What is /ALT/?
If you're looking for a place to post your cartooning then you've found the right general. This is /ic/s 1st and only merged hub where both Eastern and Western stylization can coexist peacefully, hence the double title. However, by community demand and long history, this is favorably an Anime general.
>Rules & Guidelines
(1) Any form of cartooning is welcome; so submit and receive feedback from others. (2) Please resize your images before posting. (3) Share your knowledge and (4) Remember to not be afraid of asking for critique. Most importantly I encourage you to keep discussion at a civil level, but you're more than welcome to share your opinions.
>I came for anime. Why does the image OP say cartoons general?
To distinguish from the anime study thread (janitor supported). Please post your studies there and personal work goes here.

>>4855397
The mother is staring directly at the viewer while maintaining a neutral expression despite her son playing and interacting with her. The son on the other hand is seemingly very excited to blankly stare into space. It'd be more natural if they were looking at each other. The neck/shoulder area on the mother also needs some reworking. I'd just keep these points in mind while moving onto the next piece, though.

The son should still be looking the mother (like in the painting.) If you want the mother to stare at the viewer, pay attention to the posture of the neck and the slight tilt of the head in the painting. The painting's mother is done in a way where the neck and tilt of the head implies she looked up from her son to the viewer, while your's is stiffer and carries tension (and is also likely why the other anon commented it felt unsettling.)

What kind of answer would you like? I don't really understand the question. How can you? You can look closer and observe better. While doing those things you can compare the relative distance between features. You can also spend longer on your image. Attempt it multiple times. Find a better resolution image.

I would say the nose and "muzzle" protrudes a bit too much, she's beginning to develop a snout. Also, I really struggle to tell what's going on below the neck here, is she crossing her arms? Either way it doesn't look like you really considered 3D form or anatomy on it. If it is crossed arms, then it looks like her arms spring directly from the collarbone, and the form of her breast doesn't make sense at all.

It's cool though anon, I really dig the gameboy style and except for the minor muzzle problem, I think the face looks pretty good. Ear might also be a bit large though.

Overall I think they're pretty strong, and you seem to have a good grasp on these kinds of effects.
There are a couple of things about the explosion I want to point out though.
An explosion like this goes through different stages in sequence. First there's the flash of light, then the fireball, then the rapidly rising smoke cloud, then the blast wave. In your image the fireball, smoke cloud, and blast wave appear to be occuring simultaneously. Now, given that these are still images and not frames of an animation, it's okay to fudge it a bit, but just be aware of how it would look in reality so you can make more informed decisions when fudging.
But aside from that, I think the skittering rocks at the bottom interfere with the initial energy of the blast from a graphic standpoint. The overall gesture of the explosion should be a kind of starburst pattern, so the secondary motion on the bouncing breaks that up.
Also, there are a couple of spots where the planes seem to intersect one another, which hurts the 3-dimensionality of it, so be careful of that.

This is pretty nice as well, a lot more pleasant to look at than your digital stuff. Your coloring tends to look very muddy and washed out and that drags down the quality of your artwork. Doing some traditional painting sounds like a great idea - that often helps people who have issues with color and value. Try doing some studies or color mixing exercises in acrylic as well, you'd really benefit from that.

You could also try doing some pieces with linework only. Obviously avoiding color isn't a good long term solution and you should learn to paint properly too, but seeing this makes me think your style could look quite elegant in black and white, assuming good linework.

You should work on you head construction and faces in general. I’d also suggest making the eye highlights easier to see. The shirt wrinkles are rendered well but they don’t fit the direction of the fabric, it looks like the shirt is rolled up at the bottom or something. The pose is kind of awkward but it’s not horrible or anything, I can see what you were going for.

>> No.4859265

>>4858296
It will. But the problem is you are lacking a lot of details that would add volume. See your windows, you need a little diagonal shadows on the sides to suggest depth - they look painted on. The shadow on the tree from the pillar is straight which will never happen if the tree has volume - the shadow will go in a wavy zigzag and also will be scratchy due to leaves breaking it on the border. Monster lacks shadows between plates and if those black things are supposed to be holes they don't look like it. And a lot of other stuff like this.

Looks like a coloring book. If you’re not going to render over the linework or if you don’t have a very specific coloring technique in mind recommend varying line weight more within the strokes themselves and seeing where you can simplify. Think about each stroke as mileage and the viewer’s eyes as a runner, they need rest areas. Again good coloring can aid this but as it is, it’s tiring to look at.

