Why You Should Copy Anime:
https://i.imgur.com/zNDsyF0
https://youtu.be/t_IODIIYAe0

**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Draw copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

For starters the location of the ear, not to mention she is missing her cranium you may imply form by adding more volume for the hair but your main issue involves the proportion of the face you gave her a long face. By moving features down you may be able to correct the general shape of the head.

Do everything this guy said, but also have fun with it if you want it to be a hobby. You know what I'm saying when I say fun. The best stuff you do is when you're not over-thinking it, where drawing from imagination isn't difficult. Do fun stuff to start, like heads and expressions. Maybe just do that for a while, work on getting eyes right. Do a couple decent IRL heads, then try referencing abstractions you like. Loomis has good books for learning heads. I tried doing that thing Marco bucchi recommends, where you put a monochrome filter over your work and shade that way so you can’t focus on the hues you’re selecting, and you just work with values temporarily. I’m still finishing up the clothes

Anyway any meaningful advice for anything in it? I had trouble mostly with the face and the back of her head/neck. I think I’ll liquify it’s in a bit or paint over it when I can figure it out

When do most anime artists opt not to use reference? Are there some who always use those because they don't out themselves by streaming?

>> No.4971901

Its supposed to give you a decent idea of what the head structure is like. You don't have to follow the exercises in them, but you can take the concepts in the book and try to copy anime drawings you like in a simplified way using those concepts. You don't need to draw old men.

Also, you don't necessarily have to start with Loomis. imo, if you're starting out, try learning basic construction and gesture before learning anatomy.

Basically, learn some fundies, copy anime using what you learned, and draw for fun a lot. If you don't do that last part, you're guaranteed to burn out.

Something looks majorly off about the lighting but I can't figure out what it is. The lighting on the arm should affect the sleeve. The halo lighting should be hitting the top of the breast, the zipper and the buckles.
Because of the light from the halo and wings, shadows should be cast more deeply on the surrounding walls. Because of the halo, if the light is reaching out from beyond her hair, it could be hitting the metal stairs in a much more dramatic fashion. The metal on the stairs appears to be rendered incorrectly, it's not very shiny and the light source seems haphazard. There are stripes on the stairs that you haven't adjusted the colour of it to be falling under the light. There doesn't seem to be any sort of depth to the image as all the stairs and background is lit in the same way, you could use some cinematic lighting. There doesn't appear to be much value shift to the skin, it appears too flat. The lighting on the nose isn't strong enough and is the wrong value and colour.

The tights seem to be curling in on themselves. The light is weird and on the side. It should be probably much stronger on top but fall off more and maybe be more clearly defined as both the halo exists and the environment light from the top.

An issue with the gun light. Again, it wants to be lit from the top or the right side and not the left side.

The walls are too light. Idk how to fix this.

In general lot of the parts of this image just scream /int/ to me. There is a lack of understanding of realism/light/shadow. If I knew how to fix it I wouldn't be permastuck in /int/ forever. I think the only way to get the correct answer is mocking up the whole thing in 3D which takes me forever I guess, change her halo and wings to be an emissive area light, change all the metal parts to use metal shaders, cloth to cloth, skin to skin and then shine a light down from on top... I watched a fanart arknight speedpaint and it was 90% 3D with some painting over the top.

It's because everything wasn't drawn as a coherent piece and everything is slapped together haphazardly. Like the belt on an already rendered jacket with little to no regard on how it affects it.

The background in particular has elements that that drawn individually makes sense but looked at a whole doesn't fit together and just fails to be a believable location. A previous person commented it made them feel sick and this was the primarily reason.

From the hands and clavicle, disappearing leg to the character that looks like it was just pasted on a background, you can tell the artist focuses on looking good rather than getting a fundamentally working image.

The problem lies deeper than how it's rendered.

