When you first switch to anime / Disney, the change in proportions feels wack and the giant eyes get crammed into the bottom half of the skull.

It's hard if you've been drawing a normally proportioned Loomis to switch to an anime "Loomis". Don't beat yourself up.

It looks like you did a pretty sloppy construction. I know it's a pain in the ass to do a really careful one, but it DOES pay off, and the more you do it the less you need it for regular every day poses - eventually you'll just use it for hard head positions that you can't eyeball.

All 2D art is 2D. Construction is the projection of 3D geometry into a 2D space.

Before someone says, "Oh well anime faces don't make sense from a 3D perspective so you shouldn't construct them", you should 100% construct the "impossible" Escher cube in 3D with a ruler and vanishing points, and that is much more of a fudge of geometry than the anime face is.

Here's a beg thing, and I'm not picking on you specifically, but there's a lot of "I tried doing this thing and it came out bad," posts, as if that means you're just doing it wrong.

You should not set down roots on any single drawing and go "this is the one that determines if I've got what it takes". You will do HUNDREDS of figures from imagination before it starts to really click. That means your first 100 will probably all be bad, but the last one will be FAR beyond the first.

In this case, you just gotta go back and correct your proportions somewhat. The head is too small, the arm is too long, one hip is much bigger than the other.

you need to take real anime and actually study how they do the style.
the proportions are often different, and everything is stylized in a consistent way... it's not like american cartoons where everything can be varied.
study anime faces hard, analyze proportions, analyze how they simplify/stylize the forms.

Why is the viewing height/eye height always the same height as the horizon line?

I'm trying to intuit it but I can't for some reason. I know even in space it wouls still be the same height, so it's some property of just where the eye is in relation to the subjects. When tilted down or up, horizon line will be same but with 3 point perspective VP added. Kinda makes sense in space but why is it always always the same on Earth no matter how high up you fly? I guess because it's something about the angle you're looking at. Like it's relative so looking straight "ahead" will always mean looking directly at the horizon, even if you're really high up. So the eye tilt will track downwards with the Earth's horizon as you go up. Oh and I also realized the horizon is really just a flat ground plane from the camera. So it actually wouldn't necessarily be accurate for objects way far below on a different ground plane you if you're high up in the atmosphere.

It's always that way, very frustrating I know.

To start with, I assure you you can learn the fundamentals in digital or traditional, so pick which one you think looks fun.

Just draw for a couple of weeks, have fun with it, and don't stress about it too much. If you are feeling like you want to keep doing what you're doing, great. If you're feeling like you want to start a learning path, start with perspective. My own opinion is that Peter Han is better when you're more advanced, Draw a Box is definitely the beginner program, but it IS dull. I'm not familiar with Keys to Drawing but it does get brought up a lot. Whichever you do is fine, but, make sure you're working hard enough to really understand it, but not so hard that you're bored to death (perspective is a very rigid topic without a lot of "style" leeway).

Don't stress too much about your starting off point - your ambition, dedication, intensity will get you to your destination if you want to get there. After a few months if you're really trying you'll know a lot better where you need to go.

>> No.4873380

>>4873233
Ill go in detail than instead of mentioning a complex word such as "coloring."

The hair has no large defying shapes, the way you shaded his coat that floats above the skin makes it look really flat on his left side, the muscular structure, specifically on his abs doesnt make sense here, along with the fact that he is missing a clavicle, trapezoids, and seriously just look at pic related to understand where you went wrong near the neck area. and the coloring/shading style you went with for the skin does not match his armor. I cant tell you how to fix your coloring/shading since im still just studying that myself, but I do know the general rule of coloring in shapes and not depending on lines for describing form which, for the hair + eyebrows you seemed to break the rule. You did describe the form correctly for his face structure/muscles however so I will give you that.

You have to use the measurements you CAN see (i.e. those least foreshortened or similarly foreshortened) to estimate where everything goes.

Generally you'd start by eyeballing it (gesture) construct as best you can to get the forms right, then measure you check your work.

If you ABSOLUTELY cannot tell where something goes, you can draw a perspective box around the character, draw the pose in 2D from directly in front and directly to the side, and measure from those angles to plot the location of a joint / feature (see ModernDayJames on youtube for how to do this) but you usually won't need to go so far.

Also... Get into the pose (feeling it helps you draw it) and if you're drawing without reference there's no better time to take a picture of yourself doing the pose so you have reference anyway.

After a while, only the hardest poses need so much care (and really... you only need to be so close to fool the viewer, even Kim Jung Gi makes mistakes who cares).

I've sen loads of tutorials of artists that draw/render on greyscale, then put a colored layer on top, and voilá, automatic good coloring.

I have NEVER been able to do that. I can only do decent colors if I'm painting with a palette from the get go. Grayscale + layer magic has never worked out for me, it's always a washed out mess.

Here's a sketch, I've tried several layer modes and the only "decent" one was linear burn at 45% (and even so it looks awful). Am I an idiot? What am I missing here? Did I fall for a meme?

