They're a little related. It won't burn you out of your art doing it on a daily basis, and you still get to do something creative. UI/UX isn't hard to pick up, hardest thing is that you'll probably have to take other comp sci classes alongside the graphic design classes. And the biggest thing is you won't be living paycheck to paycheck after your degree and you'll be employable.

As someone who dropped out of college last 2018, I advise you to get a degree and save yourself. I envy my classmates making 3x what I make freelancing, despite my skill level I struggle to make $1000 every year, why? Because I am autistic like you and don't know shit about marketing, so get a degree, get an easy job that pays the bills then do your art shit on the side. As for me I'm turing 24 next month and it's too late to go back to school again.

Gee I dunno, maybe all of the information in the sticky, the wealth of free knowledge on the internet, the multitude of other, much more reasonably priced art programs available online, etc.
Art school is not even a particularly good way to learn art because very seldom do they actually teach technical skill these days, and when they do it's just a truncated version of what's in the books mentioned in the sticky.

Ok look bud you can self teach core art values that no atelier or university or teacher will ever be able to reach you, the problem is that is not enough to get you up on being an artist, it's not as easy as you think.
Or maybe it is. Never really tried selling anything myself in the art market.

Degrees suck in general, dont do an art one unless you want to get connections or friends. If you really like art then its just a complete waste of time, hone your skill and instead go for a business degree, it will teach you how to market yourself.

OP Im a lurker from 2014ish since then I've gone to college and graduated.

I went and got a business degree from a pretty good school and graduated last year. Didnt have a lot of fun, it was a mainly a commuter college and didnt get the whole "college experience" much less make any friends or explore myself.

My idea was basically, get a stable job with a good solid generic bus degree and do art on the side. After a couple years I started to get severely burned out. I realized as bad as I wanted to be I am just not the kind of person who does well in a business/sales enviroment. I am a pretty shy sensitive person with bad anxiety. If you are that kind of person I would recommend industrial design, architecture or do some kind of STEM/Art hybrid that can get you jobs other than art like data analytics.

So really the only advice is to have fun when your in college, get out and explore and do what makes you happy. Ive gravitated back to what makes me happy (art, marketing, photography) but wish I had done more of it in college. I am in a good financial situation and will be buying a house probably within the next year debt free but I wouldnt say Im necessarily happy, I would probably be if I went to art school.

I'm gonna answer your question in two parts:

1. Yes, being a graphic designer is a reliable career; in fact, it's arguably THE most reliable, well-paying art career out there. If you want to do commissions, it feels like everyone and his/her mother wants branding done. There are also many companies you'll find on LinkedIn, Indeed, etc. that are looking for graphic designers of various levels of experience because logos and advertisements NEED good designers for their appeal.

--

2. Honestly, the degree you go for depends on your current experience as an artist. Until I went for my BA I had zero previous art experience aside from doodling when I was a kid, so I went for a Studio Arts degree and experimented in storyboarding, painting, sculpture, and...you guessed it, graphic design. When I lucked into a connection that got me my first coordinator job working on movie trailers, my GD knowledge and simply having a four-year degree were the deciding factors in getting me hired.

If you already have a solid portfolio and experience as an artist, I would recommend getting a degree related to marketing. Marketing is at least half of what being an artist is all about, and you need to know how to sell yourself and your work to other people, no matter whether it's for full-time production or logo commissions.

I hope this helps give you some idea of what you want to do.
