You should do them now and again, but you should do hundreds of the simplified ones (image related).

At least go up through step 4: Cranial / facial mass and the 3rds division, but do SOME all the way to a finish.

It should only take a few minutes to complete one, but take as long as you need to do it right.

Take it from another retarded beg, it's important to know at least the basic proportions of a human head, so if you decide to do a face from imagination you can quickly discern what's wrong. It also helps to practice how a head looks from different views. Remember, you're trying to build up an innate sense of perspective on shapes first.

Hey guys i got a question, to show the idea of 3d on a figure like the human body, the main way is shading? i ask that because i can show the idea of 3d on a ball for example with countour lines but when drawing more complex thinks that are not that obvious i cant and the only way to show the volume of a nose for example that i could do is trough shading. I suck at shading so i just wanna know if i`m right in thinking that way.

new to trying to draw weeb stuff and digital.
I'm having difficulty doing self crit; if I dry to draw something realistic I can at least SEE how it looks
wrong and make an attempt to fix it, but with stylized stuff I'm sorta lost other than "it looks bad."
i.e, when i fuck up a realistic head I can see "oh, i did that nose real fucking badly, it looks too flat for this angle"
Are there something like those planar head models but for anime? Even in animu drawings I like it's hard to tell what the actual form of the head is/reads as flat, but it still manages to look appealing.

Also, lineart is hard, but I figure this is more of an issue with my actual motor control and underdrawing and will just take mileage.
That said, if anyone has good info on lineart 'theory' (use of lineweight, etc) or practice ideas I'm open.

pic related is not very good but the first sketch that doesn't make me hate myself
digital art can be a bit tiring, I have too much freedom and leeway to spend ages tweaking shit.

just find artists whose style you find appealing and dissect what makes it look good, then replicate it. anime doesn't necessarily have an authentic 3d form it represents, for example there was a talk from the devs of guilty gear (a 3d fighting game stylized to look like cel shaded anime), and they even said they had to program in special exceptions in the shading so that the shadow wouldn't appear where it should, but instead in a way that matched the shadow shape that an animator would design

You don't. You learn the box, learn the ball, learn the head. The superimposition is to show the progression of understandings, each in a logical order, from simple to complex. Ultimately you will draw ONLY the head (although it can still be useful to draw heads in boxes for perspective study - see the video on this topic by moderndayjames).

Misunderstanding that there is a progression of learning is why people are asking things like "I drew loomis heads, now what?"

Absolute newfag here. I'm still stuck in the "forms and shapes" part where I try to use shading to create the illusion of 3D. I just can't do it. I know that the idea is that you need to imagine a fixed point where the light comes from, and you need to imagine a sort of "wire" going accross the figure to show its dimensions but I can't do it.

Is there anything I could do/use to improve my understanding of this? Any videos that explain it in depth and not "just use shades bro! Just imagine a wire going across it bro!"? Or maybe some exercises I should do?

Because said boxes are used to work out the perspective of everything, if with a ruler, such mistake still happens, without it a bigger one can. And since it's used to figure out the most basic building blocks of a drawing, it can generate a cascade effect of wrong perspective in the drawing.

And the reason why people can't get past that is the incorrect assumption that perfection is required, they feel that if they can't get a box right, how will they get anything more complex?

The feet are small but I'll chalk that up to style. The anatomy is certainly simple, but your front hand gesture looks great, everything is proportionate etc.The hair looks phenomenal.

The only thing that SUPER sticks out is the right elbow (on the arm that is held up). You did the right shape (the curve up to the bone and then the flat ulnar section leading to the hand) but the curve is a little too big. Make that transition less chunky - leave the elbow right where it is, the curve underneath is the issue, it should cut a little closer to the pinch of the inner elbow.

I find it appealing. Good simple character design, well executed.

same here. i try to intuit curves and s bends, sometimes i get it right and sometimes i get it horribly wrong, my method is so inconsistent. i watched the proko videos on gesture a dozen times and i still don't seem to get it consistent, its a total crapshoot whether i make a proportional, flowing figure or a symbol drawn one. the thing that gives me the most hang-ups is the elbows and knees. when do you choose to make rhe entire limb one sweeping line? when to have the two parts clearly distinct with separate flow? when to combine the two? my instinct is to make every limb a tapered triangle to get the motion, but that's really boring looking and doesn't really capture the flow.

