4953520 No.4953520 [Reply] [Original]

>find beautiful photos (landscapes usually) on the internet and run them through an an online paint filter effect, turning it into a painting
>put my signature and date in a corner
>print out large prints of these photos
>visit local businesses (banks, offices, hotels) and offer to sell them my "paintings"
>they almost always buy one to support a local small artist, one hotel bought 20 for a bundle price
Bros..on average I make $90 a print, and each "painting" only takes an hour to do (I make some edits after the paint filter). The most popular one I've sold over 20 of and I've only been doing this for a month. Am I a scammer or a modern artist?

>> No.4953531

A scammer, and you know it, hence the thread. You’re not selling filtered photos (which you can’t do legally anyway, most likely), you’re selling “paintings from a small local artist”.
Not that I’m judging, but why shit up the board when you know the answer to your retarded question?

>> No.4953535

I make sufficient changes to the photos (lighting, adding new strokes) that they're not just filtered photos. So yes it is a painting from a local artist, I'm just curious to see what the reaction from other artists are. These people don't care about the process, they just want nice paintings for their walls.

You're selling something they like. Whatever their reasons for buying, that's none of your business. These pics are mass produced and then sold at IKEA and similar places for an outrageous price so I guess you offer them a good deal and they think they're doing good too

In 2010 I came across a guy renting booths at events, craft shows, fairs selling digital paintings of peoples dogs in Martini glasses. He called them digital paintings. He would then charge them $700+. He told me it took him 30 minutes to make them. He cut and paste the dog into a stock image of a Martini glass or wine glass, then applied a paint filter to it and then added a signature in the corner.

He'd then sell about 12 of them every weekend. Since he worked almost every weekend doing this, let's just guess 50 weeks per a year, total. He probably made around $700x12 piecesx50weeks=$420,000 for the year, pre taxes, without subtracting booth rental costs and canvas printing costs.

If you have no shame and have a marketable idea, there is lots of money to be made. Most art professors would gufaw at this and act like c**ts. But this is because they're crabs and only make $30k a year.

The guy's art looked similar to the attached picture.

No, you're probably normal. It's just most people don't think like the fat cat business men, which appears immoral but is actually normal capitalism. I think we assume from packaging and branding that many things are very valuable when in reality they cost 4% of the selling price to make. E.g. You buy a frying pan for $25, production cost and importation fees only cost the manufacturer $2.8 each. It's all a big charade. I'm sure the people who got their dog in a Martini glass art thought their was more to the art process, but there wasn't. It was 30 minutes plug and chug. I'm sure people on fiverr could do it now for $5, lol.