Keep at that and the basic lines version of it. The elispse one is really more for sizing, while the lines one and ghosting practice is better for getting the lining right.

But overall the best method is just to draw and make sure to try and actually do it, no matter if you mess it up. It's about getting the thought process down, noting your mistakes and attemting to fix them. Don't revert back to scratching unless you are roughing out an idea. Which is completely okay to do. Don't listen to the faggots here who make nonsense statements about everything has to be a perfect confident line all the time, they are the real NGMI because they are hung up on shit and not moving forward.

I think the "bright room" can be desaturated a bit so your focus characters (the girl as the primary, then the dad as the secondary) can add more impact. Most of the problems I think are just from color theory/picking the right colors.

Studying rooms like pic related can help to add that "calm" feeling that contrasts with the chaotic outside environment. And also, I would change the background of having a giant meteor hit a planet clearly over just a bunch of ambiguous meteors flying about. But this is just based on my personal interpretation of your pic (which could be wrong)

Another thing to look at is the edge of your lights/shadows, as well as where you want to put the "main focus point" of your composition. The lights/shadows will vary when you've chosen where you will put your main focus point.

but idk I'm a beginner too so take my words with a grain of salt.

There are just a bunch of small things that add up to a slightly wonky figure. I've gone and made the character a little stouter and chunkier for clarity, but the proportions aren't too important.
I think much of the figure looks rather formless or floaty, there there are a lot of vague connections that would benefit from some cross contour lines. The elbow joints on the arms especially, the lines become wispy and unclear. Define it clearly! Overlapping lines can really help the viewer understand what's going on with the forms, if a figure is all outlines it leads to ambiguity.
Skin tight clothing is a great tool for defining forms, too. The sleeves, cuffs, bottoms of shirts, pant holes, etc. should wrap around the form convincingly. It seems like a small thing, but it's very important, so don't skimp out on them.
I think you've got a strong foundation to build upon here. All my notes are fairly nitpicky and are things that come with practice and an understanding of the figure. Studying some basic anatomy would help you a bunch, just so you can start putting down some confident, well-informed land marks. I hope this helps

Tablets are great, but you should definitely still have access to at least a stack of copy paper and a cheap pencil. For some reason I find it way easier to start drawing If I'm working traditionally as opposed to on my computer. I'd recommend working traditionally for a few days a month to every digitalfriend out there - it teaches you valuable lessons about line economy and pen control that are hard (not impossible) to learn digitally. Plus, there's nothing more satisfying than finally finishing a densely filled sketchbook or cramming the last sheet of paper in that overflowing expanding folder.

Got a tablet for my birthday a few years back and finally decided to put it to use and get into the daily grind with all the free time I've got.
Issue is that I've literally never put pen to paper with the intention of making art, and even the stuff in the sticky seems overwhelming to me. I keep hyper-focusing on all the different resources I could be using and just end up doing nothing.
Anyone got advice for the most beginner of beginners?

Just start with drawing on the right side of the brain or keys to drawing. Both are good, and PDFs are available for both so you can check them out and pick your favorite. Don't worry about too much else in the sticky until you're through one of them.

just get a book from sticky like keys to drawing and read it? its really simple, just commit to a book most of the beginner ones share same info anyways so dont get too caught up in which book is the best, when you want to focus on the issues in your art say perspective then ok you can read perspective made easy etc

Over all this is good. Can you post the ref? There are a few issues I see:

1) The planes of the head do not align with facial features. The angle of the eyebrows seems to be off and it doesn't seem to curve around the skull at the right place. It could be that the rear eye needs to be tucked in further and make more space for the cheekbone because the closer eye seems to have a massive cheekbone in front of it.

2) The top lip philtrum and the way the far lip curves doesn't seem to follow the nose too well. Again, goes back to #1 - the facial features seem too "flat" compared to the head. They need to curve with the head. The peaks of the philtrum also seem slight too exaggerated, but that's not a big deal.

Take a look at those two.

Post ref anyway, I'd like to see what the fuck the thing actually looks like.

I took liberties
I can see the near cheekbone not matching the face, I tried making the plane change sit a bit higher rather than changing the outline, since this was mostly a rendering exercise.
I see the philtrum being off, I tried fixing that and giving her a bit more existent chin while I was at it, not sure what you mean by the far lip curve

Much better, although you're really making her blocky now, so now you can go in and render it out to smooth her a bit.

Don't treat rendering as separate from drawing, especially for the facial features. It has to lock in otherwise it will look uncanny.

>far lip curve

Terrible at explaining things sometimes. I meant the way the top lip curves away from us into the distance. You fixed that as well.

One last thing to really make it lock in - her eyebrow doesn't peak as much as you have it, and has an overall downslope look to it, whereas your eyebrow seems to travel upwards the whole time.

Pretty sure you saw that anyway considering how far you've gotten.

Great work.

PS. The near eye is too damn fucking large.
