While I think that the doodling can pull you up a bit, I think that almost all of us had our biggest growth spurt directly after studying things consciously and being unashamed of riffing off references and specific courses and techniques as well as finding the correct approach by doing master copies etc

i have hundreds upon hundreds of traditional sketchbook pages that nobody has ever seen. even after going digital i won't bother posting everything, much less the boring gestures and bad quickstudies.

but you're right in saying you shouldn't always be drawing outside of your comfort zone. but you do need to push it bit by bit.

A few times in the last years I argued with someone and they told me very aggressively to post work. I posted my work immediately and they vanished. Another time someone attacked the genre/subject of the drawing instead of the skill level and then they vanished when I told them to post their own work.
I only remember asking people to post a sample of their work (though not aggressively) when I was unsure about my own skill level, so I needed confirmation because I feared I would be mislead. Right now I can tell if someone knows what they're saying so I never feel like asking for samples, so I'm pretty sure that PYW most likely means you're talking to a /beg/.

My theory is /int/+ artists spend years just drawing and building skills that aren’t immediately visible in this early work until they eventually study fundies and see a huge jump in their quality and think to themselves "wow! Hand/Eye coordination and sophistication but more than that the development of a "just draw" mind state that has minimal interference from judgement while drawing. I think of it like the difference between someone thinking "I’m drawing" versus "I’m drawing well/bad(?)". I firmly believe the mind of doing something is distinct from the mind of judging something. Judgement hinders your ability to perform. As a /beg/, you’re primarily training your ability to perform the act of drawing.
