I appreciate what he did, but from what I know of him, he was not a very good painter. His paintings were basically paint-by-numbers pieces designed to be easily replicated by the unwashed masses so they could be happy about creating something, and a lot of them have a pretty cheap airbrush-van-art feel, like someone who never paid much attention to what nature actually looks like tried to paint a landscape with meme techniques while using 80s fantasy art as a color palette. The man was more of a therapist and motivator than a painter.
I could be wrong, I didn’t really look into him, but I never saw anything of his that wasn’t in his tv comfort zone. Not even pushing his limits at landscapes.

art doesn't need to be a technical masturbation.

Art literally means skill, craft. This retarded notion that art is about expressing yourself with low effort shit like installations or intentionally shitty doodles is just that, retarded. Michelangelo dreaded the sistine chapel because he didn’t think himself a painter, that is how much he respected the art.
Ross never applied himself, he is an artist about as much as Joe Rogan is a fighter, they both used a profession they dabbled in as flavour to their actual professions, that being tv/podcast host.
I’m not putting Ross down, he brought many more people much more happiness than Da Vinci or any master, but his paintings are irrelevant and do not stand out among hundreds of thousands of such works made in weekly workshops for hobbyists, and that goes for their every aspect, not merely technical execution.

the notion that art is a sport has been debunked at least a century ago.

You're still stuck in XIX century views on art.

Not saying you don't have a point, but It's a bit old to argue that art is a sport in 2020.

You need to read a book on the last 200 years of art development.

I never made any comparison to sport.
Sport is competetive. There is no competition in art. Art is about honing a craft, that being painting, sculpting, etc. Contrary to your initial statement, Bob Ross’ approach to art is masturbatory, void of commitment or respect towards the craft itself, it serves only as a tool towards self gratification, and could be replaced by any such activity.
Again, I am not even focusing on his skill, his art is completely void of meaning or intent, it is a therapeutic technique and nothing more.
If you are incapable of arguing your own point without putting up straw men or directing me to read some unspecified third party argument, we have nothing further to discuss.

Art hasn't been a craft since WWII bro.

read a book on art history.
the people that used those arguments lost WWII.

that's why you should read a book.

You only see two variations of art in the entire human existence: easy formulaic Bob Ross trash or "technical masturbation"?

Yep, yep. Just don't start making art, no one wants to see what it would be like.

some are ignoring that he did a painting in front of a camera in 20ish minutes, 20 something times over per season. does private work exist? not sure he can be judged without seeing that.

anon isn't being judgemental towards Bob Ross at all. He wasn't a great master of the arts, he was a kind man who introduced normal people to some basic painting techniques and helped them to make simple, nice looking paintings that made them feel good. That's a good thing, but you wouldn't go to his videos for serious, in-depth painting instruction.
