IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

POST DRAWINGS YOU NEED HELP WITH

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

1.-screenshot the image and post that instead

2.-change camera capture settings to something smaller

3.-send to computer and resize in picresize.com

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

Take your time, you can do it.

Big whoop, join the club. Fundamental skills tend to be things you can judge rather objectively as long as there's no deliberate stylization; you'll know when you're getting good enough that you feel comfortable drawing things. Either way, just draw anyways. I get that you'll get a feeling of "wahhhh this isn't how I wanted it to turn out wahhhh" but what helps me get over that lately is saying in my head before I start "I am going to fill this page/canvas with drawings that I will never show anybody" and it takes a lot of the pressure off. >> No.4964137

i just woke up from the best dream i ever had in my life. i got to relive my first day of pre school. every moment was a wave or seratonin and nostalgia. everything was magical like willy wonka, and in the end my family was all there, my cousins and immediate family, and i gave everyone a kiss and told them i love them.

i felt like i died. like my life had a neat little bow on it and i could go peacefully.but then i woke up and went on 4chan. and now im looking at this dark face. and i have work in 4 hours.

do you mean something feels more stressful about it?
if its more stressful and you are fine with the other option (traditional) just do traditional

>> No.4964142

>>4964136
No. In fact you can practice in digital to improve your skills with traditional. For example trying to fuck around with vanishing points and perspectives and having your lines be in layers so you can easily see what the fucks going on. Ironically gitting gud at traditional drawing also makes you a better digital artist in some ways.

studying fundamentals is a huge task. I keep hearing focused study? what is that? what is an example of an actual focused study?

So far I've just been feverishly drawing gestures and boxes.
I use construction too.

I'm a bit neurotic so I worry about picking up bad habits or learning something incorrectly...

especially since I have really bad ADD which makes it so that study time is incredibly mentally draining, so I don't want to waste it learning something that's going to hurt me in the long run.

The advantage of ADD is that I cannot sit still, so it is easy for me to furiously draw gestures and find that the whole day flew by.

That is correct. Line weight will help the eyes. Use the lines thinnest and thickest spots to convey a curved surface for the eyes. So if you erase some of the thickness on the line under the middle of the eye, and on the top erase some of the middle and edge of the eyes closest to the center of the face, they will pop more. Their right eye top line is perfect because it conveys a curve by thinning to the end closest to the nose. That shows the way eyelashes lay so you can't see them gradually across the eye. Also never neglect to put a shine spot. Shinny eyes = instant soul. Also remember tilted eyes are about as real as the sideways vagina European sailors used to swear Asians had.

Okay so I've been sketching on a notebook thats probably like 4x6. Many of the problems I've been having apperently stem from the fact that I don't have enough space or the fine motor skill for it. I tried drawing on a tablet and the work (while still shit and beg) finally had the level of detail I expected because I was able to zoom in on parts I wanted. Like an eye is no longer three 2mm long pen strokes, now an eye can be multiple 6 inch strokes because I can zoom in on it.

If you're not a turbosperg classical artist who's determined to do shit the hard way, try Carbon pencils. They're pretty much halfway between charcoal and graphite and my personal favorite drawing medium. They produce silky smooth lines and deep, dark blacks just like charcoal while not being so brittle. They smudge just like charcoal as well, so you can get some very soft tonal effects if that's what you're going for. It's really good stuff. Underrated.

I don't recommend attempting to accurately render something until you've mastered (mastered, mind you) the fundamentals. Until you get to that level, you can still use photographs, but just to get an idea for a pose, not to copy. In my opinion, your drawing should be 90%+ from imagination and only really "inspired" by the reference material. You should be completely able and comfortable drawing skillfully from imagination before all else. Once you'd completely mastered the basics though, then it's okay to start worrying about accuracy if that's what you want to do. I know that there are certain artists, mostly illustrators, who might claim the opposite, and that's why their work always looks flat and simply lacking in comparison to the true old masters.

TLDR; Yes, you're wasting your time trying to copy.

this is for ground textures in a game

You can't really do that in a vacuum. You need to know what the context of the situation is I think. The best context-free example I can think is Valve creating 2 layered textures. So grass to dirt would have grass ontop and dirt on the bottom. It would look like grass at first, then the map makers could effectively paint the transition part by using a brush that would add transparency to the top layer. This is getting into shaders and all that now.

well that part makes sense
if I could have unlimited textures, and make them as big as I want to avoid repetition, I could make my game look as good as I want

but all game assets end up on texture pages, which must be swapped in and out as graphics are drawn, and too many swaps will lag and crash the game
and there is an upper limit to how much you can fit in video memory too

and the ground textures are only a small part of the overall graphics (there are buildings, trees, character animations, etc)
so I am left totally confused about how many ground textures I can safely draw and how big they can be, without lagging the game or not leaving enough space in video memory for all the other art assets

>> No.4966173

>>4966149
It sounds like you're brute forcing the problem. You just take a picture of grass. Mirror it horizontally, then take that and mirror it vertically. Then you have a seamless repeating texture. Photoshop probably also has tools to do it better. There has to be countless guides on it, this is like step 1 of making a game. You don't need an infinitely sized texture, and there are better ways to create the illusion of such a thing through shaders.

the scaling and proportions of the characters are so strange that the girl on the left looks like a giant child with tits rather than a waifu, also the foreshortening isn't exaggerated enough to be believable

The big changes I made where to most done to the girl on the left. I shrunk the head since they were absolutely massive (mainly the pigtail girl on the left but alittle on the right as well) pushed the hand and feet forshortening more exgerated to make it feel more 3dimensional, lenghtening the shins since they felt too short for the characters. and scale up the girls overall size on the right since she's leading the girl in back so get a sense of implied perspective. not a bad picture overall ( I would push pigtail knee out futher but i need sleep). My best advice to you is make sure you're flipping your canvas and taking breaks often so you can catch yourself making mistaskes in real time and revist anime propotions because at the 4.0- 4.5 figures youve drawn is far too stumpy and kid like for the bodies you drew.

Could it have looked better? Could the pose be more interesting? Could I have worked i this longer? Could the design look better? Could anything I’ve studied so far actually been used for this? All Yes but I’ve been so exhausted and my hand hurts so this was something lite and quick. Whatever it doesn’t matter

I dunno about this, he says not to use a reference, but then the first image you draw pretty much becomes your reference. Wouldn't it be better to try and draw the same reference 20 times than just trying to arbitrarily decide if your heads are better or worse?

i think your critiques are good but this was ike the 4th draft of this i posted. had you said it before i spent hours cleaning up the linework i would try to fix some of that, but i have to move on. im not redoing it all again. Just wanted to say thanks and I'll try to keep tangents like that in mind on my next drawing.

The face is great and your rendering is very very nice. The piece feels very unfinished tough you did not render shadows on the clothing in many places. Also a lot of the curves on bracelets, collars, stockings, belt etc. feel flat they need to actually go around the body's form to look like they are actually covering the shape. As other Anon mentioned it some more accurate anatomy can help ,especially on the midriff area and shoulders and the light sources could be a e bit better defined that will immediately help the form.

Keep it up your rendering is great.
