I think Repin is my current favorite painter. Not everybody likes realism or the academically inclined stuff, but his paintings are just injected with so much life and personality that it is hard not to admire the staggering level of knowledge and craft in the execution.

no more staggering than the knowledge and craft that went into his contemporaries in France doing Impressionism

This is my favorite Bouguereau piece - but this is the largest image I've ever found of it (I made a 4x AI upscaled one in Gigapixel, but it has a lot of artifacting obviously).

The original is apparently in a museum in Cuba. Sometimes I think about hiring a Cuban photographer to go take a top notch large scale image of it and send it to me, but I don't know how feasible it is.

Risking being called basic, I really like the lily pond drawings from Claude Monet. I have no education in art history and normally don't react on art myself, but I saw a big print of one of them in a museum entry hall once and I felt "home(?)" looking at it (you probably know what I'm trying to say; the way he drew makes you feel like you're remembering going for a walk in a french park).

Not sure if it's an appropriate place to ask but does anyone know where I can get more Gustave Dore's works in high res? Most of the stuff I get is blurry mess.

the originator of both abstract art and surrealism, correct? something about his landscapes felt both surreal and abstract iirc.
