But so the paper doesn't warp and start to break apart, I use just some mixed arts crap that I picked up because it looked thick and smoothish. Idk if it'll look better on higher quality paper, or if it looks fine as it is, as I never used it.

Get paper that's specifically made for watercolor. Mixed Media is a nice idea in theory, but in practice these types of papers are often just bad for everything.
300gsm/140lb is the standard weight for watercolor paper, it can still warp a little so you can either tape it down with painters or washi tape, clamp it to a board, buy a block that's glued on all four sides (use a palette knife to remove the painting when finished), or go for even heavier paper.

Cold press has a slight texture and is the most popular paper. Cheaper papers often only come in cold press.
Hot press is smoother and can be better if you want to do a lot of inking too, but is harder to find and higher quality hot press papers (100% cotton) handle very differently when painting. Some people really struggle with that so it's generally not recommended for beginners. (More prone to creating hard edges, harder or downright impossible to lift paint to correct mistakes, etc.)

Paper quality in general is a... controversial subject. Cotton paper is much more pleasant to paint on than "regular" watercolor paper. A lot of people feel that trying to learn on anything else is a waste of time since you're just making things difficult for yourself - but you're paying a lot more money for that ease of use. You can get decent results on more affordable watercolor papers too - but it takes more practice.

Brian can paint though, he just doesn't give a fuck. Only an idiot takes a month to do something which can be done in a week. An idiot, or a lazy person.
The most common reason for why people take so much time with painting is not that it's required. They're just unsure, procrastinating, afraid to finish something, not in the mood, focus on textural bullshit, always choose the laborious but easy route. Taking more time to do something doesn't necessarily make it any better either, better just fix your mistakes in the second painting.

Hey guys, I need help !
I’m starting to get into acrylics and it’s quite frustrating since I don’t really know what I’m doing
Like how do I make a color darker/lighter without it getting muddy, ?
how can I reproduce an exact color from a picture or my imagination ?
How do I add light on something already painted ? Adding white just makes a grey thing that doesn’t look natural
Thank to anyone that takes the time to answer :)

Strange composition, that figure on the left draws the eye more than the saint, and also is better drawn. It is quite detailed, which contrasts with the rest of the background, like why is that bow just hanging in the air? I'd say this could be fixed if you filled the whole background with equally busy and intricate figures, only leaving the saint's body in pure white. That way he would stand out. Also, while the linework is nice, the his jaw and chest seem a bit off.

The tree actually had a pretty uniform "color" throughout the time when I was painting, I wanted to simplify it for ease of time. but I get what you're saying about how flat it looks. It was also the darkest value in the scene, so I dont want to particularly give it a wider value range for the sake of depth.
Pic related, is ref. Not 100% accurate since I took it when I was done for the day. might be easier to crit with it.

Great job anon, if you continue with plein air you will see gains so fast you'll hardly believe it. couple comments: Look for the gradient and temperature of the sky. It gets extremely light and is hardly even blue anymore at the horizon. When you do the sky holes through a tree, make sure you get a good mix of sizes. Make sure they correspond to sky gradient behind. Use a clean brush and plenty of paint.

I'm about to try oils for the first time, as I have an unused beginners kit. There's a wooden palette included, but I'm not sure how to clean it after I'm done. Is it better to use some other surface as palette?

Also, how dangerous is the white spirit paint medium to breathe?

>> No.4984707

>>4984689
I just scrap off paint with a palette knife, save what i can, then wipe down the palette with the paper towel i use to clean my brush. don't use soap, water, solvents or anything. You eventually end up with a smoother, neutral gray surface which is better to mix on. also mineral spirits are a solvent, not a medium. just keep a window open, if there isn't enough ventilation, you'll know because you have a headache.

>> No.4984708

>>4984689
Make sure to work in a well ventilated area with oils. Even if it doesn't have a strong smell.
Glass is good for palettes, it's very easy to clean but wood is fine though, it's commonly used as palette.

>> No.4984711

>>4984689
Wooden palettes are lightweight, and are good for traveling. Most have holes you can use to hold it in your hand. The thing abt them tho is its recommended you clean them right after use, or else they'll be chunks of dry paint stuck on the surface of it, fucking up ur mixing surface.
Glass palettes I tend to use more in studio settings. They're easier to clean (scraping dry/wet paint with a razor does the trick) but they're heavy and not very portable. U can store these in a sta-wet box to keep the oils from getting dry too quickly. there are glass tinted options to help you mix paint as well.
The type of palette you use depends on your preference.

As for the solvent, I'd recommend gamsol. it's the least toxic type i think, I've only ever used gamsol so I cant speak for how toxic other spirits are.

I would recommend getting thinner/solvent before attempting to painting. Using raw paint as an under painting will mix in with the actual colors you put down on the canvas. With thinner it's less likely for that to happen.

Don't be afraid of making shit paintings, you learn from that, there are no shortcuts.

I'm glad you like the Dragon so much, since it's the focal point of the piece, but the reason the rest of the image is rough and sketchy is that it is just the initial watercolor pencil pass that I used to lay out the color and shade. Right now I'm rendering the details in gouache, working from left to right (more or less). So part of the image is much more cleaned up than the rest.

this to a certain extent, there's certain ways to coax paint into doing what digital brushes do but for the most part you'll never have your "tree brush" and your "rock brush" and your "leaf brush", you'll have to paint all of those things manually.

No that's extremely common. In fact some artists will paint a blue sky base ahead of time and let it dry so they can just paint over it in the field.

Of course that only works if you're going to be painting at the same time of day, in the same type of weather, that you prepped the canvas for.

That’s not entirely accurate. You can use a light toned layer and day of painting get closer to the actual colors. Or depending on the effect you want, a warm toned canvas can make dawn/dusk sunlight on clouds pop. You just have to know the transparency of the paint you’re using and other properties. He does it in water based media but James Gurney uses pre toned light effects in cool ways.

Need to work on proportions. You have a nice play with values and edges. However, you still need a lot of work on your values. For example, your eyes look dead because you didn't put in the specular highlights.

Your values aren't bad, but you need to work more on your edge control, especially around the eyes. It's like you're mixing a comic-style looking face onto a realistic portrait. Overall not bad.
