Ive been reading drawing heads and hands by loomis and ive reached perspective in drawing the head, but i dont feel like ive learned anything from all my art to that point. Like nothing sticks and i have to look at the guide to draw heads again. Question is when im copying the work from the book, i should create my own original pieces that are germane to the topic of the chapter?

There's no right way to study those books. The only thing I can tell you is: The more effort you put into them, the more you'll get out of them. If you create your own original pieces incorporating the concepts from the book, you'll definitely improve a lot more than if you didn't. Draw a lot from photo references, draw a lot from the book, draw a lot from imagination, and draw a lot from other books. The only thing that matters is your concentration and effort.

Recently I came to the conclusion that any time I find myself faltering on art, it is not the art itself which is causing me strife. My willpower only buckles around the crippling weight of human existence as I realize the crushing and oppressive reality which I find myself trapped in. Any form of compassion or happiness and goodwill I feel towards others is more often than not stamped out by disgust and revulsion for the animals that infest this world. I do not believe I will face issues in being a great artist. I do however believe that humanity will continually disappoint me and be a thorn in my side. There seems to be little recourse I can take as well, at least for now while my power is limited. What I’m trying to say is, how can I reconcile with the mediocrity and all around awfulness of the world I live in?

How do you extend your mileage?

I try to push myself to draw for more than an hour a day but usually feel like quitting after finishing a sketch or after doing lineart, flats, etc. Usually when I push myself to draw for a few hours straight it’s either a) personal work that I’m really excited about b) I’m on a deadline, or c) I’m just trying to improve myself and my process. And usually I burn out and have to reset a few days later starting with 45 minutes.
Should I just set tighter deadlines with clients to push myself harder? I’m kinda tired of pulling tricks on myself just to get things done, I already do similar bullshit to force myself through schoolwork.

Man I used to. And often times I still do. But not daily. It might be that my maslow’s pyramid is all fucked up, like the basement is flooded and the support beams are rotting while I’m chipping away at the top trying to self-actualize. Or maybe the act of drawing is so tied up in associations of skill and success and income(or a lack of each) that I’m just looking for an exit somewhere, which is why I quit whenever I feel like I’ve reached a checkpoint.
It also doesn’t help that my work can take upward of 10 hrs of continuous work but I end on something I’d feel bad charging someone more than $65 for.

You can also probably do some fan-art for some big twitter artist and I guess that at the very begging, well, if your art is good enough, is probably the easiest and more effective way, but at the very start with 0 followers you're probably going to be seen as a follower whore that literally just did that so you could get some followers.

Additionally it’s more than just sadness, there’s a strong touch of violent anger mixed in as well, but I’m good at regulating my emotions.

Sorry for being retarded but I'm new to digital art what is there a difference between values and grayscale??
Also I have downloaded around 3 courses on digital painting and I'm so lost.
Every course starts with movie cutscene in black and white or a painting and they painted with limited values (?) but I'm so lost on slot of things
Every instructor says just pick 2 or 3 values and start with them but I have no idea what to pick or how to use them in my painting. I could spend 3-4 hours on a painting trying to get my values to match the movie/painting reference but it's not even close.
I understand light and shadow works and I have first to separate light from dark and work from there.
I just feel something is missing or I'm not understanding something.
I have been doing this for 2 weeks now and my results are horrible, they look totally shit, Iam too ashamed to even post it they don't even deserve a criticism.
What should I do?

It depends on the medium but you find that traditional, the medium does some extra lifting. The texture adds extra details and shapes, the way you mix two colours gives more variations when you apply it because you didn't mix the colours to a pure consistency, to just how the light bounces of it when looking at it.

With digital it's easy to forget these things happen and that you need to apply it yourself.

Like I said its the little things. Digital tends to get tighter.

Since you mentioned watercolors, just wetting the paper first, letting colors spread and desaturate, is so much easier on traditional. Lay the next color next to it and over the top and it overlays itself.

On digital you have to control it, tell the computer how you want it to be done. Digital lends it self well to being tight and stiff compared to traditional.

Even when inking, traditionally when two lines cross, where they intersect because of ink floats on top, it merges with the ink of the other line creating this rounded inner corner, where in digital you have to draw this rounded corner yourself.

It's the little things the mediums do for you that can make a big difference.

I see a lot of artist who do studies that look like pic related by Tom Fox. The sketching style is direct with little to no construction lines and measurements are mostly eyeballed. They're not too worried about getting the silhouette and shapes just right and accept a pretty big margin for error. They draw their subject once and then move on. The guys who fill sketchbook pages with drawings like this tend to have a good ability to draw from imagination and having a fast sketching style is obviously a good way to amass a volume of sketches.

Now to the question. When I approach studies like this I don't seem to retain much if anything from what I'm drawing. I only seem to be able to use my studies for imaginate work when I draw with careful measuring and draw the same thing over and over with plenty of construction lines. For instance, if I study a hand I'll draw the same hand with and without reference atleast a dozen of times with progressively more simplified construction. The only problem with this method is that it's slow and painstaking way of studying and quantity over quality seems to be best way according to those who teach drawing.

You can stop drawing, give it a full day to rest but then draw again the next day and start feeling it within an hour. No one can give a definite answer, its your body.

