well, they don't look stiff, it's more that the eyes are floating, yes, the limbs are disproportionate and don't match with each other, and they're just not correct

you have some leeway with stylization but it's clear that you're just guessing and don't really have a feel for what goes where

Make sure your characters have the same perspective as the environment. Fix some of the anatomy. Use the soft brush less. You're well on the way. People and faces probably is the hardest thing to draw well.

Also. New sketch, i'm not sure about dynamic poses from my head. It looks ok now but it might look retarded when i start rendering it.

Is that Edward? The face looks good. You probably wouldn't get that angle unless the body is in profile view (try it for yourself) so you could either change the body or draw a 3/4 view face

I like the drawing aspect. How bold it is. The colors are too wild though imo. There is so much contrast everywhere it becomes hard to appreciate the drawing. Even if you're going for a calarts kind of style, the colors and lineweight could use more hierarchy. Check out James Jean's sketchbook pages if you haven't already. It has a lot of superposing drawings and all but it still reads well.

>>4930415
I really like the colors and composition. I think the darks on the left are too dark and distracting. You could lower the contrast and edges of the red-ish thing to make it recede like it should. Also the hard edge of the shadow on the right is distracting too. Nice study overall though.

>>4930525

It's difficult to say. There are plenty of things that are great. It's well drawn, very expressive, well stylised.
I think the background being the same hue and value as the character makes the silhouette less strong. Also there is so much saturated red in the clothes and lines that the blood doesn't pop as much as it could. Value wise there isn't a clear area of focus. Some darker accents in focal areas might help.

I assume your layers are well organised so you might try to make a few variations with hues and values and see if there are interesting results.

Ty. For some reason i never get very satisfied with the results i get. Maybe it's a mindset thing.

resize your images before you upload them next time.
As for the work itself, I think your primary issue is decisiveness. Your edges lack precision, your value choices seem haphazard and unconsidered, and the work overall reads as messy.

If you're going to work with ink, I would invest in some better brushes of varying shapes, and I would advise you to be more patient with your work. It's impossible to get a hard edge with ink if you're putting down wet ink on to wet ink.

Get some larger brushes so that you can easily create a value plane in one or two brush strokes.

Look at Benjamin Bjorklund, Kathe Kollwitz, and Nick Runge's ink wash drawings.

Decided to give up on this one, I spent too much time correcting mistakes when I could've just worked smarter.
My values are inconsistent and my shading technique is shit.
Still don't know how to pick the right graphite grades for my values, which is why my shadows came out way too dark here.
Hopefully it will be better next time.

Ok retake on the Dune stillsuit. But can someone please for the love of god help me with my fuckign technique. Rendering faces is such a pain in digital, i have no idea how to go about it without endless pixel pushing. I see people paint amazing faces with 20 brush strokes that reads super well. Doing that seems completely fucking impossible in photoshop.

I feel you. Digital is definitely very satisfying when finished. Its super clean and the ability to edit on the fly is a huge plus. Trad to me is the most important thing though. You have to be afraid of making mistakes I think, which digital just doesn't have.

I'm definitely not shit talking digital though. I love it for refined work (pic not necessarily related) this one was actually a trad work done in fine liner that I scanned and coloured so it's a bit messy.

What programs do you use?

Yeah thats one of the things I found enjoyable about ballpoints when I was doing trad. Theres no erasing, whatever you put down is what you're stuck with, good or bad. Which is somewhat liberating, while also forcing you to put a bit more thought into each line. Also there was just something satisfying about the smooth inky lines that a ballpoint makes.

Unfortunately for me 90% of my digital work goes on unfinished. The ability to infinity erase, undo, and edit is my undoing.

I've bounced around between Clip Studio and Photoshop over the past two years or so. Been leaning a bit towards CSP recently.

polishing a turd tier.
This can be avoided by blocking in the values at the construction phase and make a decision right then and there which values the shadows, midtones, and highlights will have.
I can see just by looking at the guy's face the hours you've spent erasing, redoing, lightening, darkening the tones of the skin.
Having an organized, clearly defined work order will save you all this trouble and will force you to work more efficiently.

this is my first time doing value study, honestly i watched David Merritt digital painting, and I'm still confused obviously i can't get proportions 1:1, also i just can't make the details of the face, clothes, I started out with 3 value and then tried add more and soften edges obviously failed miserably.
i only used hard round brush and adjusted the flow to soften edges

I appreciate the honesty. Everything is a learning experience. At the stage where you block in the values, should i use a 100% opacity brush to avoid the clusterfuck with brush stroke banding? I think you're on the right track. One thing I notice is with some of your lights you seem to be making them too bright - when they should be subtle (the lights facing the walls for instance, the light hitting the face from below). Try grouping your darks and lights into shapes. The background should almost be entirely dark with only a few hints of light grey - with the only source of light coming from the window. It can be tempting to want to paint what you think you see, but the goal is to paint what is in front of you.

the light on the face comes from underneath, not the side
you also killed the contrast between head and light in the background, try to squint and you'll see how nicely the head contrasts against the backdrop. There's a reason why it was placed there
don't just interpret things literally, think about what the elements mean. That head needs to be a point of high contrast, so make it black
