counterpoint: michelangelo didn’t even consider himself a painter and hated painting, finding it beneath him, as it is plebeian art, contrasted by sculpting, which is true art and his actual calling

>> No.4980257

I think people shouldn't apply quotes from 500+ years ago to modern day work ethics.
The works of these people are timeless, but what they said was entrenched in the context of their time, which is radically different from today. E.g. a reclusive misanthrope like Michelangelo would never make it today, he was confrontational, never followed directives and was notoriously awful to work with.

Ironically, Michelangelo got eternally butthurt because the much younger Raphael was universally regarded as the better painter and beat him out of a commission by the pope at age 26.

The concept of talent as something innate that is different from a learned skill has been around since at least the Roman times, as related by Ars Poetica by Horace, which was seminal to the conception of art in the Renaissance. If one reads biographies such as those by Vasari you will see them praise talent as something which is natal or G*d-given. For example the first paragraph of Leonardo's biography by Vasari, if I recall. Often he notes that a painter's genius is an expression of the painter's natural disposition. Design (disegno) was also thought of as something which manifests through man G*d's own creativity (segno di dio in nos), and was considered the one art from which stems not only drawing itself, but painting, sculpture, and architecture--and therefore noble. Another important concept is invention (invenzione), with which an artist create with novelty and variation.

iirc DaVinci thought artists who didn't shade their work were NGMI. Michelangelo was all about hard work, Bernini thought success came from working hard, good examples and critique. pretty much all the major artists seemed to not believe in talent, just dedication and striving to achieve the best result.
