- go easy on the crease lines, they are too strong. Use 2-tone or 3-tone shading instead.

- She has mosquito pricks breasts, maybe you were going for that? It wouldn't hurt to increase their diameter. Not depth, just diameter.

Some of your contour lines are very ornate (belly button, vulva) while others are very simple (face, ass). The ornateness makes it look very fleshy (pic related) which I find off-putting. Just my personal preference.

Compare your pic to the reference. You're off in several places. The arms are tiny and at the wrong angles. Compare his right hand in both pics. The knee is very obviously misplaced. Neck is too long.

Do some more work on the most basic parts of the gesture. Just get your stick figure right first. Your construction is off because you've gotten the gesture wrong.

Is draw a box worth your time? Or is the 250 boxes a meme? To me it seems some repetition is needed to get things set in stone, but so far i have mixed thoughts towards the whole thing. I picked it up because it seemed to be the most acessible way to start to get to draw, the most "streamlined" course, and it hasn't dissapointed me in that way, but it just seems that at certain parts the author goes into autistic monologues that don't really help to understand things. I'm not saying "technicalities", specifically, but talking more of the author saying things "his own way" rather than saying concise things that actually make sense. That and that generally the videos seem really low effort. So to rephrase my question, would i be better off bothering with some other resource, or does it really make little difference?

Drawing boxes in perspective will help you. It doesn't have to be 250 and you can stop if you get bored. It shouldn't be the only thing you do. It won't take you that long even if you do all 250.

Just do it. If you've started it, do it. By the time you're starting to get good, you will have drawn literally HUNDREDS and HUNDREDS of heads. Hundreds of figures etc.

By the time you get there 250 boxes will seem like a hop skip and a jump by comparison, so just knock it out and move on - the intuitive understanding of perspective you gain by drawing rudimentary solids will literally prop up the rest of your skills forever, so just look at it as an investment in a good foundation.

Sounds great. Drawing on the Right Side is all about observational drawing and draw a box is about constructive drawing, aka the two horsemen of the GMI-calypse. As long as your practicing hard that's a pretty good jumping off point (although I suspect you'll bore of Right Side as you get better at perspective and you'll want to move on to something more academic).

If you're actually trying to do a likeness, you should think about your approach. You are symbol drawing, which is a big obstacle for a lot of beginners.

Rather than drawing what you see, you're drawing symbols. For instance, you see an eye, so you draw the cartoon eye you know best (rather than the specific eye of the actual person you're looking at).

You should learn some realism, specifically the actual construction of real features, the human head and it's proportions etc.

Not only will it help you be able to draw likenesses from life, but the understanding of a realistic human form will make your stylized / anime drawings much, much better. Real mangaka are not generally slouches in the realism department, and they apply real life knowledge to the problem or manga stylized drawings.

>> No.4881579

>>4881568
Careful with the watching streams part, don't let it become a distraction. Focused attention on what you're doing is critical for drawing improvement.

I just took a stab at some cubes for my own curiosity. In 5 minutes I drew 7 cubes in various orientations with 2 sides shaded by hatching. At that pace I could complete the 250 cubes exercise in about 3 hours. I'm not saying you should try to work that fast, but I'm saying if you're focused it should take you less than a couple weeks with a couple hours a weeknight working on it (I'm aware there are more exercises than that, but the 250 seems to be the point where a lot of beginners start to question the process).

If it's taking much longer than that you may not be focusing enough, or you may not be drawing enough each day.

You have a better foundation than you think, realism will be a lot of fun for you and if you work hard you'll come back to manga ready to beast mode.

Loomis is a great primer. I think you are better off watching actual gesture being done than reading about it and Proko's gestures are pretty good so look up his gesture ones on youtube (the rest of his stuff is great too, his goofy teacher shtick isn't for everyone but it's that or regular dull teacher so take your pick).

Lower third still feels long. Try moving the chin up so that the distance between the brows and the nostrils, and the nostrils and the chin are the same (i.e. move the chin up so nostrils are dead center).

The left side of the mouth is ambiguous, the brows are thick and not carefully drawn. The hair does not have volume and looks thin (it does not loft with volume but is instead pretty flat on the scalp), the very sharp pointed part of the hair gives the impression of a receding hairline.

The blobby tones in the face are giving a somewhat "middle aged man" impression. The lack of eyelashes, darkly drawn lower lids and very deep upper lid crease aren't helping.

Obviously no. Once you've A. gotten good heads in general and B. done lots of comparative measurement drawing, you can do it without a grid.

Usually it involves doing a rough sketch, and then moving things around until they're just right (i.e. "the side of the nostril is just above the corner of the mouth...") but I have seen people do it in a single pass.

This was my exact reasoning.

I know it's a bad idea to try to spread my focus too thin, but I'm trying to learn new Software + Hardware at the same time as learning to draw/paint. I know that's one of the arguments of learning Trad first.. but still, there was not a lot of time spent in this.

I intentionally didn't spend much time on the coloring, but it gave an opportunity to try additional brushes and a tiny bit of blending. Was expecting harsh criticism, but was hoping it would be a bit more helpful than just "don't render/color if you can't even draw properly".

Is there a way to get good at hair and cloth folds without having to actually practice drawing them?

The shadow is lighted by the ambient light, so it depends on the surroundings. Under the sun that usually means lots of blue and green ambient light, but you could have reddish shadows with yellow sunlight if you were surrounded by red stone and got no blue sky. You can imagine all objects to function as a sort of ultra blurry mirror with some paint on top, your surroundings are mirrored in your shadow, but it's so blurry that it just looks like some colors. I really recommend playing around in Blender a bit for a feel for this, make sure you got an HDRI and screen space reflections on.

Sup, fellas. Been drawing for a couple weeks now, mainly sketches on random objects trying to get a feel of things, but eventually decided to move onto characters and by watching a couple of tutorials my understanding of how to structure things to make the work easier increased but I'm still at the very beggining of the journey.

In this ocasion I chose the public masturbator of im@s because her face is rather simple and she's cute af. Obviously I did a few things wrong since it looks nothing like it, but what do you guys think it was? My main guess is that I didn't prepare the main circle correctly and that the hairline was too close to it also, but I would like to know what you guys think.

I think the shape of her head is off, and her features aren’t positioned correctly on it. I struggle with this a lot too, but try to spend more time finding the proper intersection between the center line of the face and the brow line. Loomis says that the sort of “cross” that you find at that intersection is the reference point you want to use for the positioning of the face’s features, and following that advice has helped make my own faces less derpy.

You still need practice to get your features all lined up but you're doing the right thing (and honestly, at a quick glance if you didn't have the box visible to point out the eye level error... basically nobody would even notice it wasn't perfect).

Unironically - Loomis. You want to eventually get to the simplified Loomis head - that's the one in the image I posted.

Once you can do that easily, you can just stop cutting off the sides (most anime heads use the full head sphere) and use a shorter, pointier facial mass and chin.

You could also do box construction if it's easier for you. The goal is to just get the basic forms built in 3D - there are a bunch of different possible constructions, but Loomis adjusted for Anime proportions works just fine.

As for actual feedback, the tip of the violin doesn't look in perspective. It looks like it's coming less towards the viewer compared to the body of the violin. In other words, I guess, it looks flat. That's as much as this amateur can say about your sketch.

You only need just enough rudimentary knowledge to get started, I would be surprised if you couldn't knock out some pretty good Loomis heads once you learn them.

draw faces, but focus on your line dexterity (remember to ghost and draw in as little lines as possible)
consider the construction of faces
and try pushing and pulling features