I would think it would be really difficult to do without 3D. A lot of artists nowadays get taught 3D skills so so many of their awesome looking pieces just use 3D even if they keep that fact secret in order to stay above the competition. In actual fact, I've found that I don't need to know insane construction using perspective, when the 3D program handles most of it. Perspective is better when you want to get things done quickly but for harder scenes 3D is significantly faster and more accurate. The lighting, the shading, the base colours the 3D program will spoonfeed you as long as you can set it up correctly (which can be... challenging)

Obviously not retard, just think of it as scaffolding to what you want to draw but eventually you stop relying on construction as it's basically intuitive to draw forms without needing to draw loomis mannequins beforehand. Construction is really good for learning but you'll eventually rely more on what you can do without it.

>> No.4973229

Okay, so I'm an /int/ artist (however, I have been learning T5's workflow and learning a lot of 3D and it seems to me that 3D might be enough to take me on the road to pro) so take this with a grain of salt. Construction is, in my opinion, not as important as it might seem for those of us who love rendering and lighting and not so much on the epik poses side of things, but you do need to know it in T5's situation because the artist needs to know where to put the eyes.

And you need construction whenever you want to do 2D art with dynamic fluid poses etc.

T5 also isn't as impressive as the typical anime artist in terms of interesting poses and the like, because of the dependence on 3D. T5 does know how to draw though, as you can see when they sketch out what they want the scene to look like before beginning the 3D.

By the way, the renderer T5 is using in the vid is Octane Renderer iirc, which you can get for free if you're using Blender https://home.otoy.com/render/octane-render/demo/
Octane is really good for that soft lighting look in T5's images. Octane hasn't been cracked in forever, so using the Blender version is the only way of getting it for free (and legally). But I think it needs a real good gpu.

I watched Jama Jurabaev's "Intro to 3D concept design" (it's on cgpeers) and it was by far the most stupid proof and most useful thing I've ever watched. Jama's a great teacher, it's just a shame that there aren't many 3dcoat tutorials (most tutorials are in Blender) so you might get stuck modelling complex things (I literally still don't get how to model stuff like how to divide up a tower into a bunch of rooms). But stuff like bookshelves in 3Dcoat? Just apply draw a rectangle with the cutout tool. Cities? Just use stencils after you've sketched out the shapes in clip studio or photoshop haha.

Jama also has Blender tutorials, but his blender ones seem to not be super beginner friendly.

To learn Marvelous Designer (aka cloth simulation) I watched Lori Griffiths introduction video, the gigantic CG Elves beginner course off cgpeers and a little bit of the flipped normals Marvelous Designer beginner tutorial. Marvelous Designer is probably the most troublesome because I don't know how to sew or anything about fashion for that matter. But cg elves has a tutorial for loads and loads and loads of clothing items so I suppose that's also idiotproof. Don't think Marvelous can model shoes or anime fur though.

Basically all these tutorials etc are aimed at concept artists. Because essentially that T5 anime piece, what it is really, is what's called 3dbashing in concept art and anime slapped on top.

i'm back with another ichika study, bitches. original is https://imgur.com/RlTM9l5

just wanna get it out of the way that if you coom to the girl on the bottom you're officially a fag because she's a guy reincarnated as a girl. the top two are fair game but you might want to keep in mind that they are literally, unironically satan, and also they're all over 1,000 years old and also dead

anyways after these 3 drawings a couple things i've noticed
-ichika has a much better grasp over perspective than i do, most notable in the face
-ichika draws bangs higher than i do. aka, she draws them in the right place and i've been doing it wrong this whole time
-more on the hair: the detail in the way ichika draws hair is more in the sketches/lines as opposed to the detail coming out during rendering. it was a fun challenge
-the way ichika draws eyes is very... realistic, in a sense. at least, they're very grounded in reality. you can easily tell the top part from the bottom part of the eye, did i mention they're actually eye-shaped. for some reason i just see that a lot of people don't draw anime-style eyes that way
-ichika's style overall is very slender. the lines and shapes are very long and thin, and slick. one of the bigger challenges in these redraws was having to erase entire sections because other shapes in the drawing made me notice they were way off.

