I'm venting here because you guys are like a family to me (despite being faggots).

I feel desperate and I am wondering if I should not abandon art. To put things into perspective I'm fluent in Japanese and I've made a living out of it for years on now.
The "issue" is that I do not necessarily feel fulfilled on this path, so for the past year or so I've put work aside to focus on my art more, to draw for myself, doing personal stuff.

The thing is whether or not I'll make any money out of this is really fuzzy. I just want freedom, I don't want to feel drained by whatever obligations or anything. I want to be in this state and feel like the world supports me for it.
Sadly reality isn't as forgiving. If it were then everyone would be trying to self-actualize. So I then started wondering if I shouldn't pursue some sort of path like "draw R18" or "make fan arts" and make commissions, that way I could gain mileage that way and grow as an artist, for the day I can go back to my personal projects... but I feel like I may not wired to undertake something like this. It feels difficult to not be true to my feelings. I feel retarded and envious of people who can easily ignore their feelings and draw whatever they need to for a living. You could ask me "well isn't what you want to do enough to make a path?" and the answer is that I absolutely have no idea. It's just too hard to be true to myself all while telling myself that everything will be OK.
Also it's not even that I don't know what discipline is, I've needed plenty of it to make my career work, but for art, it seems different. Everything seems so crowded too. Am I just supposed to fit some slot out there based on what people are ready to throw their money at?

I feel like a pathetic baby typing this here, but that shows how cornered and exhausted I am I suppose. I apologize but I'm grateful for anyone who took the time to read this.

I'd love to have anything that's more creative than what I'm doing for my day job now.
I recently cut my hours to 4 days a week so I'd have more time/energy to practice drawing, I realize cutting hours isn't possible for everyone but it really made me feel better about what I was prioritizing with my life. With my current skill level I still need years to get to a pro level but I'll be damned if I can manage to cut hours to my shithole job and stay afloat to practice what I'm actually passionate for.

I feel like Bill Cunningham had it right when he said, "If you don't take money, they can't tell you what to do." Just food for thought, I hope you figure out what works best for you sooner than later because I've definitely been where you are and it's a rough patch to be in. But it's solvable, for sure.

That's a good quote and quite relevant indeed.
Like you said I might go actually ahead and try to make money drawing for a while and see if that sparks anything in me. I won't post my work but I'm not so beg that I couldn't start with cheap comissions soon probably.

Don’t worry anon. There are plenty of opportunities for you to create your own work and sustain yourself at the same time. Firstly, if you have a social media platform, don’t be afraid to post what you love to make rather than what you don’t. It may not get as many likes as a fan art or lewd might, but if your art is high quality and something you love then people will naturally be attracted to it. Slowly but surely a community of people who do care about your own interests will build. Don’t give up anon. You might have to rely on networking, or fan arts or style challenges to reach a larger audience from time to time, but it’s totally possible for you to achieve fame as an ‘original content’ artist as many others have, while outsourcing a commission to make ends meet. Platforms like Patreon, red-bubbble and ko-fi can help you move forward and let your dedicated fans support you, and help monetise your work and ideas at little to no cost. It may be scary anon but it’s totally possible for you to do. It sounds here like you’re personal projects are what interest you, it might be hard but you should open up but eventually, and allow your audience to take interest in them.

Think of all the successful Webtoon , Twitter and Instagram artists who are making a sustainable living creating what they alone love. You can do it anon. You’re gonna make it.

For once a week, you would have to upload 14 weeks in a row. And any extra drawings you make during that period doesn't count. Yup. So what I did was draw every day for 14 days (with the interval set to daily). You have to spend at least 30 minutes per piece, but you can also say, do a sketch a day, a flat the next day and the full version on the third day.

Spreading out your art, say per day etc, is also the best for growing your account on social media.

Was the discord worth it? Probably not? But you're going to need the gains anyway and 14 extra pieces is good for your mileage.

As to why I think that's /int/, it's mostly because your audience won't really know or care if you're drawing with or without a reference unless you get outed for something like tracing. If you can produce something decent from a reference, plenty of artists can just stay as realistic artists forever and draw people, pets, characters etc. The director in this course I was listening to was talking about (in the industry) how some of the people he knew couldn't draw without ref at all.

But yes, ML is a legitimate concern assuming that companies can actually convince artstation/DA/pixiv to give API access to highly rated art and they have access to good computing resources. GPUs are great for art. They're also great for training models. Anything posted on twitter they already have access to because it's already used very commonly used for training competitions.

It probably affects hyper realistic and concept artists more than the rest of us. If you very carefully select the dataset machine learning's actually super powerful and it could learn trends like composition and lighting. A lot of the toy ones suck because they tend to use tiny datasets, but a big well labeled one would actually be scary, I reckon. The only thing stopping it from happening now is the lack of a good dataset, if they could wring one it would be very scary.

I've seen so many crazy things recently. There's this crazy new thing in 3D where people use cameras to create 3d models in something like meshroom. It's called photogrammetry.

I also saw one of my favourite artists draw in VR. Super jealous that they have a headset, though. Just imagine how awesome it would be to walk around in and paint in 3D space.

2D is always going to have its place but things are rapidly changing, especially as a lot of the 2D art applications now have 3D features like PS and CSP. The ML features in photoshop, which were previously limited to pretrained third party plugins like Topaz, are now being integrated into the program itself. Right now it's sort of memey, but one should consider who owns all these images.

When someone traces, I can see who's copying what.

If an AI learns to weight features, you could end up with something that it's actually impossible to identify the parts of what trained it.

Sounds like you might be getting bogged down by details too soon. Usually, readjusting things late is normally a result overworking things before you tie the idea down. A big problem with this is you get distracted by details that don't aid your overall piece. If digital, work where you can see the entire piece until you're satisfied enough to move forward. Define things that aren't clear/too sketchy early rather than later and don't leave things to 'solve' later.

Ctrl+0 in most programs will fit your canvas to your screen. Try to keep your vision clear and make early adjustments that help your overall drawing before zooming in.

it was originally dizziness, I got a lot of MRI's, EEG's, x Ray's, I saw like 30 doctors in one year. I was so dizzy I could barely get out of bed or draw. I missed my finals because just getting up made the room spin. I thought I'd be a cripple and a burden on my family. One doctor gave me xanax and it went away and I could draw and go to school again.

Yea I got diagnosed with f41.9 aka general anxiety. So I know how serious it can be. I suffered uncontrollable panic attacks, my emotions were compromised and I was in constant worry. And it's for the same reason as you, worried about your health or a condition or other probable condition. I was even desperate enough to go on anxiety forums because it was that bad. I couldn't sleep because of insomnia, I couldn't be alone or shower for too long because my thoughts would go wild, I was completely at a loss on how to deal with it because I had no one to talk about it. I was considering therapy and medicine because I took 1/3 of a xanax pill and I was back to normal and talking helped me a ton. This shit lasted for 6 months or so. I finally got over it after I realized some things.

But in general, medicine is not the answer for general anxiety.
