For anyone wondering this is Tableguy.
https://twitter.com/tableguyart?s=21

What I like about this is that people will often look at this and get discouraged because it took him “seven years” to get where he is now, but it really only took him one year to become decent, and two and three years to make actually really aesthetic and neat stuff from imagination. Getting to a place where you’ve definitely improved doesn’t take seven years.
But as Tableguy points out, his journey isn’t over; now he’s going to focus on other areas he’s lacking in like backgrounds.
Too many people on here treat “gmi” like an endpoint of masterhood, but really it’s a term referring to making a career.
Practicing and making art actually never ends.

I flipped through the summer 2014 sketchbook which is huge, something like ~150 pages in 30 days. Which is like 5 pages of multiple drawings a day. I don’t think I’ve ever drawn that much since then...

I switched mediums twice in one month pencil > pen > markers . But I think it was drawing in pen. Pen sketching really resonated with me. It made me more thoughtful about putting down lines. I still like drawing in pen. Maybe I discovered a medium that was comfortable for me?

If you search twitter for “@tableguyart #sketchbook” there are some flip throughs, but they were posted in no particular order. In chronological order the post dates are 3/4/2020, 8/31/2020, 10//2/2020, 7/23/2020, 4/15/2020

>>4909362
Thanks man! Well said. The first couple years were where the mileage really counted. Nowadays it’s harder for me to find similar gains, but drawing is just as enjoyable as it was 7yrs ago, albeit for different reasons

This is really strange, but probably endemic of self taught artists who follow advice of others almost sheepishly.

So you start off by drawing eyes very flatly. Fine, whatever. This is normal.

Then you do the Bargue plate of eyes and you correctly indicate how the two eyelids have multiple planes to themselves. Great. Now you *should* understand that the overall structure of an eye is not flat and has curving forms and front, bottom, top, side planes.

Then you go continue to draw eyes flatly after doing this exercise.

Have you not learned anything?

>> No.4910309

No he's right, I was too harsh.

When you do these exercises - lets take Bargue for example - you need to apply the knowledge in a very direct way. Next time you grab a reference or you're drawing a head from imagination or a caricature or whatever, ask yourself "What would Bargue do?" and literally do that. And milk the exercise that way for all it's worth. Copy everything, the line weight and tone, the way it subtly curves as it meets another plane, and so on.

If you don't do this, then the point of doing it is lost and you're just aimlessly doing plates because, I assume, someone told you to do them, but didn't tell you what you should do with them.

So now I'm telling you.

Godspeed.

There's seems a stigma against rendering too early in your art journey ( or more accurately finishing piece when you are still bad at form and anatomy) around here which just seems more counterproductive than helpful at the end of the day since you're avoiding basically exploring techniques until you are good enough.

spending 50 hours staring at the same wonky mess while you render it, drilling its awful proportions and skewed perspective into your brain is counterproductive and high opportunity cost.

>more accurately finishing a piece when you are still bad at form an anatomy
that's not more accurate though, the stigma is against trying to sakimi up your garbage. cleaning up, doing /beg/ lineart attempts with something basic like cel shading so that you're thinking about the whole process and light and color and can clearly see the faults isn't something i've seen discouraged.

>> No.4910848

It infinately better to blow an afternoon on a bad drawing atleast learn something than put of even attempting to paint until you are a soft expert on anatomy. Futhermore if the art comes out shit then it comes out shit, what's it to you that someone choose to punch above their weight instead taking the easyway out and do a simple cel shade? It worked for the person that did the OP pic and it work for others too.

Full illustrations are nice, but if you want to tell a story through a comic, you'd better learn to simplify your art so that you can produce it quickly enough to make a 40 page comic viable.
