IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud, Make yourself proud, you can make it if you believe in yourself.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

1.-screenshot the image and post that instead

2.-change camera capture settings to something smaller

3.-send to computer and resize in picresize.com

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Some ground rules to start this thread and the next /beg/ threads off:

>if you are /beg/
Don't ever give advice.
You can relate and share your hardships with other /beg/s, but never give them advice.
If you MUST give advice, start the reply off with "I'm beg, but what worked for me is..."

>Before you post your work
1. Every person giving advice here expects for you to have at least read some of the sticky, and that you already know what you should be doing to improve.
In that light, replies such as "grind more fundamentals" are perfectly viable advice.
We expect you to know what the general fundamentals are (gesture, anatomy, perspective, drapery, etc.), and we expect you to know where you can find resources to practice these subjects.
Sometimes literally the only good advice to give is to practice more and improve your technique.

2. DO NOT post your 5 minute sketches that you didn't put much thought into. If you do post them then make sure to ask for SPECIFIC advice on a specific subject.
If you post a doodle and ask "where did i go wrong" or "how should I continue from here", expect to get meme replies such as "Loomis".

Follow these simple rules and the generals will become much more productive for both the /beg/s and the people giving advice

1. Stop chicken scratching. Do long, controlled, continuous lines. Chicken scratching is a crutch for people who can't or are intimidated in controlling their lines.

2. Your problem is you draw the body by focusing on each individual part. Which is why basically every single body part in your drawing is misplaced.
You need to always move your head back and look at the entire figure. Instead of seeing and arm, a torso, and a leg, you should see their shapes which occupy the space.
This helps you break down the image into big general shapes, and makes it much easier to compare the positions and angles of these shapes relative to each other. You should ALWAYS compare the positions of the big landmarks. For instance, if you're drawing the girls left leg, you should observe where her knee is positioned relative to her head, relative to her hand, relative to her feet, etc.

3. You need to have a better construction procedure. As in, you need to know how to "block in the shapes" in order to carry out step 2 much easier. For this I suggest for you to watch Proko's videos on figure drawing and copying from reference. I also suggest to just look up videos on blocking in a figure on YouTube.

4. Needless to say you need to always improve your understanding of anatomy and proportions in the skeletal and muscular level. You have plenty of resources for this on /ic/.

Yes of course there is. They are is basically a wet reflective spheres. Eyballes will reflect environment just like an other reflective sphere would, the catch is that the eye has different colors and that the eyelid and the eyelashes always cast a shadow on it which partially hides it so that always messes things up. Like you can see the the ring spot light some use for camera shots.

This quite evident on photographs using flashes and studio lighting. Anime eyelight only use the same method but either simplify or overly exaggerate this. Usually slightly unrealistically to make the eyes shiny and inviting but without looking too weird. A notorious example is Irya-kun who uses this ring light on almost all of this artwork, even the Ghost in the shell Netfilx series constant has the ring light and 2 side spotlight in Motoko's eyes even if there are non around her both daytime and nighttime.

Do not overuse them because they will just look out of place, sometimes the less is more.

i also noticed how you were starting to shade the face, and i tried doing that way as well (anatomically correct with the indirect lighting wrapping around the bridge of the nose and connecting to the area between the eyebrows)

but it looked off to me so i tried to do a compromise with 2D/3D placement so it still looks anime-y

For the moment, don't draw a bunch of lumpy muscles like this. You need to be BIG PICTURE. That means gesture (loose, simplified sketches of a pose) and structure, or construction (clean cylinders and cubes to build up the human form.

Anatomy comes later.

Construction teaches WHAT the human form is - it's shape.
Gesture teaches HOW the form moves - it's function
Anatomy eventually links the two - the point where form and function collide, but that's for later.

For now, work on being clean, keep working on boxes (I see you're off to a great start), but I want you to use cylinders to build the limbs as much as possible.

I saw this and I was like "I'VE SEEN THAT BEFORE YOU FUCKING COPIER" and then I realized it was from a previous beg thread lol.

Still looks good to me, but the other figure is very flat and lacks perspective. It's also worth noting that his form his VERY ambiguous. I thought he was facing toward me for a minute, and now I see it's him facing away.

Try to avoid making people face DIRECTLY AT or DIRECTLY AWAY from the camera unless you're doing it for effect. It practically never happens in real life, and it makes it where the silhouette is gives no information on the characters orientation. The wrinkles on the arm / spilling onto his back are wrong, and I'd look up reference for that.

Anybody can be /beg/, /beg/ is a fruitful state of mind, in the beginners mind there are many opportunities to be taken advantage of, in the expert mind there are few.