It's great that you're values have contrast, but now you should start adding variety to your light and shadow areas; get in there with a hard brush in some of those areas with values close to the value of the light. Also don't be afraid to have some soft edges between the tree and background or ball and background. The ball locks pretty plastic because the color looks pretty black.

Having used it myself, The point of it(I think) is to put a 2d overlay of a real object to help you draw what you see, taking a photo defeats the purpose cause then your just drawing a 2d object again, basically fuck the plane and just stare really hard at your hand irl and draw what you see

Dont hide hand, draw them.
Left arm is kinda bad, even if girls can bend the arm that way, it still looks bad, tho it'sbetter than the right one, which is just a mess.
Make the wrist smaller, make the thumb bigger, fix the fingers in general.
Connect the arm to the boobie.
Dont draw clavicles if you're gonna do them like that.
Make the right leg start higher, more attached to the belly.
Fix the neck, fix the shoulders. Breast is kind of fine.
Make her body more like an hourglass, even though not all girls have that type of body.

I could swear I've done these exact references before, lol. These are a great start. Finding the pelvis is the biggest thing I think needs work, and it's super hard (the pelvis an fucking odd shape, an unintuitive size, is incredibly mobile, and TOTALLY dictates how your torso turns out).

Definitely keep working on the chest / pelvis as boxes if you're not already, the chest and pelvis as simple masses (egg / bucket, etc.) and you might start working on the pelvis in detail if you have time to spare (the Proko method is the best I've found for constructing it).

Your thighs are a very non-specific shape and to get them right you'll need to know the major muscular groups (the quads, hamstrings, glutes and adductors) and getting THOSE right means knowing at least a simple pelvis really well, so definitely keep that as a goal.

I would make sure you're not spending a minute more on the hatch shading than needed to help yourself understand the form, you need to do LOTS of these to get past this stage (or at least I had to grind them hard... sometimes I still do) and you don't want them to take too long.

Finally, make sure you're paying attention to your thigh proportions, you're drawing them short (should be about two heads long on an 8 head figure)

How did you get that understanding from what is in that image? It's literally the opposite.

The image is literally a progression from a box to a (simplified) Loomis head. It's intended to show the requisite level of ability to move up to the Loomis head (which you'll carry with you in various levels of simplification for as long as you draw people).

If you're at stage 3, congrats, draw the piss out of that Loomis head, that's the point.

not really, sorry dude. you're drawing too small, the legs and waist is fine for /beg/ but the right shoulder are too off and the abs is just a symbol.

you need to learn a different way to do body construction. i recommend huston's figure drawing for artists, you can find an epub in the artbook thread. you can read the book in entirety if you want, but what really helped me out was doing one of the exercises to spend a month both tracing over and then referencing without tracing all of chapter 6's study material, as well as seeing how he compares the shapes to simpler ideas. stopping there is fine for simple cartoony material, but you can press on with the book if you want to begin serious anatomy construction.

Feet sizes are fucked, line quality and coloring is dreadful, but feel free to tear apart some specifics.

Was thinking of trying to actually try more than just a sketch, but seeing too many flaws and moving on to something else.

Trying to convince myself I'll stick with drawing this time, and trying out a shitty Intuos tablet which I'm not used to at all.

>> No.4867490

>>4867467
Yes. For perspective exercises, drawing spheres and such, fuck it do the circle tool. Eventually you'll use the tool / a circle template for actual illustration.

For practice heads... you need to try to develop your hand, and your ability to correct disproportionate circles as best you can - this will help you succeed with line quality in general.

Don't worry too much about it, a perfectly drawn circle isn't really necessary to get a good head. Like everything else, you're always going to have to make corrections after the construction stage no matter what you do.

here's a dumb question: how do you guys store large pages of work? I wanna keep pretty much everything I draw while learning and I got an awesome deal on some huge 14"x17" and 18"x24" (36x43 and 46x61 cm) sketch pads. The only problem is that they aren't spiral bound so the pages are going to fall out eventually. Can I get expanding folders that big or is there a better way to keep them so they don't get lost or damaged?

The drawing itself is not bad but the contours don't seem to follow the hand quite like they should. Specifically, I think the tendons on the left and right need to curve slightly more around the underlying form, and the curve on the wrist band is a bit odd. The fingers look pretty good overall, but the ring finger is also bending sorta weird.
