IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

POST DRAWINGS YOU NEED HELP WITH

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

1.-screenshot the image and post that instead

2.-change camera capture settings to something smaller

3.-send to computer and resize in picresize.com

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

Take your time, you can do it.

>Does digital hide fundie mistakes just like if someone started playing guitar on electric as opposed to acoustic?
Someone who is shit is going to sound like shit whether it's electric or acoustic, in fact the electric mistakes will be much louder and more embarrassing. Similarly, the mistakes on digital will be much easier to spot, so in many ways beginner digital artists have a lot more to overcome once they're actually drawing, but it's balanced by it being easier to get into it and actually practice.
Who told you that bullshit about guitar?

The bullshit about guitar was from person experience and experimentation. I've found that unless you own a rather expensive set up and have the cleanest tone, electric (and all its subsequent reverb, fuzz, overdrive pedals) electric is going to cover up how poor someone's guitar fundamentals are. Electric strings both as a type and their gauge are lighter and necks can be smaller (as well as the bodies) all of these things lead to acoustic showing off the audio flaws of someone's technique far more than if someone picked up an electric guitar. A barre chord on acoustic is going to be a muted mess, but if the gain on mids is maxed on an amp with a fuzz on top, sometimes that doesn't come through the mix.

I've been playing guitar for 14 years and what you posted is a massive cope lol. Some people sometimes try to make up for sloppy play with wah pedals, that's about it. You must have some sort of skill underneath to successfully approach decent sound. Acoustic just requires more force and pressure due to higher gauge / tension differences, it's easier to play an electric guitar, that's why people get so butthurt. I play both. If you're shit you're shit it's not the fault of someone who preferred to avoid arthritis

I play both. I practice both. I'm past that point, but when I was beginning I'd avoid acoustic. I've had some friends in the local scene who cope with electric because its easier. I am probably retarded anon. I agree with you two. Now I basically only play acoustic because I'm too lazy to set anything up.

I will check that out anon! Here's another one I just did right after the karate lady waiting for your reply and then got carried away feeling the need to finish it. This one was by mind, no reference (other than all the athenas I've looked at in the past few weeks) but still had karate lady in my mind I guess. Part of the reason I've gotten back into drawing is that I had a big test and had a dream where I promised athena I'd draw her every day if she helped me pass the test. Means I'll have to do it every day til december to find out if I passed.

I'm just making a point, I don't think western animation is bad. There are good examples
Like ed edd n eddy, or samurai jack, and many more
I'm just saying that thinking "anime is bad because it's simple" is a small pp move
Of course it's simple. It's ANIMation xD
There's nothing animated in the west that even comes close to Akira btw xd

How long should I focus on perspective and still life before learning figure drawing and anatomy? Anon you can put your reference on a layer, make it transparent and resize it on top of your drawing to check for accuracy. With that in mind, don't wait "til you're ready" to draw figures since you can just check them. Make sure to break them down into forms instead of only copying the lines you see otherwise you won't learn much other than how to copy. Good luck anon

That's a lotta drawin', son. I respect the grind. It's good that you're pausing and reflecting on your progress. Firstly, 10 days is not much time. It's practically nothing when it comes to overall art improvement. Secondly, it looks like you're hopping between perspective and figure drawing a bit, and in both categories you're going for quantity over quality. Do you feel mentally burned out after doing these? It doesn't look like you're really pushing yourself to understand new concepts. It looks more like you're just trying to draw as much as possible. If you do that you're just reinforcing the same drawing habits. Like a martial artist quickly performing 1000 haphazard moves, in comparison to one who performs a single move slowly and with complete awareness, each time adjusting it and understanding the minor details.

Rather than a bazillion unfocused sketches, just do around 5 REALLY focused ones everyday. You can do more, but each one should be taken slowly. You should be spending more time thinking about the stroke you're about to make than drawing itself. Speed comes with confidence, confidence comes after gaining knowledge and experience.

So when you're doing figure drawing, one day you would focus PURELY on understanding form. Do cross-contour lines, shading, form simplification.
The next day you might focus PURELY on gesture. What makes a pose look dynamic? Balanced? Stiff? How do I exaggerate?
The same goes for proportion and anatomy. And every other aspect of art. It's trying to break into a safe with wild hammer strikes, vs a single, well placed thermite charge. Or defeating 100 shitty LVL 1 enemies by tapping the X button, vs strategically taking down a final boss.

