Of course like most things it's not all or nothing.
For example Monet broke away from tradition on certain points while following it on others. Picasso rejected tradition further, but he still used traditional techniques. Pollock used a new technique but traditional supports. And so on.
If you're not sure whether it's traditional enough, pick another painting.

Oh cool! You know, I never played WoW, but I can see it. Roger Dean made those back in the 70's, I think. So they probably took some inspiration from it. I know James Cameron definitely used some of his paintings as inspirations for Avatar.

"Narrative is told through position of figures. Two characters are facing away divided by sidewalk line with a third between them, looking down from above."

Try to vary your strokes more. Loosen up and try to break out of your hard straight lines. Confidence and curves. It's exactly what my professor told me at your stage. keep doing the studies and remember to focus on values as well as proportions. You will improve quickly if you keep filling sketchbook pages like this. Also the ones with negative space filled out are better and you know why.

This painting came to Texas once, and I had to stop and stare at it for 20 minutes. The academic painters were so skillful at eliminating their brushstrokes that the surface looks completely smooth. It has the most curious effect in person. Like it was burned on by some ghostly hand, rather than made by a human being.
And the ambient shadows in the room, rather than the light, give the figure of Venus real 3D depth. It feels like shes actually looming in front of you.
Its really impressive.
