I don't even know anymore. I guess I've stared at it for too long but I have no idea where I'm going with this anymore. Trying to figure out the environment killed my will to continue with this. It became stale and overly complicated and the environment is so complex it actually takes away from the focal point and defeats the purpose of the image. Fuck it, into the bin it goes.

Takes legit 5 min to come up with something more interesting and less clusterfucky. This is what i get for not thumb nailing.

Clean your edges and group your values a bit more before thinking about soft-edges and gradients. for example try to group your drapery shadows into a few unified shapes.
Right no everything look a bit fuzzy/muddy.

>>4984967
The subject is positioned awkwardly where he just touches the big shadow shape in the background.

I'd say a quick fix you can try is to bring the shadow block a bit down and cast a light on the top of your subject so they differentiate from the BG.

I think suspension of disbelief is fine for the kid riding. Some of the textures you used to blend in the snow with tall dead grass/twigs look nice btw. I think maybe adding a similar motion blur to the end of the back hind leg to just give it a litte OOPMH in the motion. Maybe try making the intersection of the two most middle in frame legs into more of a lost edge to the leg it is crossing over. This looks nice, your line work and hatching are very expressive, especially on the face and hair. The perspective is grounded well too, he really feels like he's leaning against the wall. I think the foot looks a little strange, and having only one foot visible makes the way he's standing feel off as well. Generally, the outside edge of a foot is pretty straight, it's the inside edge (toward the big toe) that curves inward to form the arch. With only one foot visible, the base of the foot makes me think it's his left foot, and then the arrangement of the toes makes me think it's the right foot, if that makes sense.

>too small and too big at the same time.
Foreshortening is a function of distance from the camera, not only the distance between to similar objects. Try with your hands, one close your eye, one at arm's length. Note that size difference in your hands will not be the same difference you see in someone across the room from you doing the same thing. Your far hand is 200-300% as far as the near one, other person's might be 10% further in distance.

If you're gonna put any foreshortening on dude's near vs. far legs/knees, it probably should be very slight, unless his knee is in the camera's lens.

Pretty good man, really well observed. Did you trace over top of it? Tracing here can definitely be a good way to understand the forms, but I would do some freehand sketches as well. Maybe with a less complicated subject, though.
Also, I would for sure include the ground plane as part of your wireframe, especially with a reference like that. Being able to include a 3D form with its surroundings is super important, dropping down a grid should help you get a feel for it.

I wouldn't really have been able to tell what this is if you hadn't explained. Not trying to be mean here, I think the biggest issue is actually a mismatch of painting style and reference. Something like >>4988584 only looks good if you paint it photorealistically, because aside from the details of the water there isn't really anything interesting going on. If you want to paint looser, choose references that lend themselves to it with interesting shapes and colors and more of a sense of depth. On the other hand, if you want to paint more detailed pieces, actually put in the time and refine it.
Also, the blurry foreground element doesn't really work. In a more detailed piece you could achieve a similar effect by leaving it less detailed, but in a simple painting you gotta commit and either put it in or leave it out.

I had some good advice from /ic/ when I started this a year ago. I worked on it some more recently.

So far what I'm planning for each portrait:
1:The backlight under the zygomatic arch doesn't look right. Lighter background so that it matches with 2 better.
2:The colors clash too much. The color banding is too apparent. Make the palm a little smaller on the pinkie side. The tangents with 3 bother me
3:Darker accents. Does it look like he has pink hair coloring? I might change that. Maybe lower the horizon.
4:ctrl+m to make the whole thing lighter. Lighter sunglasses. Ctrl+u to differentiate the hues from 6 a little more.
5:Reduce contrast. Make surfaces less reflective. Mouth a little lower. The background is a screen, Do I dare add chromatic aberration on it?
6:More atmospheric pers. There's something weird with the eyes

I think I'm gonna do these finishing touches in a day or two with a fresh perspective. So if you guys have any ideas I'll consider them as well. I also put a black and white version for values.

Do you guys get a ref when you're still in early gesture/sketch phase? I have this issue whenever I start drawing and I hit a stalemate and realise I don't get forms/anatomy well enough yet to do it from imagination, but than have issues implementing photo ref elements as it kills the energy of the sketch. Gonna do an arctic fox explorer for cdc this month. Let's see how it goes.

hey anon I'm not the guy you were responding to, and I'm not trying to be adversarial, but judging solely on that study you might actually be red/green colour blind if you haven't been tested yet. I've known a couple of colour blind artists and they do tend to have trouble finding skin tones, usually leaning towards making them very yellowy as you've done here. were you trying to go for accuracy, or are you taking a lot of artistic liberty for this study?

Anyways i did not goe for accuracy, since i just picked what came in my mind. You can see there is green and more blue/violet on my attempt.
Here's one more and here i took a lil' bit more time to choose the colours.
Left mine and right i colourpicked..

the foreshortening looks a little exaggerrated, although that could be a stylistic choice. try drawing in some background, that could help ground your characters. also try starting to add light and shadow, by showing their form you should be able to give some sense of weight. good job though anon!

I'd say color is allright, maybe look at more reference, there is more color under water than people think. Make the setting more specific. And also, your guy could use more space to swim in, he is tightly cropped, especially the way his back fin is cut by the picture border is distracting. Also too much forground and too black, not specific. In general you're good but be more specific.

Put some sharp edges in there to create focus. Also the high contrast is costing you legibility, the forms of your subject are hard to read. Think 3D, like a sculpture, there's never so much black in nature, even in shadows.

I like the eye and the bottom part of the beard, there's some nice shapes there. Feel like you need to work on the nose and mouth more, but like less contours.
