I bought this on some recommendations, but in the end, decided I did not really care for the way Soejima shaded and highlighted some things - especially hair. His style defines the Persona games, but I'm not that big of a fan.

I ended up selling the book for a loss, but I did eventually pick up an electronic copy.

Godhand came out in 2006 anon. In fact, due to its' age I had assumed no one would ever can it. It's a good scan too not amazing but good. It's literally the only God Hand book ever released. Actually now that I think about it, Capcom could make a lot of money selling a Clover studios artbook for all their games.

Print Artbooks are by their nature niche with print runs of like 10,000 or 100,00 max. This could be part of some nostalgia series. Like "Capcom Design Archives Part 3: Clover studios". And have others about street fighter, mega man, etc. Everything is about cost vs benefit, and artbooks are smaller scale than big games. Piracy is fucking rampant though which is why I fear more smaller titles won't get new artbooks and why the days of everything getting one in the 80's and 90's are gone.

There's no secret cache of artbooks that we have access to. Most of them are on nyaa, e-hentai, internet archive, or chinese sites. If it's not on those then it likely hasn't been scanned. Your only hope is then:

1. It was scanned by Chinese groups and it leaks to the net.
2. Someone decides to scan it.
3. You buy it and scan it.

There ARE secret cashes of book scans we don't have access to or aren't aware of. A lot of Japanese have paid to have their collections scanned, but keep them as private digital archives. Then Chinese scanners have their own archives and only a little bit of them leak online. Then there's the Russians who have extensive use of yandex and most of us haven't really looked around those quarters. I'm looking for really atmospheric and scenic stuff that depicts fantasy towns with people going about their business in market places, kids on adventures, scavengers going through ruins, and stuff like that.
Also weirder and more unconventional settings would be preferred from the typical "Tolkien-lite" type of stuff.

Impressionistic? The only fantasy video game that looks like that might be Final Fantasy 9. Maybe FF12 as you posted. For anything else? I don't know. A lot of the fantasy stuff I know is water color style. I love yoneda hitoshi's early falcom work but that's a little standard D&D fantasy style thing.

Oh thank you. Only apologizes is that the FF7 book is on E-hentai. I was just confused because I had mistaken what the cover was, and the title is hard to translate from Chinese.

Can someone mirror this shit? It's a lot of pdfs from game books. A lot of it is already available elsewhere, but not all of it. A lot of the prima stuff was on archive but was taken down.

It's a mirror of the game books from a 2017 version of private video game torrent tracker that's supposed to be super secret to avoid scrutiny. I think people have plucked through them to download host a lot of the zip/rar/cbr oens but have ignored the pdfs.

Well what do you know. Turns out artbooks don't grow on trees. Anything that isn't in the major sources isn't scanned. The best you can hope for is some chinese site scanned it or a chinese scanner will pick it up. The Mobile Suit League scanner doesn't stray too far from Gundam-Patlabor-Votoms though and she's responsible for 75% of all mecha scans in the last 12 years. .

shit, how much does this crap costs? You know they've done ZERO scans themselves as they steal mostly from e-hentai, and other unknown sources. Only the Chinese would have the gumption to sell other people's scans like that.

On top of that, I've been searching in vain for the source of those big retro video game guidebooks that have been dropping since 2018 and these sites are not it. None of the guides have have dropped are on these sites. The last one was 06-29 and they seem to appear once every 6 months.

Alright, so what you're after is not really gesture, it's more like proportion and anatomy knowledge and then gesture.

Look at books that focus on figure drawing, like Houston's Figure Drawing, or Anthony Ryder's book, or even Loomis' Figure Drawing book.

Figures generally look "stiff" because the anatomy is incorrect, the lines bend unusually (not enough straight lines, too many curves that don't indicate bony landmarks etc).

If you want to get into heavy gestural work to the point where it's speaking more to a symbolic representation of the action of the pose, something like the Force book is solid. But it's not a book for beginners. If you can't put down a line with confidence knowing what it represents, it won't help you.

As always, draw like a fucknut from photo refs, from life, capture people walking outside or construction workers bending over picking shit up, and try to memorize it, open up your sketchbook and draw what you think you saw. Exercise everything you've got like it's made of muscles.

Also don't rush. Forget the "quick gesture study" shit. That's for advanced artists who know what they are doing, and for plebs who have no idea what they are doing.

Take a photo ref and take it through to completion:

0) Optional, line of action.
1) Block in, so the feet are placed correctly and the center of gravity makes sense.
2) Anatomical details, so you know where the pelvis is, shoulder girdle, the proper placement of elbows.
3) Lights, darks, so you know if the fucking thing looks like what it should look like.
4) Rendering, so that you can get the inner anatomy developed too.
5) Optional, some kind of a statement of where you want the viewer's eye to focus, this is where you have your darkest darks and your lightest lights bumping into eachother and you play with having precise edge work.

All of /ic/ stops somewhere between 0-1 and never progresses to 2-5. Don't be like them. Do the whole fucking thing, and then slowly ramp up speed.

The best way to read non-English scans that im aware of is to translate each paragraph with a tool like capture2text you select an area in an image and it automatically does ocr(detect text) and translates. pretty good and you understand most of it BUT i want to go even further beyond. i want the whole book to be converted to english instead of manualy selecting paragraph after paragraph. i still havent found a way after hours of googling the closest thing i found is adobe acrobat and some sites can ocr all pages and it becomes selectable and editable(pic related) but acrobat doesn't have a translation feature and if i try to export as a docx(to translate somewhere else) the exported file is broken and looks like nothing like the scan. so any leads to achieve full auto translations ?

As an amateur translator who's still learning the language, all I can say is don't fully accept machine translation, especially an auto translation. Divides it into separate section, per paragraph or sentences. Also machine translation will always lose some nuances so you need to be careful too. I also use several machine translator when I'm not sure how to paraphrase it in English, and from my experience, bing does it better than google translate, however the best one is DeepL because it uses deep learning. When a machine translation does not make sense, I googled that phrase, look the definition in Japanese (it could be slang, or something that not common). What book is that by the way?

Has this book been scanned? I remember someone in this thread requested it a few weeks ago. The content of the book itself is not a tutorial of how to draw nor aimed at beginners, but rather it's more suited to illustrators/mangaka/animators who want to improve their skills. It's full of words, advice, tips and little of drawings, still the book is pretty great from what I've heard. Tatsuyuki Tanaka is no doubt a skilled animator/illustrator, but he rarely makes appearance and a bit reclusive. So it's a great opportunity to learn directly from the man himself. I really want to translate this book, if anyone is interested of course.

not really: the first step for learning how to draw is trying physically. thats the mindset: willing means trying.

that usually means a pencil, pen, etc + paper, your smartphone, or mouse + pc.

learning properly means reading and trying exercises to understand classical theory. ask for guidance after you have tried the theory and failed: that way someone can tell you what steps you missed or skipped, so you can fix your technique.

maybe what you wanted to learn was character design, and that is different to drawing. character design is closer to literature than drawing: the way a character looks must follow purpose and background story (why he/she/it looks tall, short, thin, fat, etc, why hsi likes wearing, eating, doing x, why hates z, etc)
