Is this enough to go pro:
>Vilppu
>Hornung
>Robertson
>Framed Ink

>> No.4947211

No, you need to draw

>> No.4947219

Yes I t is! Study those guys and you can do it bro! Now get in there, download those books, and get drawing!

You need a PORTFOLIO

Will I improve faster if I buy them instead of downloading?

It's hard to say. I definitely prefer having physical copies, and I also prefer doing all my studies traditionally i.e. on paper with pen/pencil. Having distinct pages and not an endlessly scrolling PDF makes it much easier to break down for me.

/ic/ will tell you Vilppu has everything you need for figure drawing, but he actually has a few weaknesses that will drive /beg/s crazy like how he teaches gesture.
Learn quick sketch and head fundamentals from Watts and read Mattesi's Force books so you avoid Vilppu's common /beg/ traps. Once you do that Vilppu is much more manageable, but you could just continue Watts instead.
Also read Framed Perspective before How to Draw.

I personally liked Steve Huston's lessons over Vilppu, but to each their own. Best of luck, OP

How do you expect to go anywhere by following a blueprint?

definitely considering Huston's painting lessons on nma, but I'm already deep into Vilppu for drawing

>>4947348
Mattesi's helped me a lot, but I'm really intimidated by colors, especially painting figures and skin tones. Would Hornung be good for that, or should I get Alla Prima?

>>4947294
For painting, would traditional paints be easier than digital? I know Hornung really advocates learning color by color mixing, but cmyk sliders seem to teach color mixing just as well, idk

Painting only really made sense to me after I'd tried doing it traditionally. I'd recommend using acryilcs since they're cheap, easy to clean up after, can be thick, and dry quickly.

It's vague and it's very difficult for someone to critique their own gesture if they follow Vilppu. The Reilly abstraction taught at Watts is much, much easier for self-critique using comparative measurement and negative shapes. Of course, the Reilly abstraction is more useful for drawing the rhythms of the body than it is for understanding squash and stretch/force which is why you should study Matessi too.

he's got a whole chapter/lecture on measuring proportions, angles, checking negative shapes, etc. and another on anatomical landmarks to help with it. or am i missing something?

i feel like the main pitfall with vilppu is just the way it's structured, people would almost be better off going through his lessons/chapters in reverse order.