I hope to remain /beg/ forever, for /beg/ is actually /zen/ mind. /beg/ is the most fun mind, who wouldn't want to be /beg/ forever? instead of the egotisitcal /int/ or ego driven barking mad /draw/fag

jesus just read this damn book why dontcha
http://www.arvindguptatoys.com/arvindgupta/zenmind.pdf

>B
EGINNER' S MIN D "In the beginner's mind
there are many possibilities, hut in the expert's
there are few."
People say that practicing Zen is difficult, but there is a
misunderstanding as to why. It is not difficult because it is
hard to sit in the cross-legged position, or to attain enlightenment. It is difficult because it is hard to keep our mind pure
and our practice pure in its fundamental sense. The Zen
school developed in many ways after it was established in
China, but at the same time, it became more and more impure. But I do not want to talk about Chinese Zen or the
history of Zen. I am interested in helping you keep your
practice from becoming impure.
In Japan we have the phrase shoshin, which means "beginner's mind." The goal of practice is always to keep our
beginner's mind. Suppose you recite the Prajna Paramita
Sutra only once. It might be a very good recitation. But what
would happen to you if you recited it twice, three times, four
times, or more? You might easily lose your original attitude
towards it. The same thing will happen in your other Zen
practices. For a while you will keep your beginner's mind,
but if you continue to practice one, two, three years or more,
although you may improve some, you are liable to lose the
limitless meaning of original mind.

>> No.4919483

Everyone's a /beg/ when you're a crab and want to make said person feel dumb and everyone's not a /beg/ when you're a crab and also want to make said person feel dumb, and /ic/ is all crabs all the time, does that answer the question? Spend little time here and maybe let it go while you can.

>> No.4919487

>>4919480

For Zen students the most important thing is not to be
dualistic. Our "original mind" includes everything within
itself. It is always rich and sufficient within itself. You should
not lose your self-sufficient state of mind. This does not mean
a closed mind, but actually an empty mind and a ready mind.
If your mind is empty, it is always ready for anything; it is
open to everything. In the beginner's mind there are many
possibilities; in the expert's mind there are few.
If you discriminate too much, you limit yourself. If you
are too demanding or too greedy, your mind is not rich and
self-sufficient. If we lose our original self-sufficient mind, we
will lose all precepts. When your mind becomes demanding,
when you long for something, you will end up violating your
own precepts: not to tell lies, not to steal, not to kill, not to
be immoral, and so forth. If you keep your original mind,
the precepts will keep themselves.
In the beginner's mind there is no thought, "I have attained something." All self-centered thoughts limit our vast
mind. When we have no thought of achievement, no thought
of self, we are true beginners. Then we can really learn something. The beginner's mind is the mind of compassion. When
our mind is compassionate, it is boundless. Dogen-zenji, the
founder of our school, always emphasized how important it is
to resume our boundless original mind. Then we are always
true to ourselves, in sympathy with all beings, and can actually practice.
So the most difficult thing is always to keep your beginner's mind. There is no need to have a deep understanding
of Zen. Even though you read much Zen literature, you must
read each sentence with a fresh mind. You should not say,
"I know what Zen is," or "I have attained enlightenment."
This is also the real secret of the arts: always be a beginner.
Be very very careful about this point. If you start to practice
zazen, you will begin to appreciate your beginner's mind.
It is the secret of Zen practice

T O POLIS H A TILE "When you become you, Zen becomes Zen. When you are you, you see things as they are, and you become one with your surroundings." Zen stories, or hoans, are very difficult to understand before you know what we are doing moment after moment. But if you know exactly what we are doing in each moment, you will not find koans so difficult. There are so many koans. I have often talked to you about a frog, and each time everybody laughs. But a frog is very interesting. He sits like us, too, you know. But he does not think that he is doing anything so special. Whe n you go to a zendo and sit, you may think you are doing some special thing. While your husband or wife is sleeping, you are practicing zazen! You are doing some special thing, and your spouse is lazy! That may be your understanding of zazen. But look at the frog. A frog also sits like us, but he has no idea of zazen. Watch him. If something annoys him, he will make a face. If something comes along to eat, he will snap it up and eat, and he eats sitting. Actually that is our zazen—not any special thing. Here is a kind of frog koan for you. Baso was a famous Zen master called the Horse-master. He was the disciple of Nangaku, one of the Sixth Patriarch's disciples. One day while he was studying under Nangaku, Baso was sitting, practicing zazen. He was a man of large physical build; when he talked, his tongue reached to his nose; his voice was loud; and his zazen must have been very good. Nangaku saw him sitting like a great mountain or like a frog. Nangaku asked, "Wha t are you doing?"