This is a collage of figure drawing I did one day. You can see me warming up my form and perspective knowledge with the rotating cubes and simple forms. Then I moved onto 30 second figure drawing warmups which are more gesture-oriented. There's a lot of those because I was doing them quickly. Then there's some more polished sketches. The dude sitting down in the top right is a focused sketch from imagination. I tried to make sure I used perspective and anatomy correctly based on my knowledge. Then there are some cleaner poses which were actually from reference clothed models. In the top right you can see a study of the shoulder girdle anatomy copied from Morpho (anatomy book).

This is a focused sketch I did for ahmed's fall fashion challenge. My painting ability all round is much worse than my drawing ability, so I have been doing at least a few of these every week and really trying to get better at value/colour recognition and using layers effectively. A short one takes maybe an hour of work, while a more polished one takes up to 3h+. I stop when I find myself not struggling anymore, and just copying details. The goal isn't to make a pretty picture or churn out a ton of art, but just to mentally struggle for a necessary amount of time with something I'm not good at.

Everyone goes through that phase and most dynamic sketching teachers encourage just filling up entire pages with drawings. I'm just speaking from personal experience about what has worked for me. My slower approach now is based on me observing what painters I like do. Even if you're not asking these questions, you're probably noticing them. Only you can tell how effective a studying method is for you.The benefit of going through a course/textbook is that it asks and answers stuff like this for you. For the question "How do I get proportions right?" Loomis answers with the 8 head system. Robert Beverly Hale answers with the cranial unit system. Krenz Cushart answers with the block-unit system. "What the fuck is 'gesture'?" Loomis answers with the spine and the general flow of the limbs. Michael Mattesi answers with a representation of the forces applied by gravity and movement. There is no definitive right answer. No best teacher or method. Only what works best for you, which you'll find eventually if keep looking.

Your ears are far too far back. The back of the skull goes behind the ear and connects to the neck. The ear is level with the nose, the top of the ear should be on the same plane as the top of the nose and ditto with the bottoms.

You also need to stop symbol drawing - draw what's there and not what you think it looks like. This goes for the face was well as the construction, don't rush it. Take time and evaluate the shapes and how they fit.

People keep saying this but I still dont understand what a symbol is. What differentiates a symbol eye to a regular eye? It says that symbol drawing is what you draw from imagination, but isnt being able to draw from imagination (instead of reference) an ideal scenario? And why does it look bad in the first place?

Here's a particularly egregious example I just whipped up in paint with a mouse, apologies for the poor quality.

Symbol drawing is when you draw the idea of an object rather than what it looks like. It mainly stems from cartoons/anime or comics/manga. The original artist has understood proper anatomy and has skewed and distorted it to create a unique art style. This can be to aid in expressiveness (Big eyes are an obvious example) or to communicate subtext (People who are huge/tiny). The issue comes from when non-artists try to copy the skewed versions that they've learnt instead of learning what it ACTUALLY looks like. Hence the name, symbol. It's a hard habit to break, and the only advice I can really give is to forget everything you think you know about drawing.

In my example here, I didn't construct anything, nor plan or think about where things go. There was no planning on where the features went, nor how the head would connect to the body. All of the features are cartoonish and simplified versions. The issue with symbol drawing is when you think you know how to draw, when you don't. Break down the face into segments, and break the segments down into shapes. Once you understand the fundamentals you can distort them to create stylized work.

tl;dr, forget everything you think you know. Anyone else feel free to reply to this post if you think I'm talking shit or are wrong about anything - I'm still learning too.

>> No.4962785

>>4962767
Symbol drawing is using your analytical mind to find the representation of an idea. It’s the difference between a child’s drawing of a cat being a circle with triangle ears and dots for eyes and an actual fully detailed drawing of a cat. Your indoctrination into the human race and the concept of language has poisoned your ability to see things beyond the symbol you attribute to it. Everyone knows what a tree is, everyone has a platonic idea of a tree in their mind. But when you go to draw a tree your mind fills in the gaps because it doesn’t see past the concept and idea of tree. So instead of drawing every bend and crack in the bark, you just draw scales rapidly without caring that every chunk of bark bends and twists in its own unique way. The same thing happens with the aspects of a face. I could just draw an emoji, and you would see it as a face. But an eye is far more than a circle and a dot.

I'm thinking of drawing doujin porn in order to make some pocket money in this 3rd world shithole, but I've only studied realistic stuff like a purist piece of shit.

Question 1, can I make 500~ US$ month if I get somewhat solid on this anime shit.
Question 2, where do I learn anime drawing ?

I speak Japanese and English, so I'm open to all resources. Thank you.

Trying to draw Chino again after obsessively looking a tutorials, trying to copy other's art and using all of my power to do this again.

What did I do wrong and what do I need to do to fix it?
