depend where you live and how far are you willing to travel for work because generally almost all graduate end up jobless when they're out of school. Even while in STEM, fighting for an intern position is hard. You have to know that getting a job is not an instant gratification, it's a years of progress for most field, and it would be faster if you're active.
For instant, if you want to be an IT clerk you still need experience and nowaday they require you addition personal study and adapting to new business etiquette. There is no short path.

The more I look at them the more I like them. A lot of creative ambitious ideas. To be perfectly honest I prefer your earlier stuff. I find it much easier to read. I have to actively concentrate on the newer stuff to understand what's going on because the color and lighting is pretty bizarre and the focal points aren't clear in my opinion. All your new stuff looks like monsters in hell. The background are so dark and clash with the characters. All of your stuff has an impressionist quality of blurriness that comes off as incompleteness rather than stylistic to me. Others may disagree. That's fine. Looking at your older stuff, that evangellion painting is such a relief for my brain. it's so clean and focused and bright. even the corgi, while it's simple, it's easy on the eyes, the perspective is good.

I can't honestly say that you have made progress in a positive direction over these 3 years. Perhaps in concepts but not in appeal.

i feel like im not making progress fast enough, being at this level is sort of embarrassing for my age. i draw like a teenager but i havent been a teenager for a very long time.

i work 2 jobs. i really cant spend more time on art than i already do if i want to continue having a roof over my head. i just have to use my time more efficiently, so maybe i should actually pay for a real course or teacher.

I legit don't remember the specifics, but I think it had to do with 1) the fact that I was still practicing my fundamentals on my sketchbook, and 2) one philosophy I had back then, not by choice but by necessity: I went hardcore on quality over quantity because I didn't have as much time to draw as I used to, so I used every new painting as an opportunity to learn. I didn't post much of what I actually made back then and I should try to find it in my old computer, but basically I remember one particular commission that was waaaay too complex for my level at the moment, and I spent fucking months on that one painting, on and off, I literally spent most of the year here painting a single commission. I can't believe the client was that incredibly patient.
The commission was two Warhammer characters painted realistically and I faced obstacles at every point of the artwork, which pushed me to learn new stuff on the go. Everything from perspective, composition, color, texture, how to realistically paint faces, and so on. Not a pleasant experience, but definitely helpful, I advice everyone to take on big challenges that push them to their limits instead of staying in their comfort zones.

TL;DR bit more than I could chew and had to force myself to learn new shit at every step of the way if I wanted to deliver what some aussie paid me for. Also, asking for critiques and really remembering what I learned from them each time was very important at that time, in fact I asked for crit on /ic/ for that comm.

The last is definitely the best in terms of form - it's not as rendered but no amount of rendering or lighting will make up for bad construction

You've definitely progressed from comically bad to just regular bad, keep it up

I recommend doing loomis heads on pen & paper until you get a better grasp of construction before you worry about painting anything - the goal is not just to be able to draw a plausible head but to reproduce it consistently, from multiple angles

Certainly an improvement of you contrast from when you started to last year but it's a little too gradual for comfort. Try some figure drawing and anatomy studies or even just form in general. Or it might just be your to in your style comfort zone. Branch out a little bit to different styles. I love cursors stuff though so do keep going.

Really only started doing studies around mid 2019 and even then, they're few and far between..
You're right about me needing to do more of those definitely. I've been doing basically everything with little actual knowledge, but I'm gonna start studying muscles this year. Been trying to do more cartoony ish proportions recently, so I'll keep on trying to develop that along with regular anime. Cursors?
Thanks for the input. I really have gotten a bit stagnant with how I barely do standalone art nowadays. I hope you have the best growth on your art too, even if you're already far along. Best wishes to you, anon.

I had an old Intuit’s, and digital was really annoying with a screenless tablet. I already spent 10hrs a day in front of a computer, so more computer time for drawing felt horrible. The iPad was much more conducive to my drawing habits. I like to draw on the couch and watch movies, and digital is good for learning color and values. Well it's a lot of things, not just the rendering. Art hard. I don't feel too bad about it because I am still learning something new every day.
Thank you though. I guess I'm okay at rendering, but not very good at painting. Painting's always been hard for me compared to drawing. I like artists who can express a lot with a little, and I like imperfect shapes. Overly polished work loses the forcefulness. Jon Taira, the way he painted the legs in the top right example is so simple it's almost just abstract shapes. My attempt at his style at the bottom right feels overwrought. I think I just need to seriously practice painting, never really paid it its due.

I don't have the pic saved, but in a past thread a kind anon posted a drawing explaining contrast of edges. For arms, you want one side being straight and the other side being curved. 2 curves or 2 straight lines is less appealing. You're already somewhat applying that to the later half of your arms, just do that with the top half as well. The elbows are an important part of the silhouette and expression, don't ignore them

Books I've used the most:
Goldfinger - Human Anatomy for Artists - my stalwart; super dry but it just gets the job done for anatomy
Zarins - Anatomy for Sculptors - no better book I know of for explaining difficult anatomical problems through simple pictures (for example, the deltoid action in various arm positions)
Delavier - Strength Training Anatomy - good drawings of the muscles in action in various poses and angles

Useful books:
Gurney - Color & Light - color theory
Gurney - Imaginative Realism - composition and image planning, a look into how 20th century illustrators like Norman Rockwell composed images

You can learn from anywhere though. Nobody ever talks about Da Vinci's drawings, they're still really good to learn from in 2020. I think these books have covered 50% of my learning, the rest has come from here and there, from numerous studies using reference photos from the internet.
It's hard to pin down a single method of study because a single approach because I use numerous. Best thing to do is experiment and figure out what works for you.