Artists don't usually share their tricks to be honest. Learn to be a human photocopier and figure out what artists they like and be able to blend multiple images together in your brain to create something new. Like that person probably likes T5 and White Datura/RA Ilium/Alphonse. So their style could be a hybrid of that. And if one of the artists who draws similarly to another artist you go through all the videos and their nip blogs/weibo blogs/pixiv/twitter etc until you find out who they look up to and see if they share progresses. Some artists take students and they'll post their student progresses which will give you hints on what they do to get good. But in that case as109 doesn't have perfect perspective so they're more likely a student than a master.

That entirely depends on what you really want to do in a finish piece, yeah you could focus mostly on the character instead of the background or do both with equal effort, I also had the same problem when I did something with a background but usually the more you’re use it the faster you’ll be at it eventually. That’s why you gotta do tons of studies and drawing to really get the most use of mileage.

Also when you improve you'll find it easier to spot mistakes and how to fix em. So that also takes more time, when you spot more issues and know how to fix them.

You could try trimming down time by taking as many shortcuts and tricks you can possibly do and even go down to only 8h, assuming you have the skills already. Btw can you post some of your work and what your workflow looks like? I’m interested how artists have different approaches to everything. Honestly I would probably give up if I have to spend like more than 24hours or more to a single piece unless I’m really really committed to it

I don't really have a set workflow as I change it whenever I get bored. For example, pic related was me experimenting with T5's workflow. (aka the same steps but with different software).

However, my typical workflow is just sketch in CSP -> flat in CSP (CSP has bucket fill with hole detection) -> paint/colour manip in PS. Or just paint straight up in PS. But I think a lot of the time is spent looking up refs/fixing things overall because I'm pretty dependent on refs.

>>4973812
Well he is some what right as eventually it will go down but that is something you’ll notice after years upon years of drawing/painting and finding new ways to cut it down, I think most of the slow down is either you’re new to the thing you’re painting/drawing and also lack some fundies, but even after that you could also have to contend with yourself doubting and ended up reworking shit over and over again.

3D's kinda fun even if it is quite soulless and time consuming. It's a little impractical I think because one of my first forays into it basically doubled the amount of time I normally take. So it's probably better reserved for things that you really want to end up looking good. I think the most interesting use of it is as 3D backgrounds in anime, because I saw some guy make an anime in After Effects and the background would spin which makes me suspect that the whole thing is a model (with the animu characters hand drawn of course). However, anime is probably too big of an undertaking and I've given up every time I've tried (especially as poses/gestures/imagination is my major weakness)

This is my "other style".

That is certainly jarring to see desu, i do bit use some 3d, but it’s much simpler because I use sketchup instead for the background, but I usually try to sketch it out initially so I got a general idea.
Mind you i rarely finished anything as I am stuck in sketch/study hell where I never finish anything and just fucking do studies over and over again.
Pic related is shit I’ve been doing for months now.

>> No.4973838

>>4973832
I did have some aspirations of being a concept artist (but realism is something I never particularly stick to for long).

I honestly think that that initial sketching is something that one has to do. Otherwise it tends to go out of control or it doesn't fit together.

Doing studies over and over again is good mentality to have, though. I find it difficult to drag myself into that sort of mindset. I used to always finished everything so when I first started out, I think it kinda tanked my mileage for sketching, because I did so much turd polishing. But looking back, I think it did help with the rendering etc.

Yeah, environments take time. They can sometimes be frustrating to get right (and/or take multiple attempts). Something that helps me with environments is to collect multiple refs of the sort of thing that I want to draw before I start, especially if I can see the steps that the artist took starting out (their blockout)

>> No.4973847 [DELETED]

>>4973838
I don’t really have any issues with environments unless I have to detail them also but the thing is if they’re not the focus of what you’re painting, why bother? You could be loose with it and take some artistic liberties instead of autistic polishing shit that isn’t important.
I think finding a good balance is the key to that.

I like your style. If you normally draw like this, all I'd recommend is try to clean up your linework, but that'll come naturally as you keep drawing more and more. I think it's good to remember that sometimes it's the small details that sell a (well composited, otherwise good) artwork.
People who don't know much about art will of course appreciate your sense of form and your style, but what really gets them is a sense of completeness and those little Easter eggs. Godspeed
