Big shapes -> small: by this I mean always try to see the general relationship of an abstract, simplified version of the subject. Example: when drawing the head, begin with a large mass of the cranium, instead of jumping into details like the eyes. If the figure will be placed in perspective, learning to abstract the forms into larger simpler geometry will help in plotting them in 3D on the 3 axis. The simplest form for plotting in linear perspective/3D is a box as it’s literally the XYZ axis as a form, so if you can abstract the body to body shapes you will have a much easier time.

Big>small works for all manner of disciplines from sculpting to sight size painting. Bargue’s course teaches a great way of seeing relationships early on by simplifying complex forms into big shapes. Relationships are the keys to harmonious pleasant art, and simplifying is a way to check these relationships without getting confused by details.

Learn anatomy. I tend to follow these rules for arms: the elbow must reach the waist and the hand must reach a bit under the crotch. For legs: the knee, if bent, should be able to hit the chest, as for the feet I just calculate with my eye.

I think he's trying to say that light gets usually absorbed or scattered by any given surface, but if you turn it parallel to your line of sight, there's gonna be light that's gonna bounce off of the surface perfectly instead of scattering or being absorbed, hence why, close to the edges (where the planes of the forms become parallel), you can see a bit of shine. No idea why it's called fresnel, though.

It's from a "how to draw manga" book by peter gray. Back in the early 2000s there was a wave of these books bring released by people that had no idea what they were doing. Most anime doesn't and is completely flat in stills, relying on animation to convey depth and form, which the average /beg/ can't recognize. To find anime that does a good job of conveying these things in stills, you already need to understand them to a degree to recognize them. Unless it's a purely stylistic decision. The western "look" is more realistic, sure, but if you're actually going for that weeb style, little things like that will tip the viewer off that the artist was trained in a more western way and break the illusion. It's one of the reasons you can tell the art in something like Korra apart from actual anime.

Lmao, japanese artist also have learned this approach, it's just the classical atelier way of simplifying visual information. It basically is simplifying curves into straights for your mind to process easier, once you get those relations down, you can add the complexity of the curves. It's not about style, it's a beginner thing, it's meant to train you to develop proper perception. Btw you can't learn to draw manga without having adequate perceptual skills. Some people are talented and just have it, there are many ways to train it as well. This is just one of the proven ways that a lot of artists have gone through.