There's two definite things I can say though.
First, have an idea why you're studying. A drawing you want to apply your studies to in the near future.
Second, I think it's important not to copy the drawings in books too literally or on autopilot. I do lots of cross referencing and try to come up with my own ways of constructing, based on the book drawings and diagrams. I want to see how a) artists do the shape b) how the shape looks in life c) what the three dimensional form of the shape is and, ultimately, d) I want to see through the shape.
It's very taxing work, and you have to build up to being able to do it in the first place, which can take months of years. Often I only get a single study done per day done but I swear after doing it it's like having x-ray vision for that part of the body.

you were already good after just one year. wtf.

i think i am doing this wrong. i draw every single day. sometimes just for the sake of drawing something. i have not missed a day in months.

but it must just be that i am not learning enough from my drawings. im trying not to just draw for fun. im try to push myself, and do studies and learn things, but i must be doing something wrong. ive been at this shit for years.

>> No.4844732

>>4844473
When I draw I always have a weird goal in mind something I REALLY want, and I usually beat it to death trying to get there, then I do a few more to make sure that I have burned out

I can give you a few examples
>drawing ryukos: I just really liked KLK when it came out and wanted to draw the cool action scenes. So I would take screen shots of the anime and draw hundreds of frames, and I would keep trying the same frame till my dunning Krueger said it looked good
>turtle fish paint faces: i was having trouble drawing faces, and i’d never read a doujin, but I scraped through all the cum and penises to copy all the faces I could find because I thought they were funny. I kept going until they became uncanny
>animal crossing: I liked making the outfits In game, but always struggle to dress my drawings. I told myself I would draw 30 ac outfits. Around outfit 20 I was done, but I forced myself to finish all 30
>lots of bulmas: I wanted to practice backgrounds / scenes and I probably could have just done 3 and stopped but I did 8 because it would tile better than 7 on Twitter

Just like this post, I could have stopped at 1 example, but I overdid it and dragged you through 4.

I guess I try to keep drawings goal oriented and hope that along the way I end up learning something. So the progression of drawings is fun and rewarding, and not an individual drawing or study, and you remember from the struggling through a dramatic set not just that one lucky face that you nailed.

It’s like “oh I redrew this mecha sailor moon 4 times until I thought it looked cool” Now I remember that one time I was into drawing sailor moon as opposed to an unmemorable one off drawing and maybe remembering that phase / project will help me remember that sailor moon is well designed since her limbs and clothes are contrasting colors so they are always readable when they overlap.

Long ramble: just draw

I'm really into Power Rangers and I've been trying to draw the white ranger from Dino Thunder but I'm not very good at anatomy so I'm trying to "study" in the midst of it but all it's doing is frustrating me and so I try for maybe 20 minutes and then put it down for pretty much the entire day. it's a terribly cycle and I want to stop but I get so defeated so easily. >>4825818
Been following you for like 7 years. I love your academic work like everyone else, but I can see what people are saying about your 'industry safe' work. Naturally you should still take pride in what you are making BECAUSE you are still making. Everyone has an opinion on what has soul, until it's time to get a job. I don't care much for your subjects or your comic, but I admire your drive. You are good, and no 14yo armchair expert on some Mongolian basket weaving forum is going to say anything to the contrary and be correct, so stop acting like you're not killing it.

------------------------------

In mine there's probably five or so full sketchbooks / three or so full size drawing pads / fortyish paintings of varying quality between all this. I can say with certainty that the most effective thing I've done is life drawing with a focus on values. I only started landscape painting three years ago, but I've seen some gains and better money in that. Plein-air painting is GOAT. Everyone should do it at least once.

Made you this image.
This cost me around 10 bucks to make from strapping. You'd at least need a drill and a hand saw.

Plein-air is pretty much just painting without training wheels. I enjoy it because it forces you to be far more aware of the transitory qualities of color and light. You have to race time and light to get the image you need. As for color, it helps to just have more pigments, but I would consider it secondary to light. You're going to do a shit job the first few times, that's just how it works. The important thing is forcing yourself to come up with a time effective way to block your light into the image while keeping the subject readable. You can start as small as you would like to keep your project manageable.

I use canvas panels because they're rigid and they come in standard sizes.

My pallette is Titanium white, mars black, paynes grey, ultramarine blue, cerulean blue, cad red, cad yellow, Burnt umber, burnt sienna, hookers green, primarily. I have a shit ton of colors because I use acrylic. Mixing colors is a learned skill, so it's not something you should expect to be comfortable with right away.

Its true. Art is a lot like Fitness. Most of your gains are years 1-4 and then you fall into Intermediate purgatory as you continue to polish your skills. Without a professional coach at critical moments, its likely that you'll spin your wheels for a while.
Thats why I hopped on coursework after coming back from a huge hiatus- I knew I couldnt ferry the ford on my own without regimented training in areas that I lacked.
I mean, you CAN get better. But the road toward Mastery is lifelong for most people, and its harder to see growth without looking at the long-term.
Also, keep in mind that many people posting here are unironically beginners with only 1-5 years under their belt.
