This is an ultra broad topic but composition basically borrows photography techniques(used to be the other way around) to make an image easy/pleasing to the eyes

wolf headbutting the frame is obviously bad, woman in the middle is boring.
the dude, the landscape and the window are all fine as is on the left. pretending they're not or slavishly moving things to hit the third lines is retarded and also boring.

>slap an armature on top of your image/viewfinder
>arbitrarily move things around until part of your image eclipses one of your armature lines/intersections
>or just barely touches it on one of the edges lol idk
The rule of thirds/armatures, like most compositional rules of thumb, is descriptive rather than prescriptive.

The rule of thirds is useful in a few ways:
1. It helps the artist ensure the subject has enough room
2. It discourages centering the subject, which is often seen as disinteresting
and
3. It helps people avoid visual tangents at the edge of the image

BUT
1. Breaking it down into thirds specifically is completely arbitrary
2. Opposition to centered images is subjective and nowhere near universal
3. The use of literal guidelines obfuscates the ACTUALLY valuable compositional information like giving things space, avoiding tangents IN GENERAL, guiding the eye, etc.

Composition isn't an exact science, but it sure as shit doesn't need pseudo science.

The rule of thirds mostly applies to photography, where a photographer isn't in control of the surrounding context of the subject but still has to use it for framing. Illustrators have the option of using plain white backgrounds for everything and framing subjects so that the canvas is filled anyways.

basically decide where you want the viewer's eyes to go when they look at your image. where are they supposed to focus? and then guide them there.
this is done primarily through contrast. our natural instinct is to focus on the things that stand out. in a dark room you're drawn to the brightest light, in a bright you focus on the darks etc. shapes have an influence too, as do rhythms and patterns.
in pic related, what was the first thing you saw? how was your eye guided across the image? and also importantly, where didn't you look without consciously forcing yourself?
every image is a comic book essentially, just without the panels.

kind of long winded but he goes through a lot of the standard ideas about compostion in a very literal sense
graphic la is worth reading as well imo. it's one of the better artbooks

Is there any useful, pratical book on composition/design subject? I see things like "Picture This: How Pictures Work", but I have no idea if that's what I need. Would needed it for painting, illustration and comics.

not many artists know either
they just have a keen eye on what looks and feels good
like how many guitarists can make amazing melodies without learning the specific essays of bullshit that comes with learning chords and music theory
just have ideas and make them

Not many

>> No.4873480

I like the lever principle as a metaphor. A symmetrical lever is boring and an unbalanced one is annoying. An asymmetrical yet balanced lever is okay. Check ukiyo-e, it's pretty easy to observe that effect in those.

but... composition isn't just about making a picture work, as if you were some plumber unclogging a dirty toilet.

It's about organizing things to create a certain feeling. Artistry. To aim above. This... I don't understand

nigga you just practice
basically you make a bunch of shit, and it will be shit, and that's ok. you learn as you go, and you look at artists you like and their work and see how they do composition. can you take what they do and flip it? experiment. fail with purpose. wtf "how do i into composition?" you just compose till it becomes decent. the "art" and to "aim above" is INSIDE your practice you fucking noob egg.
now get practicing
