don't fall into the trap of drawing for the sake of drawing, as someone who legit filled in 24 sketchbooks (120 pages each, 8 pages a day) over a year, i can confidently say i probably got about 20% of the gains i could have had over that year doing around 2-4 pages per day, purely because while i was trying to identify and solve problems in my work, because of the volume i had to put onto paper, i was also re-enforcing bad habits and encouraged to not add 100% of my attention to each drawing, because i would never make the 8 page requirement for that day.

regardless, i barely draw in my sketchbook at home any more since i work more in digital, thoughtcrimes i do return to it sometimes, for idea making or character thumbnails, i filled around 3 sketchbooks last year

>> No.4864622

Could you show some pages from your 24 sketchbooks? Cause if your only gained 20% .. well i don't know how your practiced.
And it depends what you drew, i can fill 20 pages in 45 min. with only 30 sec. gestures.and will get more out of it then a 20 hour one-pose study.

I finished 2 in the last year (the little 5x7 Molskine type ones), and ream of loose leaf paper which I prefer to draw on at home. I usually draw on one side of the books unless I’m doing a vertical piece across 2 pages, so they go pretty fast.

I think it’s important not to get hung up on sketchbooks (either trying to complete them, or trying to perfect them). As a kid I never finished one for fear of a bad drawing coming after a good one and spoiling my nice sketchbook.

well if you want to improve, you draw to improve. if you want to create things, you draw to create. drawing for the sake of drawing in that case was drawing just to fill in 8 pages full of drawings. the main point is to have a goal of why you are drawing, know what you want to get out of it before putting pen to paper.

>So what other sake is there to draw for if not for the sake of drawing?
I would phrase it differently; to me, "drawing for the sake of drawing" means drawing without being influenced by an ulterior motive such as money, approval, improvement, etc. but many people on here seem to use it in a way with a meaning closer to "mindless, obligatory grinding".

That is not to say, however, that something created when "drawing for the sake of drawing" can't make you money or win you prizes or improve your skills. If you do a drawing of a bear in a funny little hat because fuck you I wanted to draw a bear in a funny little hat, that is "drawing for the sake of drawing" even if it ends up winning you art prizes, elevating your twitter handle to a household name and getting bought by a gallery for a gorillion dollars because none of that entered into the original equation - you just wanted to draw a bear in a funny little hat and everything else was incidental.

"Drawing for the sake of drawing" needs to be supplemented if you're going to improve, though. This doesn't mean that you have to spend eight hours grinding boxes or skellingtons, just that gitting gud means at least some amount of concentrating on gitting gud as opposed to doing what you want. It also doesn't have to be unpleasant - drawing your waifu in a cheongsam can good fun, but if you were thinking "hmm, today I'll draw my waifu in a cheongsam so I can make SS-Oberführer Hogarth proud even though drapery gives me headaches" then I would argue that you are no longer "drawing for the sake of drawing" in the strictest terms. Is there anything wrong with that? Of course not. You like doing the drawing because it's your waifu in a slinky dress and you derive a benefit because you're practicing drapery.

if you draw for 45 min. - only gestures which hold for 30 sec. you will get 90 poses, so usually 4 - 5 poses per page (both sides).

while (probably) being true, fuck you for the cocky attitude. Also, no shit, everything in art school literally comes down to learning how to do art so you will do alot of art. It's not like they are learning you economics or philosophy where you branch out to other paths, no, you choose school that is dedicated to art only, not like they are teaching you how to sell your art and how human interactions work so don't bitch about it lie 'hh AT LEAST 5 feet tall hgodspeed dude';