It seems like you are drawing digital. Hold your stylus perpendicular to the tablet. This will help you unconsciously stop drawing from the wrist and make it easier to apply pressure without relying on the wrist.

On that point also increase your pressure sensitivity if you don't know how to use the weight of your arm to increase the pressure instead and have just been relying on pushing the nib down using your fingers and wrist.

For your mouse, get a bigger mousepad and try to use the whole pad to move from one edge of the screen to another instead of lifting it up constantly in the same little area.

When you have nothing else on your plate but drawing, then that's all you have to focus on. It's not like you force yourself to ignore things, that takes energy. You set yourself up in a situation in which you don't have to do that and all that's left to do is to draw. This also means removing your annoying thoughts of the past or whatever too.

this has probably been asked a thousand times but i have some specific questions, and im dumb as fuck so i don't know omg

here's some context so

I took my first commission and I already started working on the thing, i told the guy the price it seems like theyre okay with it. I then sent them a rough sketch they were okay with it, did a few adjustments on it.

so i started working on the rendering, the character is almost done i just have to work on a simple background now and check if there's anything weird that i haven't noticed yet.

so here's the questions:

1. i know i was supposed to ask for the money upfront but since it's my first time i have like no reputation or anything, so i was planning on asking for it now that's about to be done or when it's done (before i send them the actual files)
is that okay? or should I straight stop now, ask for the money and then continue??

2. how many times do u ask the client for input/opinions? I sent them the first rough sketch to know if they were okay with it. ended up doing some adjustments. now i sent them a thumbnail of the render to know if they're okay with it (probably shouldn't have).

I used to take payment aftet sending the initial sketch. Only once was I not paid after the sketch and the commission was dropped, didnt care to ask them again since it was dumb fetish crap. Now that I have more of a reputation to keep I take payment upfront, if they dont like it they can either pay half up front and half after the sketch or go away.
Never send the completed artwork without being paid next time. You're literally working for free because they can just take whatever you sent so far and block you. Ask for their paypal email and send them an invoice and make sure they pay.
I mostly take input from the client at the sketch phase and adjust it up to 3 times. More than that they can just say they dont like it and have it cancelled but that never happened. If I finish the artwork they sometimes ask for a minor change, I just do an over paint which is easy

but when it comes to art i didn't really know much either. I would say what you really need when it comes to drawing a comic is the confidence to really draw anything. You can really put yourself in a situation where you just don't know how to draw a scene you want and settle on something worse.

That means you need to have a strong sense of perspective, gesture, and construction.

You're already well on your way for the first stage of doing a sight-size drawing.

You're supposed to go for the total object first with rough outlines, then you do the same thing again but this time going for more detail and where you're intending to place value with more refined shapes, and then finally shading in values in those areas where you've indicated where form from value will be.

When you're doing block-ins it's not necessarily drawing the shapes as lineart and then shading, it's adding value to make the form itself.

Learning about perspective is a good to jump start judging distance but it boils to practice and experience. The more you draw from life say drawing people in malls or in the street, the easier it is to learn as oppose to drawing from photographs as the 3D element of distance has already been resolved and put into 2D.

If you are talking about measuring there are many methods, sight sizing, comparative measuring, mapping and proportions, envelope method, negative and positive spaces etc but most of the time you will be using all of these in conjunction.

It’s fair because you’re not doing anything right, you don’t know how to do anything right in drawing, this is not your fault but is only the outcome of having no knowledge or guidance on what to do. You can’t possibly expect to get much better if you’re trying to guess where you’re wrong when you don’t understand what the correct answer is in the first place like I said do the Watts fundamentals drawing courses, then move onto head fundamentals with Brian Knox and take some livestream critiques next semester. If you can’t afford it then get a job. You’ll only get what you put in. The smart thing to do right now is to understand where you are and be humble enough to realize that everyone needs help from great artists and teachers, having a teacher will shorten your time training as long as you put in the effort. Get critique and good education from pros before you build too many bad habits that require even more time to remove.

It's not an A-Z guide but starts of with things you should take note of as a beginner before introducing fundamentals and giving you resources to further your investigations.

People often gloss over and miss important parts, like "As stated before, the first thing one must learn is how to see. If you can’t accurately see and draw what’s right in front of you, then you can’t deconstruct it to see its buildings blocks".

Try to read through it and at least give it a fair try and keep in mind that you will not understand all of the concepts and information in one sitting. One section at a time, take away what you can. Good luck!

Developing a critical eye is the first thing you need for self assessment. This will develop in time as long as you are engaging in focused practice
https://line-of-action.com/article/focused-practice-an-exercise-for-real-improvement-in-33-days/

Set clear goals, take a photo of your first day of practice and forget about measuring progress, focus on doing what you set out to do such as 1 session of figure drawing a week. After 6 months compare your most recent to your first, you will definitely see improvement.

Progress is always going to be slow and comparing your drawing too frequently can be disheartening and remember immediate feedback doesn't always equate to immediate improvement.

Feed back and explanations is always important but is hard to get so I tend to take more stock in trying to get people to learn on their own, or at least find resources themselves than guide them step by step.

Be someone who can learn well and everybody can be your teacher.