This isn't finished. I usually draw in a "hard shadowed" style for when it's just linework or to be cel-shaded.

Not that guy but her left fingertips are fat and the palm area the form doesn’t match actual anatomy. Her right hand the emphasis on her tendons and knuckles make it look manly. Her feet don’t know what kind of shoe that’s supposed to be but there’s no sole. Maybe that’s the intent but the bigger problem is there doesn’t seem to be any consideration to the form of the foot inside. Her face, I’m not sure if she’s supposed to be kind of puggish or ugly but she is. Not sure what your intent with the face is really so can’t give you advice there. If she’s supposed to be looking out the window or at the birds she’s looking more to the right of the birds maybe at the window frame.

Thanks. That's actually very helpful, anon. I appreciate the explanation. I'll work on trying to fix those right now.
As far as her face is concerned, she is supposed to be doing a bit of a pout, looking more off into the distance than directly at the birds or outside the window. In my case, I usually stare at nothing than stare outside, so that is the intent, it it helps.

mouth needs to be larger, the corners of his mouth should juuust about align with the inner sides of the iris, not quite at the pupil. you should also slightly lower his mouth and make his chin more square. once you adjust the corners of the mouth you can bring that point down to form the square shape of his chin. it also looks like his nostrils should be wider and the round tip of his nose slightly more pronounced. your portrait is looking good so far, he looks slightly too feminine and i think those subtle changes would capture his likeness and make him look more masculine. are you used to drawing women more?

What did you even change? Just the costume? The costume isn't the issue, the figure is.
Sexy female figures require flowing curves, what you've drawn is more like lumpy lines.
The legs in particular are malformed and unappealing, and the breast looks like a rock.
Are you sexually attracted to girls in the first place? Because it's going to be tough for you to make sexy girls if not.

Not sure I have an approach to vfx yet. Still trying to figure things out.
I think the feet should be larger and better defined in form (they woble a bit, feel out of shape). The thing were she is resting on you could push the cushions shapes, mold them around her more, feels a tad rigid. I like the storytelling behind tho, so she's bored because she has to stay inside or so? There's someone training outside.

>>4857110
Thanks, I do have to check explosions dynamics but yeah, it's hurting me not knowing what shape/stage/forces to put inside a single illustration.

Another vfx batch, left better than right side so far. Still troubles with shapes but have been checking stuff out although I do not get anything so far.

the face needs fixing. I know it might be your "style" but the nose, mouth and eyes and the freckles is just a huge turn off. Like come on.. the speckles on her face look like fucking moon craters. You messed up on the most important part of the composition which the characters face.

Are you the anon I was speaking to when I posted the lineart? I ask because you mentioned the face. I did attempt to incorporate a number of your critiques and tweaks, though it seems that I haven't gotten them just right.
If it is you, I do have to say that I prefer how it looks after your feedback, so thank you in that regard.
On the subject of the face speckles/freckles, I was going for a bit of an Archie Andrews stylization, pic related. It's a shorthand that I've picked up. Are you suggesting I do away with them entirely, or is there a way that I could maintain the aesthetic while getting something more visually pleasing?

Looks pretty solid to me, man.

Top row's characters I wanna use for a comic. Bottom row is me drawin notable people to figure out the visual style I want for the comic. I got the most naggin feelin that I could do more and take these further, but I'm not quite sure how. Like the way I drew em seem too timid.

I think you have a good handle of caricature in this style. The famous faces look recognizable.
Push further for experimentation, but I think you’d risk veering into complete caricature.

Thanks for these replies, guys. I really appreciate it. As you can both tell I really only draw girls haha, I'm trying to break out of that and learn to draw masculine features too. This was my first real attempt at drawing a male. I'm going to give it another shot over the weekend and start from scratch with your advice.

Go to /beg/, read the sticky.
The only decent part of this is the perspective, which leads me to believe you used a 3D model for reference.

The arm feels too stubby for your foreshortening. The forearm and hand would look better if they were brought closer to the “camera.”
I recommend mimicking the pose. The hand would naturally fall to around the hip area, rather than the top of the waist.

Because studies are the only thing worth showing at this stage in your development. It's okay to keep doing art for fun, but when every aspect of it is wrong there is nothing to really comment on. Additionally, this most definitely does not belong on /alt/; you don't have a 'style' yet, you just don't know how to draw things.