>> No.4919493

>>4919492

I am practicing zazen, " Baso replied. "Wh y are you practicing zazen?" "I want to attain enlightenment; I want to be a Buddha," the disciple said. Do you know what the teacher did? He picked up a tile, and he started to polish it. In Japan, after taking a tile from the kiln, we polish it to give it a beautiful finish. So Nangaku picked up a tile and started to polish it. Baso, his disciple, 8 0 RIGH T ATTITUD E asked, "Wha t are you doing?" "I want to make this tile into a jewel, " Nangaku said. "How is it possible to make a tile a jewel? " Baso asked. "Ho w is it possible to become a Buddha by practicing zazen?" Nangaku replied. "Do you want to attain Buddhahood ? There is no Buddhahood besides your ordinary mind. Whe n a cart does not go, which do you whip, the cart or the horse? " the master asked. Nangaku's meaning her e is that whatever you do, that is zazen. True zazen is beyond being in bed or sitting in the zendo. If your husband or wife is in bed, that is zazen. If you think, "I am sitting here , and my spouse is in bed, " then even though you are sitting her e in the cross-legged position, that is not true zazen. You should be like a frog always. That is true zazen.

this is a good attitude too, humble, but don't forget you're a person first, and an artist second. that way of thinking got me into some heavy drugs and abusive relationships.
You're a person, who does art. Purge thyself of this "artist" tag, and never look upon it with honor ever again. "Artists" are to be despised.
A man who smoke hookah and has a dope pad and dresses funny, talks loud and is a generally odd looking but somewhat attractive in the face, is a nothing but a closet homosexual or "artist". Closet-Artist perhaps. He's an artist in name only, everything about his dress suggests he is artistic, but does he produce works?

N O P E .

Your paintings are your offspring, and you must devour your offspring, cut them to pieces, reassemble the the best four, devour them again, excrete the best one, and dolly it up and then you MIGHT be getting better.

rinse and repeat until you die. have fun. there are no rules. only tools and fools who think their worldview and method works must work for everyone.

Your lines aren't so much scratchy as it looks like you're bearing down on the pencil like you're using a wrench on a stuck bolt. Relax your grip.

LOOK at the reference. It's an eye. You're measuring, without it meaning anything. You're symbol drawing here, you're drawing what you think is there, not what is there - and it's right in front of you.

Look at the space below the pupil, above the lower lid - you completely missed that, every time.

Stop drawing the inside of the eyelids as an almond shape, and LOOK at the structure.

Look at how the eyelashes are, and where they are on the lid, and where the follicle is, and the shape of the hair, especially as it has makeup on it, so it's thick at the base, and tapers.

Draw smoother, simple lines with less pressure. Draw faint lines to figure out where they go, then do a final line with more confidence and flow.

Look how big the pupil is, in relation to the iris.

Imagine the eyeball, and it's shape, and how everything else lays on top of it, and how the lids wrap around it.

Look at the white space of the eyeball, and how everything relates to it.

Look.

Measure.

Draw.

Hey Disney fag,

The next step would be to define contours more accurately and cleanly, draw the hair more accurately and give it more form and texture, and use a combination of harder leads with the one you're using to get a better value gradient across the drawing. Eyebrows have a texture, they're not solid shapes like that, they have grain and structure. Define the lips better.

It's a good attempt. The next steps are refine and polish more. Your values need work, you're going from too dark to blown out highlights, work on your mid tones and transitions - stop smudging, and work on being able to do a smooth, clean area of value with pencil strokes. If you want to practice, draw ten boxes on a page, an inch square, and fill them cleanly with values going from 10% to 100%, using only pencil strokes. Smudging has it's place, but you need to work on pencil control more.

Another thing to try is to unify your strokes across the drawing, all of them in the same general direction, as practice.

i drew this rat in an alley for inktober, and people always seem impressed by 5pp. its just a trick. its not that hard. i havent mastered it, but i thought if i showed you how i do it that more people might try it.

Just draw a circle. dead center is the vanishing point for depth straight back. the 12 a'clock vanishing point is where every line going straight up converges, same for left and right and down. In this picture i fucked up some of the proportions. the rat is way too big.

but basically my advice for you, to get better than me, is to practice cubes in this perspective. its fun. just figure out how the lines would curve. and then you can put things in the cubes.

the perspective is very forgiving. people are usually impressed that you even tried and it distorts enough that they don't really notice some of the mistakes that would be glaringly obvious in 3pp like the proportions of the rat for example.
